Educating by Story-Telling by Katherine Dunlap Cather Pdf

Excerpt from Educating by Story-Telling: Showing the Value of Story-Telling as an Educational, Tool for the Use of All Workers With Children This book has grown out of years of experience with children of all ages and all classes, and with parents, teachers, librarians, and Sunday School, social center, and settlement workers. The material comprising it was first used in something like its present form in the University of California Summer Session, 1914, and since then has been the basis of courses given in that institution, as well as in private classes and lecture work. The author does not claim that it is the final word upon the subject of story-telling, or that it will render obsolete any one of the several excellent works already upon the market. But the response of children to the stories given and suggested, and the eagerness with which the principles herein advocated have been received by parents and teachers, have convinced her that the book contains certain features that are unique and valuable to those engaged in directing child thought. Other works have shown in a general way how vast a Held is the realm of the narrator, but they have not worked out a detailed plan that the busy mother or teacher can follow in her effort to establish standards, to lead her small charges to an appreciation of the beautiful in literature and art, and to endow' them with knowledge that shall result, in creating a higher code of thought and action. No claim is made that all the problems of the school and home are solved in the ensuing pages, and the title, "Educating by Story-Telling," makes no assumption that storytelling can accomplish everything. Indigenous Innovations in Higher Education by Elizabeth Sumida Huaman,Bryan McKinley Jones Brayboy Pdf

This edited volume is the result of a collaborative project of Indigenous graduate education training and higher education-tribal institution partnerships in the southwestern United States. We feature the work of interdisciplinary scholars writing about local peoples, issues, and knowledges that demonstrate rich linkages between universities and Indigenous communities. Collectively, as Indigenous peoples writing, this work takes the opportunity to explore why and how Indigenous peoples are working to reframe dominant limits of our power and to shift educational efforts from the colonial back to an Indigenous center. These efforts reflect a conscientious practice to maintain Indigenous worldviews through diverse yet unified approaches aimed at serving Indigenous peoples and places. “The luminous Indigenous scholarship contained here comes to us as a rare gift. The voices of Pueblo intellectuals speak to the profoundly innovative Indigenous doctoral cohort model they co-developed with Liz Sumida Huaman and Bryan Brayboy of Arizona State University. They also instruct us in the richness of their contemporary, community-based research, rooted in the ‘creative genius of our ancestors,’ as Karuk scholar Julian Lang evocatively described Indigenous epistemologies.” – K. Tsianina Lomawaima, Professor & Distinguished Scholar of Indigenous Education, School of Social Transformation, Arizona State University “The editors and writers reveal identity and sense of place as indigenous people from their own native perspectives rooted in both their spirit and in their place in the academy. As indigenous people, we strive for the academy to belong to us without the definitions and framework of colonization. This book contributes to our ownership of the academy as a place where we belong with all the knowledge of our ancestors and the promises of the future embedded in what we learn and what we teach.” – Cheryl Crazy Bull, President & CEO, American Indian College Fund “The depth and breadth of knowledge of the editors in Indigenous education and their ability to apply the knowledge to produce practical outcomes and benefits to our Indigenous communities on the ground comes through in this book. It transforms ideas into action and demonstrates the ‘blisters on the authors’ hands’ based experiences that delineate Indigenous Leaders from Indigenous Academics in my view. Indigenous Leaders enact their research into real outcomes for the people on the ground and don’t just write about the issues challenging our peoples.” – Bentham Atirau Ohia, President AMO-Advancement of Maori Opportunity & and AIO-Americans for Indian Opportunity Board member

Narrative Matters by Dr Grant Bage,Grant Bage Pdf

In recent years there has been a massive revival of interest internationally in what story can offer to education. This book covers a range of issues at the heart of teaching history, such as the use of talk, the pitfalls of narrative as a pedagogical tool, translating curriculum content into lessons, story telling and story making. It also questions what it means to teach, the difficulties for teachers of remaining constructively critical of policy, and their own practice, during periods of national legislation and change.

Critical Storytelling in Uncritical Times by Nicholas D. Hartlep,Brandon O. Hensley Pdf

"Critical Storytelling in Uncritical Times shares the stories of students and a professor in a Cultural Foundations of Education Course. Storytellers in this volume grapple with issues of white privilege, racial microaggressions, bullying , cultural barriers, immigration, and other forms of struggle in educational settings. The disciplinary backgrounds of the authors are diverse: Psychology, Communication Studies, Higher Education Administration, and Educational Foundations. The authors write stories about their role(s) in resisting (or failing to resist) hegemony, and their contributions draw attention to critical problems scholars and practitioners find in 21st century schooling. This anthology was planned, written, and edited by course participants. The stories shared in each chapter were completely at the discretion of the author. By making themselves vulnerable, participants investigated stories that mattered to them. This book engages a community of critical voices in an uncritical age."

Story Proof by Kendall Haven Pdf

Like Stephen Krashen's important work in The Power of Reading, Story Proof collects and analyzes the research that validates the importance of story, story reading, and storytelling to the brain development and education of children and adults. Accomplished researcher and storyteller Kendall Haven, establishes the need for understanding the research findings in neural psychology and brain development and the value of a common definition of story if one is to fully grasp the importance and necessity of story to the development of the human mind. To support his case, he reviews a wealth of research from storytellers, teachers, and others who have experienced the power of story firsthand. The author has collected anecdotal experiences from over 100 performing storytellers and from 1,800 story practitioners (mostly teachers) who have made extensive use of stories. He has read more than 150 qualitative and quantitative research studies that discuss the effectiveness of stories and/or storytelling for one or more specific applications (education, organizational management, knowledge management, medical and narrative therapy, etc.). Forty of these studies were literature reviews and comparative studies including analysis of over 1,000 studies and descriptive articles. He has also gathered research evidence from his own story performances for total audiences of over 4 million and from conducting story writing workshops with 200,000 students and 40,000 teachers.
