Escaped! Adventures in German Captivity (Classic Reprint) by Wallace Ellison Pdf

Excerpt from Escaped! Adventures in German Captivity "Impossible!" I exclaimed. My friend shrugged his shoulders. "Read for yourself," he replied, and handed me a copy of the Frankfurter Zeitung of August 5, 1914. Yes, it was true, Great Britain had declared war on Germany. The news came as an overwhelming surprise. I had been among the many who thought that human foresight in the twentieth century would find some way of settling international disputes other than by the arbitrament of the hellish devices of modern warfare. I was wrong. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. My German Prisons by Horace Gray Gilliland Pdf

Excerpt from My German Prisons: The Story of My Two and a Half Years of Captivity in Germany and My Final Escape, November 14, 1914 April 8, 1917 The writer was appealed to, so constantly and so earnestly, to write his experiences, and was so weary recounting them, that at last he decided to put into print a short account of the happenings within his own personal knowledge during his two and a half years' imprisonment in Germany. He was also encouraged to do so from other and more important reasons. There are countless people throughout the world who have been so unfortunate as to have intimate friends and relatives in captivity in Germany. In the opinion of the writer, these people ought to know, from one who has had a bitter experience, to which these pages will testify, the true conditions under which the wretched prisoners existed. These pages are entirely uncensored and aim at a true record of events, in which there is no word of hearsay, or stories borrowed from others. As such they must stand. To those who may be inclined to be skeptical towards the newspaper reports of German brutality, it is hoped that this narrative will come as a revelation. Escaping From Germany (Classic Reprint) by Edward Page Pdf

Excerpt from Escaping From Germany In writing the story of my three attempts to escape from Germany, and the experiences and impressions during the three years I was a prisoner of war there, I do so for several reasons, the chief being the requests of my family and intimate friends, that they shall be placed on record, and a feeling within myself that in so relating them an opportunity will be given, not only to my own countrymen and countrywomen, but to the folk of the other allied countries now linked together in the great fight for democracy and freedom, against tyranny and oppression, of studying for themselves the conditions under which we were compelled to live. They will thus learn our sufferings, both mental and physical, of our struggles against starvation, disease, vermin, and filth of all kinds, and in the study be able to compare the treatment meted out to Germans interned in the different countries of the Allied Powers, particularly our own, and that which we received from the hands of our captors during the time the fortunes of war had caused us to be interned in Germany. Captivity and Escape (Classic Reprint) by M. Jean Martin Pdf

Excerpt from Captivity and Escape WE have hitherto had many volumes of the doings of British soldiers at the front and in captivity, but few of our French Allies. The experiences of Monsieur J. Martin, written originally in French, give such a vivid picture of prison life in Germany, that they have an interest far beyond the mere personal one which his friends and countrymen attach to his name. Brought up in France, amidst all the charm and culture of the best french-protestant tradi tions, he was educated at Rouen, and he finally took his degree in 1912. During his studies he spent much time in England, where his charm 'of manner and chivalrous spirit made him many friends. Moreover, his love for games brought him in close touch with our people, and he won great credit for himself in the football field. Outwitting the Hun by Pat O'Brien Pdf

Excerpt from Outwitting the Hun: My Escape From a German Prison Camp Of every one who befriended me. I hope particularly that every good Hollander who played the part of the Good Samaritan to me so bountifully after my escape from Belgium will see these pages and feel that I am absolutely sincere when I say that words cannot begin to express my sense of gratitude to the Dutch people. It is needless for me to add how deeply I feel for my fellow-prisoners in Germany who were less fortunate than I. Poor, poor fellows - they are the real victims Of the war. I hope that every one Of them may soon be restored to that freedom whose value I never fully realized until after I had had to fight so hard to regain it. Reminiscences of a Prisoner of War and His Escape (Classic Reprint) by Daniel Avery Langworthy Pdf

Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Prisoner of War and His Escape Soon after my escape from captivity and my arrival at the home of my father-in - law, at Elmira, New York, where my good wife was, my sister Sarah, who was older than myself, and her husband, came to see me. She sat down by my side and said: Now Daniel, tell me all about it. How you were captured, how treated while a prisoner of war, how you made your escape and worked your way from Columbia, South Carolina, to Elmira. She held me to a strict account until she had the full story. I then told her that if after that I should be asked about it I would refer them to her (she would have given a good narrative), but unfortunately she is not living now. I have never been much inclined to talk about my prison life, nor had thought of writing about it until recently when some of my comrades, who had been talking with me about it, sug gested and strongly urged that I write it out. The result of which is these reminiscences. Doubtless I could have told this story betterfifty years ago, for, as I did not keep a diary or any memorandum, it is entirely from mem ory, yet the events made a fixed impression on my mind and I believe that what I have herein narrated is correct. I was born January 3rd. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Wind in the Wires and an Escaper's Log by Duncan Grinnell-Milne Pdf

Duncan Grinnell-Milne was one of that select band of young men who made history in the air between 1915 and 1918 when they learned to fly in machines that resembled box-kites and laid the foundations of aerial combat which future generations would follow. He became a flying ace, with six confirmed aerial victories, and he spent two years as a prisoner of war before escaping from German captivity to fly and fight again. He took part in the great aerial offensive of 1918 which contributed to the winning of the war. His story of the war in the air is one of the most exciting accounts by a pilot of the Royal Flying Corps it is also one of the best written and, ninety years after it was first published, it is a classic of its kind. Endorsements ..'We have no hesitation in ranking it with the very best of the war books.' Daily Telegraph'Wind in the Wires is a war book in class by itself. From beginning to end the book a lure to readoutstanding.' Flight'An addition to the number of books about flying needs more excuse than the mere subject of air fighting. This book is excused by the charm of the author's style, by his judgement in pruning his story, and by the interest which his own personality arouses.' Manchester Guardian'The most beautiful air book that has yet appeared.' Birmingham Post'The most interesting and attractive quality of the book is the fact that it gives a graphic account of the fledgling days of wartime flying. When the time comes for the great writer of the future to compose a comprehensive narrative of the war, this is one of the books that will help him acquire a true perspective.' Nottingham Guardian
