Chapter One analyses the relationships between economic downturns and marketing strategies, to provide a snapshot of all the marketing actions developed in a context of economic crisis, trying to give response to one relevant question: Is the economic crisis changing marketing strategies? Chapter Two evaluates the effect the 2008 crisis had on the Hungarian industry and on industrial enterprises and to show the strategies and crisis management methods that the industrial enterprises applied during the time of crisis. Chapter Three develops a new model of indicators, aimed to complete gross domestic product (GDP) as the main indicator of economic growth to achieve a better quality of life. Chapter Four discusses economic stress and fear of the financial crisis. Chapter Five reviews empirical research which investigates the impact of economic crises and recessions on suicide. Chapter Six examines the effects of the economic crisis on mental health in Spain. Chapter Seven examines the effects of the Austrian Health Fund Law in 2009 and explores the effects of the economic crisis of 2008 in vulnerable countries of Europe, such as Hungary, France, Italy, Spain and Portugal, in relation with countries sharing similar economic characteristics, but they have not experienced the effects of the economic crisis. Chapter Eight describes the relationships between economic and political crises which occurred repeatedly in Madagascar, and several socio-demographic and health parameters over the 1960-2010 period.

The successful development of children and young people requires that we protect and nurture a set of interrelated physiological, cognitive, and socio-emotional systems. What happens to these systems in early life can have long-term consequences and can even carry over to the next generation. The impact of economic crises on human development is similarly complex and heterogeneous. Some families and some young people display astonishing resilience – either by being comparatively unscathed by crises or by their ability to recover quickly and healthily. Other families and individuals may be unable to prevent exposure, unable to protect themselves, or may not have the same capacity to adapt positively when exposed to a crisis, with potentially serious long-term consequences for healthy development. Human development lies at the intersections of neurology and sociology, genetics and psychology, biology and economics; and this volume approaches the study of shocks and human development from a variety of disciplinary perspectives: economics, sociology, anthropology, and social and developmental psychology. This volume describes the impact of aggregate shocks on human development, and the subtle and intricate settings and pathways through which individuals can be affected. Depending on the timing, duration, transmission mechanisms, and context, the consequences for children's physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development may be costly and irreversible. Fortunately, although children suffer in adversity, they can also benefit positively when exposed to enriching environments. We need to develop and implement effective interventions to prevent the worst consequences of exposure to shocks, and to assist families and young people to recover. This volume explores what we know about protecting young people from lasting harm and promoting healthy development through a crisis. The healthcare becomes more and more subject to higher technologies with a growing number of private, well organized and benefit-oriented hospitals. Researchers found that approximately 50% of health improvements were due to access to better technology, whereas remaining gains resulted from income improvements and better education. Healthcare is actually referenced to as one of the most complex, costly and challenged sector of our contemporary societies. Just as health conditions at any time improve with income level, so too, might adverse income shocks have detrimental effects on health. Economic downturns have been linked to increased morbidity and mortality, and to poor nutrition and mental health. The recent economic crisis through the increasing socioeconomic disparities and difficulties such as unemployment, extreme poverty, homelessness, stigma, discrimination and social isolation and through the budgetary constraints and poor policies for financing prevention and treatment, have been translated to heightened risk behaviors on the individual level and impaired public health response on the population level. The negative impacts can also be observed at the societal level, as all sensitive social indicators have been distorted. In European countries, the late 2000's economic crisis laid to a consistent tendency of European governments to diminish the spending on healthcare. This have led to considerable decrease in the number of people accessing healthcare as in countries with weak health insurance policy people had to use money from their pocket. The economic crisis provokes certainly the need for multifactorial adjustments at all health managerial levels. To powerfully address this issue health managers should have clear understanding of the impacts of economic crisis on their ability to maintain and promote an adequate healthcare provision. The present paper will discuss indeed, the main challenges that a health services manager can face regarding the impact of an economic crisis to a local society.

Estimates indicate that as many as 1 in 4 Americans will experience a mental health problem or will misuse alcohol or drugs in their lifetimes. These disorders are among the most highly stigmatized health conditions in the United States, and they remain barriers to full participation in society in areas as basic as education, housing, and employment. Improving the lives of people with mental health and substance abuse disorders has been a priority in the United States for more than 50 years. The Community Mental Health Act of 1963 is considered a major turning point in America's efforts to improve behavioral healthcare. It ushered in an era of optimism and hope and laid the groundwork for the consumer movement and new models of recovery. The consumer movement gave voice to people with mental and substance use disorders and brought their perspectives and experience into national discussions about mental health. However over the same 50-year period, positive change in American public attitudes and beliefs about mental and substance use disorders has lagged behind these advances. Stigma is a complex social phenomenon based on a relationship between an attribute and a stereotype that assigns undesirable labels, qualities, and behaviors to a person with that attribute. Labeled individuals are then socially devalued, which leads to inequality and discrimination. This report contributes to national efforts to understand and change attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that can lead to stigma and discrimination. Changing stigma in a lasting way will require coordinated efforts, which are based on the best possible evidence, supported at the national level with multiyear funding, and planned and implemented by an effective coalition of representative stakeholders. Ending Discrimination Against People with Mental and Substance Use Disorders: The Evidence for Stigma Change explores stigma and discrimination faced by individuals with mental or substance use disorders and recommends effective strategies for reducing stigma and encouraging people to seek treatment and other supportive services.
