International Student Education in Tertiary Settings by Zuocheng Zhang,Trevor Grimshaw,Xingsong Shi Pdf

International Student Education in Tertiary Settings addresses key issues in international student education programme design and implementation. It maps contemporary theories and practices in international students’ transcultural learning and engagement and showcases successful tertiary education programmes for international students in Australia, China, Japan, the USA and the UK. The book highlights the opportunities for engaging international students that are built into the various programmes, international students’ strategies for coping with various challenges of engagement with their educational programmes, and a range of factors that confound their engagement in academic and intercultural learning. The broad coverage of international education programmes in a variety of geographical, sociocultural and pedagogical settings enables the discussion about the complexity of contemporary international student education, shared challenges and productive ways of engaging international students in transcultural learning and the prospect of sustainable engagement. The principles and insights into programme design and implementation to engage international students will be useful for researchers and practitioners in international student education, academics tasked with teaching international students in their class, and administrators responsible for managing and providing services to international students.

Out-of-school Youth and the Urban Labour Market by Wim H. M. L. Hoppers Pdf

This paper, aimed at identifying urban demand for youth poses two main questions: what are the work positions that are available for early school leavers and out of school youth and what are their potential prospects for upward job mobility? It examines three types of youth training: non-formal training in skills training centre, informal on- the-job training in factories or workshops and formal industrial training in trades training institutes. The above two questions are with special reference to Lusaka's furniture-making and tailoring activities. The great majority of microproducers in furniture-making had received their initial training in small workshops owned by friends and relatives. Most of the assistants in workshops are youth who are also found as independent artisans. Youth trained in workshops do not have any special advantage in competing for wage employment. Those trained in non-formal training centres enjoy better prospects.

EBOOK: Breaking the Cycle of Educational Alienation: A Multiprofessional Approach by Richard Williams,Colin Pritchard Pdf

Truancy, delinquency and school-exclusion pose major challenges to the drive to promote social inclusion and raise standards for all. Many children who are truants or become excluded from school have inherited a sense of ‘educational alienation’ from their parents, whose own negative perceptions of the education system make it difficult for them to collaborate with the school. In this groundbreaking book, the authors show how the cycle of educational alienation can be broken, to enable parents and schools to work together to contribute to children’s educational, social and emotional well-being. They illustrate this by exploring a highly successful initiative in a school with severe socio-economic disadvantages, which, in conjunction with a school-based social work service, developed an effective family-teacher-community alliance. They demonstrate the substantial improvements that such a multiprofessional approach can bring about in reducing truancy, delinquency and exclusion and helping children to become positive, fulfilled and included members of their schools and communities. Breaking the Cycle of Educational Alienation is key reading for teachers and trainee teachers, child psychologists, educational psychologists and social workers, whose task it is to ensure that ‘Every Child Matters’.

The Education of Immigrant Children by A. J. Cropley Pdf

Originally published in 1983. This book concentrates on the psychological factors within immigrants and on the importance of these for relations with locals and for education. It argues that immigrants experience a state of estrangement from both their own societies and from the receiving society. The educational effects of this manifest themselves partly in poor achievement, partly in poor behaviour and in dropping out of society. These are seen as the results of a diminished self-worth, a feeling of being pre-programmed to failure, and of being outsiders. This study develops a psychological model of the state of affairs and of the desirable educational measures needed for coping with it – in educational planning, curriculum development, teacher training and so on. It presents guidelines or suggestions for areas and kinds of actions, not presentating specific materials or programmes. This book fosters development of insight and understanding among teachers, policy-makers, teacher trainers and immigrants themselves.
