Emperor Chandragupta by Adity Kay Pdf

Becoming an emperor is not easy, especially when there are enemies everywhere and no one you can trust. India, third century BCE. A land ruled by powerful dynasties, each fighting for supremacy over the other, unaware that a conqueror from Greece has arrived at the country’s doorstep in a bid to establish his dominion over the entire known world. In the east, the Magadhan empire is ruled by the Nandas, a clan driven by a limitless hunger for power and given to violence and abuse. From the embers of their lust and avarice a boy is born – a boy named Moriya, raised by a tribe of peacock-tamers and oblivious of the legacy that is rightfully his...until the day he is sought out by Chanakya, a wily political strategist looking for vengeance against the ruthless rulers of Magadha. Under the training and tutelage of his shrewd adviser, the tentative young man, now christened Chandragupta, makes his way across the vast plains of Bharatvarsha to meet the famed invader Alexander and build an army of his own. But being a warrior prince, he finds, comes at a heavy price – of trust and loyalty and perhaps even his life... This is the story of a youth who must battle supreme odds – both within and without – to fulfil his destiny as one of the greatest emperors the world has ever known. This is the story of Chandragupta Maurya.

Chandragupta Maurya by Sushma Jansari Pdf

We take it for granted that some historical figures become heroes, and others do not. Chandragupta Maurya evolved from obscure ruler to contemporary national icon. The key moment in the making of this Indian hero was a meeting by the banks of the River Indus between Chandragupta and Seleucus, founder of the Seleucid empire and one of Alexander the Great’s generals, in c.305-3 BC. This significant event was a moment of peace-making at the end of conflict. But no reliable account exists in early sources, and it is not even clear which ruler was victorious in battle. This uncertainty enabled British and Indian historians of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to interpret the sources in radically different ways. With Chandragupta representing India and Seleucus standing in for Britain, British scholars argued that Seleucus defeated Chandragupta, while Indian academics contended the opposite. The writing and reception of history fundamentally influences how we engage with the past, and the evolving colonial and post-colonial relationship between Britain and India is crucial here. In India, the image of Chandragupta as an idealised hero who vanquished the foreign invader has prevailed and found expression in contemporary popular culture. In plays, films, television series, comic books and historical novels, Chandragupta is the powerful and virtuous Hindu ruler par excellence. The path to this elevated standing is charted in this book.

Alexander and Chandragupta the Great by Ashok Sinha Pdf

This historical play on Chandragupta, who ushered a new Golden Period in the history of India in the modern era (after a sequence of glorious eras including those of Rama in the Treta-Yuga (cosmic era) and Krishna (Dwapar-Yuga), millennia ago, who are now venerated as Avatars (Incarnations of God) by virtue of their exemplary characters and deeds.) It draws from information contained in history books, a play in Hindi by the famed poet and playwright, Jaya Shankar Prasad, the recent television series called Chanakya, and other available sources; and is written in a fashion to facilitate stage-production by youngsters and adults, particularly those of Indian descent in the USA, Europe, and other parts of the world.

Peace reigns in the land of Magadha, under the rule of Emperor Samudragupta. New alliances are made every day, trade and the arts flourish, and Chandra – the young prince – leads his father’s horse across the length of Bharatvarsha as a part of the ashwamedha yagna, cementing the emperor’s influence. The kingdom is at its peak, but Chandra’s thoughts are clouded, his heart heavy. As his elder brother, Ramagupta, prepares to take their ageing father’s place on the throne, Chandra, bound as he is to obey the future king, wrestles constantly with his brother’s decisions – decisions he believes are inimical to the stability of the empire. And so begins a tale of conflict between two brothers: one drunk on power, buoyed by the unmitigated support of the Pataliputra court, the other a seeming outsider in the palace, who yet commands the people’s loyalty and love. And when an enemy unlike any before rises to challenge the Guptas’ might, Chandra must overcome his demons in order to protect his people and become a king in his own right – he must become Vikramaditya.

Kautilya's Arthashastra by Kau?alya,Priyadarshni Academy (Bombay, India) Pdf

Kautilya, also known as Chanakya, is India s most illustrious political economist of all time. He regarded economic activity as the driving force behind the functioning of any political dispensation. In fact, he went to the extent of saying that revenue should take priority over the army because sustaining the army was possible out of a well-managed revenue system.Kautilya advocated limiting the taxation power of the State, having low rates of taxation, maintaining a gradual increase in taxation and most importantly devising a tax structure that ensured compliance. He strongly encouraged foreign trade, basing it on the premise that for a successful trade contract to be established, it had to be beneficial to all. He emphasised State control and investment in land, water and mining. Kautilya was a true statesman who bridged the gap between experience and vision. For Kautilya, good governance was paramount. He suggested built-in checks and balances in systems and procedures for the containment of malpractices. Many postulates of Kautilya s philosophy of political economy are applicable to contemporary times.

Ancient India/Maurya Empire by John Bankston Pdf

The Maurya Empire stretched from Afghanistan to the southern tip of India. The first emperor, Chandragupta Maurya, grew up in a village of peacock farmers. His grandson Ashoka would renounce war and strive for peace. Indians still call him Ashoka the Great and regard him as one of history’s finest rulers. The Maurya Empire was ruled by kings who allowed their ministers to disagree with them. It existed over two thousand years ago, yet it had laws familiar in the 21st century—protecting workers, buyers and sellers. Today its monuments survive while its symbols adorn the flag of India.
