The volume contains thirty original essays on various aspects of English historical linguistics and philology from phonology, morphology, word-formation, syntax and pragmatics of particular works or periods in the history of English to more general articles treating the whole history of the language. Two contributions deal with scribal problems in Old and Middle English and one with Middle English dialectology. One paper is devoted to Early Modern English lexicography.
The Japanese are often characterized as exclusive and ethnocentric, yet a close examination of their linguistic and cultural history reveals a very different picture: although theirs is essentially a monolingual speech community they emerge as a people who have been significantly influenced by other languages and cultures for at least 2000 years. In this primarily sociolinguistic study Professor Loveday takes an eclectic approach, drawing on insights from other subfields of linguistics such as comparative and historical linguistics and stylistics, and from a number of other disciplines - cultural anthropology, social psychology and semiotics. Focusing in particular on the influence of Chinese and English on Japanese, and on how elements from these languages are modified when they are incorporated into Japanese, Professor Loveday offers a general model for understanding language contact behaviour across time and space. English Corpora under Japanese Eyes is a fine collection of papers written in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the Japan Association of English Corpus Studies (JAECS). Beginning with the overview of the field by Stig Johansson, an honorary member of the JAECS, the present volume shows the state-of-art in English corpus studies in Japan and demonstrates the creative uses of corpora in a wide range of research topics from studies drawing on large-scale general corpora, such as British National Corpus and the Bank of English, to studies based on more specific, historical, literary, learner and parallel corpora. Much has been written about language contact among Indo-European languages. Thus, this paper aims to shed some light in the direction of a so-called exotic language: Japanese. For many it is still a language considered to be unaffected by outer influences due to its grammatical complexity and geographical origin. But quite the opposite is the case. Japanese culture and language comprise an abundance of English or foreign expressions respectively which gives rise to take a closer look, first of all what borrowing means in theory, and then how this can be applied on the subject of Japanese borrowings in particular, in terms of how much is borrowed, especially from the English language, and how the borrowings are integrated into the native Japanese language system.
