Ensuring Minority Success in Corporate Management by Donna E. Thompson,Nancy DiTomaso Pdf

To be a corporate executive in America is to achieve a universally recognized measure of personal and professional success. The high income, privilege, prestige, and authority enjoyed by most corporate executives all attest to "making it." That is why the advancement of racial and ethnic minorities into the executive suite is one of the key barometers of the nation's progress toward full equality of opportunity. But the quest for equal opportunity in corporate management has been difficult and frustrating. Black, Hispanic, and Asian men and women are rarely found among those who run or significantly influence the direction of American corporations. The wide gap between the expectation and the reality is a continuing topic of interest to business leaders and racial and ethnic minorities, as well as to scholars of the business scene. This book edited by Thompson and DiTomaso contributes significantly to our understanding of this problem, and, most importantly, provides useful guidelines on what to do about it. Interest in the diversity of corporate management comes at a time of unprecendented challenge to United States success in the world economy. American business must now compete against aggressive producers and fi nanciers in Western Europe and Japan. More competition also has emerged from some of the rapidly developing countries in Latin America and the Pacific Rim. Our ability to design, manufacture, sell, and export goods and services in a global marketplace will increasingly determine our standard of living and prominence on the world stage.

Women and Minorities in American Professions by Joyce Tang,Earl Smith Pdf

By asking how and with what measure of success, women and minorities fare in comparison to whites in American professions, this book provides original, up-to-date analyses of the fame and fortune of newcomers in professional fields. Each chapter examines gender and/or racial differences in patterns of segregation and discrimination, career paths, and labor market outcomes in particular professions from a comparative, historical perspective. In so doing, the experiences of educated women and minorities are linked to the broader field of sociology of occupations and professions. Women and Minorities in American Professions unravels complexities in the process of career advancement in white-collar professions and offers comprehensive and interdisciplinary coverage of career achievements and issues for women and minority professionals, including theories of inequality, analyses of the impact of demographic shifts, deindustrialization, and policy changes.

Men as Managers, Managers as Men by David Collinson,Jeff Hearn Pdf

Most managers in most organizations in most countries are men. This book is the first international work to address the relationships between men, masculinities and managements. It examines the processes through which gendered managerial structures, cultures and practices are reproduced. Exploring top and middle managers, entrepreneurs, corporate executives, and public and private sector managers, the book breaks new ground by critically examining the gendered power processes that have largely been assumed and ignored by conventional organizational and management theory. As well as providing new insights into how managements and masculinities may reinforce each other, this challenging book ultimately explores the ways in which both management and men might be changed, even transformed.

Industries, Firms, and Jobs by George Farkas,Paula England Pdf

This book is a welcome reassertion of an old tradition of interdisdplinary research. That tradition has tended to atrophy in the last decade, largely because of an enormous expansion of the domain of neoc1assical economics. The expansion has fed on two sdentific developments: first, human capital theory; second, contract theory. Both developments have taken phenomena critical to the operation of the economy but previously understood in terms of categories separate and distinct from those with which economists generally work and sought to apply the same analytical techniques that we use to understand other economic problems. Human capital theory has applied conventional techniques to questions of labor supply. It began this endeavor with the supply of trained labor and then expanded to a general theory of labor supply by broadening the analysis to the allocation of time over the individual's life, the interdependendes of supply decisions within the family, and finally to the formation of the family itself. Similarly, contract theory has moved from a theory that explains the existence of c10sed economic institutions to a theory of their formation and internaioperation. The hallmark of both of these developments is the extension and applica tion of analytical techniques based on purposive maximization under con traints and the interaction of individual decision makers through a com petitive market or its analogue.

Minority Business Success by Leonard Greenhalgh,James H. Lowry Pdf

In Minority Business Success, authors Leonard Greenhalgh and James Lowry chart a path for the full participation of minority businesses in the U.S. economy. Today, minorities are well on their way to becoming the majority of our workforce and a large part of our entrepreneurial endeavors; their full contribution is essential to national competitive advantage in a global economy. The beginning of this book summarizes demographic changes in America and shows why it's in the national interest to foster the survival, prosperity, and growth of minority-owned businesses. The authors outline why these businesses are vital to the solution to our current economic woes. Next, the book turns to what minority firms must do to take their place in major value chains, and, finally, the book examines what governments, corporations, and support organizations ought to be doing to foster minority inclusion. In total, Greenhalgh and Lowry lay out a new paradigm for developing minority businesses so that they can fully contribute to our national competitive advantage and prosperity.

Developing Diversity in Organizations by Ann M. Morrison,Kristen M. Crabtree Pdf

This document consists of a digest containing descriptions and analyses of 85 articles and books that are helpful for organizational leaders, human resource managers, and consultants in developing diversity in an organization. The works cited are organized according to a five step action process derived from research describing practices that organizations can use to foster diversity. The five action steps constitute practical guidelines that managers require to assess an organization's diversity needs, design customized programs, and measure results. These steps are: (1) discover and rediscover diversity problems in the organization; (2) strengthen top management commitment; (3) choose solutions that fit a balanced strategy; (4) demand results and revisit goals; and (5) use building blocks to maintain momentum. These steps are described in detail at the beginning of their respective sections. The descriptions of references are organized into six main categories consisting of the five action steps and a small selection of general references. Within each category, references are sequenced in alphabetical order by the author's last name and are separated further by specific topics. Works presented at recent conferences or other reports available only from the author are listed in an appendix that lists some of these references, including access information. Readers interested in learning more about a particular step in the process of developing diversity may use the general contents to turn first to that step or to a section of that step. An overview of the digest can be found in the complete contents. An index lists all of the authors. (DK)
