War and Trade in Eighteenth-Century Newfoundland by Olaf Uwe Janzen Pdf
This book offers a selection of papers by Olaf U. Janzen concerning the maritime history of eighteenth-century Newfoundland, reprinted from various publications and assembled here in chronological order. It explores themes of imperial dominance expressed by both the British and French empires in the struggle for sovereignty that ensconced the two nations. The Newfoundland fishery in the wake of the Treaty of Utrecht was also source of tension between British and French fishermen due to the fishery’s lucrative status. In attempt to integrate Newfoundland’s maritime history into the wider context of the North Atlantic world it examines the struggles of France as their maritime trade went into decline; the dominance of the British Royal Navy on the Atlantic Ocean; the struggle of indigenous Canadians to migrate to Newfoundland; and the efforts of America during the War of Independence to target the fishery when vulnerable. It consists of an introduction, twelve chapters exploring pertinent themes, and an appendix containing reprinted oil paintings of British artist Francis Holman depicting a naval engagement of 7-8 July 1777 involving numerous vessels.

Newfoundland in 1842 by Sir Richard Henry Bonnycastle Pdf
Bonnycastle wrote several books which described the provinces in which he served as an officer, and later commander, of the Royal Engineers. This particular work, which is comprised of two volumes, focuses on Newfoundland; Bonnycastle's aim was to demonstrate the importance of Newfoundland as a British colony, and to provide an unbiased view of Newfoundland, as previous literature generally portrayed her as inhospitable and desolate. Volume one contains the general, political, natural, and physical history of Newfoundland, including information on the animals, vegetation, agriculture, and geology of the province, as well as the climatology and meteorology of the island, while volume two contains the moral history of Newfoundland and information on the province's current political economy, modern geography, and topography.

The Rule of the Admirals by Jerry Bannister,Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History Pdf
Jerry Bannister's The Rule of the Admirals examines governance in Newfoundland from the rule of the fishing admirals in 1699 to the establishment of representative government in 1832. It offers the first in-depth account of the rise and fall of the system of naval government that dominated the island for more than a century. In this provocative look at legal culture in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Newfoundland, Bannister explores three topics in detail: naval government in St. John's, surrogate courts in the outports, and patterns in the administration of law. He challenges the conventional view that early Newfoundland was a lawless frontier isolated from the rest of the Atlantic world, and argues that an effective system of naval government emerged to meet the needs of those in power. An original and perceptive work, Bannister's argument demands that we reconsider much of our knowledge of early Newfoundland history. As he re-examines governance prior to an elected assembly and places his analysis firmly within the material conditions of Newfoundland society, Bannister provides a groundbreaking reinterpretation of a critical period in the island's colonial development. Ultimately, The Rule of the Admirals sheds light on one of the most misunderstood chapters in Canadian and British colonial history.

Newfoundland and the Jingoes by John Fretwell Pdf
Excerpt from Newfoundland and the Jingoes: An Appeal to England's Honor IT would be evidence of gross ignorance, or something worse, to pretend that the United States, under like condi tions, would have treated the Newfoundlanders better than England has done. It would be especially so after the humiliating spectacle presented to the world by our Demo cratic majorities last year in Congress and in the State and city of New York. With material resources superior to those of any other country in the world, we are obliged to appeal to the European money-lender for gold. Even the chosen head of our Tory Democracy tells Congress that we must sacrifice to obtain gold on the terms offered by his Secretary of the Treas ury.
