Back Pain in Horses by Anonim Pdf

Back pain and diseases of the spine and pelvis are significant problems in all types of performance horses, potentially causing poor performance, lost training days and wastage. As a result, back pain represents a considerable economic and welfare issue for the equine performance industries. Evaluation of back problems in performance horses is an important part of physiotherapy and veterinary practice. Yet back pain syndromes are insidious and difficult to diagnose due to the variability of presenting signs ranging from overt lameness or pain on palpation of the back to subtle gait alterations or even behavioural changes. Complicating matters further, multiple problems often coexist, particularly lameness and back pain Research to date has been led by the veterinary profession with a focus on pathoanatomical problems underlying back pain. However, advances in human back pain have been led by physiotherapy research. Physiotherapy research has focussed on the neuromotor control model and the associated dysfunction, especially of the epaxial or deep back muscles that occurs as a result of back pain from different forms of pathology. Therefore, our overall aim was to increase the knowledge of back pain in horses by using this novel approach. Specifically; how pathology of the back itself or other parts of the musculoskeletal system is reflected in the epaxial muscles and to determine the relationship between atrophy or dysfunction of these muscles and pain and/or poor athletic performance.

Equine Lameness for the Layman by G. Robert Grisel, DVM Pdf

Lameness is the most common cause of poor performance in the horse. This makes management of his soundness over the long–term integral to both his general well–being and his ability to participate in recreational and competitive activities. Unfortunately, most equine caretakers are unable to perceive abnormal movement in the horse, extending the period between the onset of a problem and its eventual treatment, and the longer an issue is allowed to persist, the greater the chance that it will progress. Many equine veterinarians also find it difficult to visually decipher lameness, which leads to lengthy, expensive, and often inaccurate diagnostic work–ups. It is with these two key audiences in mind that Dr. Bob Grisel has created a book unlike any other. With hundreds of illustrations, dozens of charts, and links to online videos of explanatory case studies, readers are given a complete course in observing, identifying, and decoding equine lameness. Dr. Grisel helps you interpret what is seen, plain and simple (no need for medical knowledge of equine anatomy and pathology). Whether first–time horse owner or seasoned professional, you are guaranteed to come away with a detailed, systematic, and comprehensive method for a happier, healthier equine partner.

This book offers a state-of-the-art, evidence-based reference to all aspects of veterinary cytology. Truly multidisciplinary in its approach, chapters are written by experts in fields ranging from clinical pathology to internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, and dermatology, drawing the various specialties together to create a comprehensive picture of cytology's role in diagnosis and treatment of animal disease. Firmly grounded in the primary literature, the book focuses on companion animals, with special chapters for species with fewer publications. Chapters are logically organized by body system, with additional chapters on tumors of particular import and diagnostic decision making. The first two sections of Veterinary Cytology focus on cytology techniques, quality control, and special laboratory techniques. Subsequent sections are organ/tissue-based and reflect what is known about the canine, feline, and equine species. This is followed by chapters on non-traditional species, including exotic companion mammals, rabbits, cattle, camelids, non-human primates, reptiles and birds, amphibians, fish, invertebrates, and sheep and goats. The last section highlights some unique features of the applications of cytology in industry settings. Provides a gold-standard reference to data-driven information about cytologic analysis in companion animal species Brings together authors from a wide range of specialties to present a thorough survey of cytology's use in veterinary medicine Offers broader species coverage and greater depth than any cytology reference currently available Veterinary Cytology is an essential resource for clinical and anatomic pathologists and any specialist in areas using cytology, including veterinary oncologists, criticalists, surgeons, ophthalmologists, dermatologists, and internists.
