Educating Clergy by Charles R. Foster Pdf

Based on extensive literary and field research involving surveys, classroom observations, and interviews with faculty, students, and administrators in Roman Catholic, mainline and evangelical Protestant, and Reform and Conservative Jewish seminaries, Educating Clergy explores the influence of their historic traditions and academic settings in contemporary classroom and communal pedagogies. The book describes elements in classroom pedagogies shared across these religious traditions that distinctively integrate the cognitive, practical, and normative apprenticeships to be found in all forms of professional education.

Clergy Education in America by Larry Abbott Golemon Pdf

"The first 100 years of the education of the clergy in the United States is rightly understood as classical professional education-that is, a formation into an identity and calling to serve the wider public through specialized knowledge and skills. This book argues that pastors, priests, and rabbis were best formed into capacities of culture building through the construction of narratives, symbols, and practices that served their religious communities and the wider public. This kind of education was closely aligned with liberal arts pedagogies of studying classical texts, languages, and rhetorical practices. The theory of culture here is indebted to Geertz and Bruner's social-semiotic view, which identifies culture as the social construction of narrative, symbols, and practices that shape the identity and meaning-making of certain communities. The theological framework of analysis is indebted to Lindbeck's cultural-linguistic view, which emphasizes the role of doctrine as grammatical rules that govern narratives, doctrinal grammars, and social practices for distinct religious communities. This framework is pushed toward the renewal and reconstruction of religious frameworks by the postmodern work of Sheila Devaney and Kathryn Tanner. The book also employs several other concepts from social theory, borrowed from Jurgen Habermas, Max Weber, Pierre Bourdieu, Michael Young, and Bernard Anderson"--

"An Educated Clergy" by Jack C. Whytock Pdf

Scotland has long been known for its emphasis upon an educated clergy, yet little serious historical attention has been given to how this was actually fostered. This book begins to fill that gap. While a thoroughly historical study in Scottish church history and historical theology, the book also serves as a springboard for reflection and application to the work of theological education today with the evangelical Presbyterian and Reformed community.

Common Worship in Theological Education by Siobhan Garrigan,Todd Eric Johnson Pdf

What is the place of corporate worship in theological education? Certainly it is not unexpected to have ministry students attending seminary chapel, but what are the expectations for the students who attend chapel? Is it to form their liturgical sensibilities into conformity with a particular worship tradition or style? Or is it to provide a safe place to try things that one would be reluctant to experiment with in congregational worship? Although common worship for ministry students is almost a given in all theological schools, there are few common understandings about it goals and purposes. Common Worship in Theological Education is the first book to address the theological, pedagogical, and political issues involved in the planning and execution of seminary chapel. It offers voices from across the theological and ecumenical spectrum about chapel, as well as involving multiple disciplines in the conversation. This volume provides the first comprehensive survey of the worship issues at stake in seminary education today. The essays in this collection provide the foundation for a productive conversation within a seminary faculty or among colleagues within a theological discipline. This volume makes the case that the chapel ought to have a seat at the table when the education mission of a theological school is being discussed. So pull up a chair and prepare for a fascinating conversation.

Church, College, and Clergy by Brian John Fraser Pdf

Church, College, and Clergy commemorates the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of Knox College in Toronto. Founded in 1844, it is the oldest, largest, and most influential Presbyterian theological school in Canada. Brian Fraser traces the history of the college and examines how Presbyterians in Canada educated the leaders who ensured the preservation and propagation of their culture. Using the writings of faculty members, Fraser describes the evolution of theological education at Knox College and, by extension, the ministry and mission of the Presbyterian Church of Canada.

Interventions to Address Victims of Clergy Sexual Misconduct by Dr. Karen D. Reid Ph.D. Pdf

Ironically, after continually engaging in rigorous research on the topic of clergy sexual misconduct and abuse, another hideous sex scandal of an alleged religious cult leader was exposed on social media by gospel recording artist Vicki Yohe. While it is untrue that the president has returned Jesus to the White House, thankfully, God is revealing his truth about the narcissistic men who are master manipulators of evil deeds that destroy lives, specifically women’s. As a matter of fact, I feel that this perverted spirit is invading society from the White House (Trump), to the church house (Taylor), to the world (RKelly). How can I help in the destruction of these works of iniquity? How can I become another voice to sound the alarm in these vile, violent acts of sexual misconduct and abuse? As I prayed and inquired to God, while agonizing over the magnitude of this calamity, my doctoral dissertation became the birthing process of this book. This is a good place to publicly thank the cofounder / vice president / CEO of the Hope of Survivors, Samantha Nelson, for being a very active participant during my research plan. When she immediately agreed to write the foreword for this book, I was confident that the timing was right. A couple of days later, as budgeting was my next concern, my spiritual mother unexpectedly wrote the Twin Ministries a check that was enough to cover half of the cost of funding the publishing expense. I instantly interrupted the flow of working on other forthcoming projects to obey the leading of the Holy Spirit. Hence, I pray that this book will have a profound impact on the body of Christ by bringing pastoral accountability to its leaders, public awareness to the community, and personal amendments to victims and their families. To say the least, the church must not only deal with salvation and deliverance; as a community, we must perpetuate prevention and intervention! No more silence of the lamb! Thus, if you are part of the remnant of believers whom God is raising to be a new example of irreproachable transparency and integrity in business, ministry, and marriage, please share, share, and share!

Clergy Education in America by Larry Abbott Golemon Pdf

Clergy have historically been represented as figures of authority, wielding great influence over our society. During certain periods of American history, members of the clergy were nearly ever-present in public life. But men and women of the clergy are not born that way, they are made. And therefore, the matter of their education is a question of fundamental public importance. In Clergy Education in America, Larry Golemon shows not only how our conception of professionalism in religious life has changed over time, but also how the education of religious leaders have influenced American culture. Tracing the history of clergy education in America from the Early Republic through the first decades of the twentieth century, Golemon tracks how the clergy has become increasingly diversified in terms of race, gender, and class in part because of this engagement with public life. At the same time, he demonstrates that as theological education became increasingly intertwined with academia the clergy's sphere of influence shrank significantly, marking a turn away from public life and a decline in their cultural influence. Clergy Education in America offers a sweeping look at an oft-overlooked but critically important aspect of American public life.
