Electoral Reform at Work by Philip Salmon Pdf

This book charts the political transformation of Britain that resulted from the "Great" Reform Act of 1832. It argues that this extensively debated parliamentary reform, aided by the workings of the New Poor Law (1834) and Municipal Corporations Act (1835), moved the nation far closer to a "modern" type of representative system than has previously been supposed. Drawing on hitherto neglected local archives and the records of election solicitors, Dr Salmon demonstrates how the Reform Act's practical details, far from being mere "small print", had a profound impact on borough and county politics. Combining computer-assisted electoral analysis with traditional methods, he traces the emergence of new types of voter partisanship and party organisation after 1832, and exposes key differences between the parties which resulted in a remarkable national recovery by the Conservative party. In passing he provides important new perspectives on issues such as MPs' relations with their constituents, the expense and culture of popular politics after 1832, the electoral impact of railway development, and the role of 'deference voting' in the counties. Dr PHILIP SALMON is Editor of the 1832-1945 House of Commons project at the History of Parliament.

Electoral Reform by Joseph King Pdf

Excerpt from Electoral Reform: An Inquiry Into Our System of Parliamentary Representation I 13331113 to acknowledge my debt to friends who have aided me in compiling the material, and coming to the conclusions, of this book. Especially I must thank Mr. J. C. Haig for helping me in the parts where Colonial experience and examples are cited, Mr. J. H. Humphreys, Secretary of the Proportional Representation Society, for much valuable assistance, and Mr. Frank R. Massey. Some errors of fact may be found. As in our Colonies and elsewhere proposals were being discussed in various legislative assemblies when these pages were being sent to press, some facts may be out of date even before the book is published. I believe that any such failings will neither invalidate the arguments nor impair the con elusions which are here advanced. Excerpt from Electoral Reform in England and Wales: The Development and Operation of the Parliamentary Franchise, 1832-1885 The difficulty of tracing such changes in a single vol ume has not been small, and I wish to express my deep gratitude to those who have given their assistance. The kindly and inspiring advice and supervision Of Professor W. C. Practical Aspects of Electoral Reform by John H. Humphreys Pdf

Excerpt from Practical Aspects of Electoral Reform: A Study of the General Election, 1922 This little book sets out some of the salient facts relating to the General Election of 1922. In addition it examines some of the problems created by modern political conditions. Of these perhaps the most important is the maintenance of government where no party has a clear majority in the representative chamber. This is a problem which, owing to the rise of new parties, has to be faced in practically every democracy of the world, whether it uses a proportional or a majority system of election. Whilst there is a large measure of agreement that some change is necessary in the method of electing the House of Commons, there is some doubt as to what form the change should take. The choice would seem to lie between the alternative vote and proportional representation. Both these systems are examined, and it is hoped that the book may serve as a contribution to the discussion of electoral reform which will almost inevitably take place, both in parliament and in the nation, before the next general election.
