Essays in Bioethics 1924-1948 by Fritz Jahr Pdf

In 1785, German philosopher Immanuel Kant introduced the 'categorical imperative' for human persons, based on the sanctity of the moral law. Over a century later, Fritz Jahr, a Protestant pastor and educator, expanded on Kant's imperative, offering an integrated view of living natural and social environments. Jahr coined the term 'Bio-Ethik' (Bioethics) and defined the 'bioethical imperative' (also based on the sanctity of life) as: "Respect every Living Being as an end in itself and treat it, if possible, as such!" In this book, 22 essays document the early European roots of modern bioethics and provide guidance for developing global cultures in integrated bioethics. Harmonizing Bioethics by Michael Cheng-tek Tai Pdf

Harmonizing Bioethics is about relationships of peoples and cultures, our civilizations and living environments. Following the original concept of bioethics by Fritz Jahr, we search for harmonizing discourses in the process of industrialization and globalization. Confucius 'compassion' and Jesus 'love your neighbor' are the global backbones of our actual and future deliberations. 'Do not hurt, be compassionate, be respectful, be responsible'. Issues such as caring for the poor, euthanasia, organ transplantation and physician-lay collaboration and teamwork are discussed in transcultural evaluation. A special aspect of urban bioethics and culture discusses also the influence of artificial intelligence. Building upon these pluriperspective grounds will direct us and the world in future collaboration as a bridge in global ways in integrating peoples and values advancing to a new age for all.

Cultures in Bioethics by Hans-Martin Sass Pdf

Biotopes and Bioethics are highly complex and adaptable systems of Bios. Individual bios is terminal, but the stream of Bios goes on. Basic properties of Bios such as communication and cooperation, competence and competition, contemplation and calculation, compassion and cultivation come in different shades of light and dark in individuals and species, in history and ecology. Hans-Martin Sass discusses the territories of Bios and Bioethics, based on his involvement in decades of consulting in academia, business and politics. Special attention is given to the vision and role of Bioethics in research and training, in religious and cultural traditions, and in the survival, happiness, and health of corporate, social and political bodies. Hans-Martin Sass is Senior Research Scholar Emeritus at Georgetown University, Washington DC, and Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Ruhr University, Bochum. 1926-2016 Fritz Jahr's Bioethics by Amir Muzur,Hans-Martin Sass Pdf

The ethics of valuing bios in all their forms and shapes has been an essential part of great and successful cultures from the millennia-old Vedic tradition of 'tattvamasi'-this is also you: this plant, this animal, this microbe, this ecosystem-to the simple hands-on call of Jesus's 'love your neighbor.' But as a term bioethics was coined 90 years ago by Fritz Jahr, an educator and pastor in Halle in his Bioethical Imperative 'Respect every Living Being as an end in itself and treat it, if possible, as such.' This book examines the development of Fritz Jahr's concept of bioethics over the last ninety years. Van Rensselaer Potter and His Place in the History of Bioethics by Amir Muzur,Iva Rincic Pdf

Van Rensselaer Potter (1911-2001), the biochemist-oncologist of University of Wisconsin-Madison, was long been related to the invention of the term "bioethics". Even today, knowing that the German theologian Fritz Jahr (1895-1953) is to be credited for this invention, Potter's ideas do not lose on their importance, primarily for his opposition to a bioethics narrowed down onto biomedical issues. The book represents the first monograph on Potter's life and work worldwide, telling a fascinating story about a concerned top scientist and humanist.

Health and Happiness of Political Bodies by Hans-Martin Sass Pdf

In 1926, the German pastor Fritz Jahr in Halle coined the term `Bioethik' and defined a `Bio-Ethical Imperative: Respect every living being as an end in itself and treat it, if possible, as such'. Bioethics since then has grown from medical ethics and social and political strategies to multidisciplinary and integrated disciplines of research and consulting. In 2020, reflecting and mediating the interactive and integrated ecosystems and interactive networks in biology, society, business, technology and communication, I submit a wider integrated biocultural, corporate and political `Bio-Cultural Imperative: Support direct human inter-action and common-sense as an end in itself and use hardware and software tools only in stabilizing healthy and happy cultures in the bodies of ecologies, corporations and politics'. In 1969 a human walked on the moon, in 1989 the Berlin Wall fell down, in 2001 the World Trade Center in New York fell down, in 2020 a global Corona pandemic fell down on people and communities. Biological, political and corporate bodies change, and we change with them and in them: `tempora mutantur et nos mutamur in illis'. (Hans Martin Sass, preface)

Fritz Jahr and the Emergence of European Bioethics by Iva Rincic,Amir Muzur Pdf

The book presents the results of a long research into the life and work of the German theologian and teacher Fritz Jahr (1895–1953) from Halle an der Saale, who was the first to use the term "bioethics", as early as 1926. It is a revised history of bioethics with an overview of all 22 of Jahr’s known published papers. The analysis follows the diffusion after 1997 of the discovery of Fritz Jahr worldwide and particularly the contribution of Croatian bioethicists to it.

From the 'Rivers of Babylon' to the 'Rivers of the Internet' by Hans-Martin Sass Pdf

The ‘rivers of Babylon’ were built 3500 years ago by technical and political leaders between Euphrates and Tigris, creating the high culture of Mesopotamia, cultivating dry desert lands into fertile soil, built central cities and the Gardens of Semiramis, using the waterways for exchange of communication, commerce, and control. The ‘rivers of the Internet’ are built in the 21st century creating integrated cultures of people, of things and everything, of geospaces and cyberspaces, of artificial intelligence (AI) and artificial sensuality (AS), changing individuals, cultures and politics, creating newly integrated state and non-state bodies of culture, commerce, control, politics, and power. New tools and technologies have changed our ideational, environmental, economic, political and cultural biotopes, but people and communities are still good or bad as they were 3500 years ago. Hegel measured progress in world history via the ‘progress of the ‘consciousness of freedom’ in communities and civilizations. The Hegelian geography teacher and 1848 rebel Ernst Kapp measured progress in world history via the ‘cultivation of lands and communities by tools and technologies’. Should we understand World History as unilinear (Hegel), or rotating (Polybius), or spiraling (Burckhardt), or conditional on tools and techniques (Kapp), or based on trends and fashions? Hans-Martin Sass (* 1935 in Hagen /Germany) now lives in Reston, Virginia. He holds faculty positions in philosophy and bioethics at Ruhr University, Bochum, FRG (since 1966), and Georgetown University, Washington DC (since 1980); Honorary Professor at Renmin University (1985) and Peking Union Medical College (2001) in Beijing PRC. 100+ separate publications, 250+ journal articles, 300+ invited lectures.

Rethinking Health Care Ethics by Stephen Scher,Kasia Kozlowska Pdf

The goal of this open access book is to develop an approach to clinical health care ethics that is more accessible to, and usable by, health professionals than the now-dominant approaches that focus, for example, on the application of ethical principles. The book elaborates the view that health professionals have the emotional and intellectual resources to discuss and address ethical issues in clinical health care without needing to rely on the expertise of bioethicists. The early chapters review the history of bioethics and explain how academics from outside health care came to dominate the field of health care ethics, both in professional schools and in clinical health care. The middle chapters elaborate a series of concepts, drawn from philosophy and the social sciences, that set the stage for developing a framework that builds upon the individual moral experience of health professionals, that explains the discontinuities between the demands of bioethics and the experience and perceptions of health professionals, and that enables the articulation of a full theory of clinical ethics with clinicians themselves as the foundation. Against that background, the first of three chapters on professional education presents a general framework for teaching clinical ethics; the second discusses how to integrate ethics into formal health care curricula; and the third addresses the opportunities for teaching available in clinical settings. The final chapter, "Empowering Clinicians", brings together the various dimensions of the argument and anticipates potential questions about the framework developed in earlier chapters.

The Corona pandemic kills people, endangers families, friends, communities, companies, institutions, societies, economies and global networks. Families and friends cannot get together, visiting the sick, nor attending funerals. This pestilence is clearly a cultural, economic and political disease. 40 leaders in medical and sociological research, in politics, religion, and consulting from 24 countries offer diverse, sometimes controversial answers, collected by Martin Woesler and Hans-Martin Sass .

Insistent Life by Brianne Donaldson,Ana Bajželj Pdf

"Insistent Life is the first full-length interdisciplinary treatment of the foundational principles and principles of application for engaging contemporary bioethics within the Jain tradition. The book fills a significant gap in both the fields of bioethics and Jain studies since Jainism, perhaps more so than any other South Asian tradition, is strongly focused on the ethics of birth, life, and death, with regard to humans as well as other living beings. Brianne Donaldson and Ana Bajželj analyze a diverse range of Jain texts and contemporary sources on Jain doctrines and practices, alongside bioethics, to identify Jain perspectives on bioethical issues while highlighting the complexity of their personal, professional, and public dimensions. The book also features extensive original data--represented in visual graphs--based on an international survey the authors conducted with Jain medical professionals in India and diaspora communities of North America, Europe, and Africa"--

The Guodian Bamboo Slips Lao Zi by Cai Hou Pdf

The 85 Lao Zi bamboo slips from around 300 B. C. E. are the earliest texts of what later became known as the Tao Te King. These texts are very original and not yet intermingled with Confucian philosophy, governance, or ethics. This English translation presents the Tao Bamboo Slips in modern simplified Chinese characters, with commentaries and a comparison of the modern Chinese version to the old characters. This bilingual Chinese-English publication is a contribution to the crosscultural visions and values of the New SiIk Road of the 21st century.
