Enchanted Community by Robert Thornton Henderson Pdf

What Henderson has done in 'Enchanted Community' is force us to confront the questions of why the church is, and what it has to do with the good news of God in Jesus Christ. He takes us on a fascinating journey into the mystery of the church, and in the process, challenges our understanding of what it means to be the authentic body of Christ. For Henderson, the church should not be identified with its institutional forms, but rather in the authentic communities inhabited by the Holy Spirit that are part of God's missional movement. We, as believers, are in a very real sense Òcalled out to be part of this New Creation community to lead transformed lives as a witness to God's revelation. The journey leads us back to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as the only (and ultimate) source of enchantment in a disenchanted world. As Henderson makes clear, this journey is anything but non-controversial, harmless, and Òspiritual, but is in fact radical and subversive in its very essence. This book offers to all of us--from the pragmatic, the idealistic, and the honest, to the slightly cynical and almost-jaded--practical steps to maintaining the integrity of our discipleship and the authenticity of our relationships as we struggle to live out our calling to be an enchanted people, bearers of God's authentic New Creation humanity in the church and in our daily ministry as salt and light where we live and work.

Relentless Love by Edwin Carl Smith Pdf

Ed Smith defines enchantment as 'that place where our life and our deepest dreams merge' and he maintains that it is our true nature. In 'Relentless Love', he proposes that we can live lives of enchantment through the practice of relentless love. He inspires us to create a world based on our intention to love and our faith in life and contends that evolution is propelling us to do so. He defines evolution as 'events you do not like that converge to create a possibility you could not anticipate'. This is an original, lucid, voice with something very compelling and vital to say that can change all of our lives.

Enchanted Calvinism by Adam Mohr Pdf

Enchanted Calvinism's surprising central proposition is that Ghanaian Presbyterian communities have become more enchanted -- i.e., attuned to spiritual explanations of and remedies for suffering -- as they have become moreintegrated into capitalist modes of production. Enchanted Calvinism's central proposition is that Ghanaian Presbyterian communities, both past and present, have become more enchanted -- more attuned to spiritual explanations of and remedies for suffering -- as they havebecome integrated into capitalist modes of production. The author draws on a Weberian concept of religious enchantment to analyze the phenomena of spiritual affliction and spiritual healing within the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, particularly under the conditions of labor migration: first, in the early twentieth century during the cocoa boom in Ghana and, second, at the turn of the twenty-first century in their migration from Ghana to North America. Relying on extensive archival research, oral interviews, and participant-observation conducted in North America, Europe, and West Africa, this study demonstrates that the more these Ghanaian Calvinists became dependent on capitalist modes of production, the more enchanted their lives and, subsequently, their church became, although in different ways within these two migrations. One striking pattern that has emerged among Ghanaian Presbyterian labor migrants in North America, for example, is a radical shift in gendered healing practices, where women have become prominent healers while a significant number of men have become spirit-possessed. Adam Mohr is Senior Writing Fellow in Anthropology in the Critical Writing Program at the University of Pennsylvania.

Deep Symbols by Edward Farley Pdf

Here is an absorbing and exceptionally perceptive account of how deep symbols or words of power (which tend to be a culture's normaltive language) have undergone diminishment in a contemporary postmodern society. Edward Farley explains that such diminishment does not necessarily imply their demise since traces of these symbols remain and invite their rethinking. Two introductory chapters spell out the character and prospect of deep symbols in postmodern society. Then follow five chapters, each of which considers a particular deep symbol: tradition, obligation (duty), reality, law, and hope. A concluding chapter shows the structural entanglement of these symbols with each other and their relation to the sacred and the interhuman. From the opening chapter- "Words of power, that is, deep and enduring symbols that shape the values of a society and guide the life of faith, morality, and action are subject to powerful forces of discreditation and even disenchantment. If this is so, we must find ways to recover their power or live without them." Edward Farley is Professor of Theology at Vanderbilt University and the author of many books, including Good and Evil: Interpreting a Human Condition.

Refounding the Church from the Underside by Robert Thornton Henderson Pdf

As the Christian church in the West moves further into the post-Christian era a dilemma rises for those thoughtful followers of Jesus Christ who find themselves in venerable, older church institutions that have become forgetful of their reason for being in the purpose of God. Such Christendom church institutions, as Henderson designates them, rather become somewhat idolatrous of their traditions, their sanctuaries, their ecclesiastical accoutrements, not to mention their dependence on a questionable category of persons called clergy. A younger generation, involved in many of these churches, is raising insistent questions about the integrity of so much of this--while at the same time being appreciative of so much that is good. Henderson's long career as a teaching pastor and mentor to the younger generations help us walk through this dilemma with refreshing insights about purpose (teleology), Kingdom integrity, form, and the disciplines necessary to transform these communities from the underside. He employs the term refounding as indicating something much more profound than renewal--a reclaiming of its original intent in the heart and mind of God.

The Enchanted Life by Sharon Blackie Pdf

A book of natural wonders, practical guidance and life-changing empowerment, by the author of the word-of-mouth bestseller If Women Rose Rooted. 'To live an enchanted life is to pick up the pieces of our bruised and battered psyches, and to offer them the nourishment they long for. It is to be challenged, to be awakened, to be gripped and shaken to the core by the extraordinary which lies at the heart of the ordinary. Above all, to live an enchanted life is to fall in love with the world all over again.' The enchanted life has nothing to do with escapism or magical thinking: it is founded on a vivid sense of belonging to a rich and many-layered world. It is creative, intuitive, imaginative. It thrives on work that has heart and meaning. It loves wild things, but returns to an enchanted home and garden. It respects the instinctive knowledge, ethical living and playfulness, and relishes story and art. Taking the inspiration and wisdom that can be derived from myth, fairy tales and folk culture, this book offers a set of practical and grounded tools for reclaiming enchantment in our lives, giving us a greater sense of meaning and of belonging to the world.

Black Magic, Witchcraft and Occultism by Sajal Nag Pdf

Black magic, occult practices and witchcraft still evoke huge curiosity, interest and amazement in the minds of people. Although witchcraft in Europe has been a widely studied phenomenon, black magic and occult are not yet a popular theme of academic research, even though India is known as a land of magic, tantra and occult. The Indian State of Assam was historically feared as the land of Kamrup-Kamakhya, black magic, witchcraft and occultic practices. It was where different Tantric cults as well as other occult practices thrived. The Khasi Hills are known for the practice of snake vampire worship. The village of Mayong is the village, where magic and occult is still practiced as a living tradition. This book is one of the rarest collections where such practices are researched, recorded and academically analyzed. It is one of those collections where studies of all three practices of Black Magic, Witchcraft and Occult are comibned into one single book.
