Essays in Biography and Criticism (Classic Reprint) by Peter Bayne Pdf

Excerpt from Essays in Biography and Criticism An apology may be deemed requisite for offering to the public a work, of which even the germ is found in pieces composed at so early an age. Two consid rations chie y weighed with the writer in permitting the publication. He could not let slip the opportunity Offered of bringing together that portion Of his early performances, to which, however sensible of their defects, he could yet deliberately append his signa ture, setting them apart from that far larger portion which he would now altogether cast behind him, as mere confusions Of a too much wasted youth. And still more powerfully was he in uenced by the re ec tion, which has for a long time had a firm hold on his mind, that, where a reading public is so extended as that Of America, capacities Of literary enjoyment, and susceptibilities to instruction, will vary so much, both in kind and degree, that it is by no means easy, if possible, to judge, within certain limits, from the ah stract character Of a book, whether it will or will not prove useless: and that, therefore, an author, abdi cating, in great measure, the right to decide as to the worthiness or unworthiness Of his compositions, ought to bow to the unsought expression of public will. Such an expression seemed to be found in the Offer of American publishers to issue these volumes: and the author screens himself against all attack, by the plain declaration, that they would not now, perhaps would never, have appeared, but for the enterprise and generosity Of Messrs. Gould and lincoln. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Biographical and Critical Essays, Vol. 1 of 2 by A. Hayward Pdf

Excerpt from Biographical and Critical Essays, Vol. 1 of 2: Reprinted From Reviews, With Additions and Corrections The reason, obvious enough, is given in a sentence from Dunlop's 'history of Fiction, ' quoted by Scott Those minute references immediately lead us to give credit to the whole narrative, since we think they would hardly have been mentioned unless they were true.' Ars est celare artem. The effect would fail if they had a showy character, as if invented for effect. Homer's employment of such details simply proves that he was a master of his art, and it is one of his highest triumphs to have produced on the distinguished statesman and scholar an effect analogous to that which Swift produced on the rude sailor, who declared that he knew Captain Gulliver very well, but that he lived at Queenhithe, not at Wapping. Essays in Ecclesiastical Biography (Classic Reprint) by James Stephen Pdf

Excerpt from Essays in Ecclesiastical Biography I prefix these few words to these volumes, not to deprecate criticism, which is always a vain and is not always a sincere attempt, but in order to explain that such censures as may justly be due to what I have written, have not been provoked by an y inordinate solicitude of mine to appear before the world in mv own person as the writer of a book, nor by any wish to assume to myself the character of a teacher on the sacred topics to which so large a part of this book is devoted. Critical and Miscellaneous Essays by Thomas Carlyle Pdf

Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays: Collected and Republished; Vols. I. And II Of his Life of Richter these preliminary observations may be our excuse for saying but little. He brags much, in his Preface, that it is all true and genuine; for Richter's widow, it seems, had, by public advertisement, cautioned the world against it; another biography, partly by the illustrious de ceased himself, partly by Otto, his oldest friend and the appointed Editor of his Works, being actually in preparation. This rouses the indignant Spirit of Doring, and he stoutly asseverates that, his documents being altogether authentic, this biography is no pseudo-biography. With still greater truth he might have asseverated that it was no biography at all. Well are he and Hennings Of Gotha aware thatthis thing of shreds and patches has been vamped together for sale only. Except a few letters to Kunz, the Bamberg Bookseller, which turn mainly on the purchase of spectacles, and the jour neyings and freightage of two boxes that used to pass and repass between Richter and Kunz's circulating library; with three or four notes of Similar importance, and chiefly to other booksellers, there are no biographical documents here, which were not Open to all Europe as well as to Heinrich Doring. Indeed, very nearly one half of the Life is occupied with a description of the funeral and its appendages - how the sixty torches, with a number of lanterns and pitchpans, were arranged; how this Patrician or Professor followed that, through Friedrich Street, Chancery Street, and other streets of Bayreuth; and how at last the torches all went out, as Dr. Gabler and Dr. Spatzier were perorating (decidedly in bom bast) over the grave. Then, it seems, there were meetings held in various parts of Germany, to solemnize the memory of Richter; among the rest, one in the Museum of Frankfort-ou Mayn; where a Doctor Berne speaks another long Speech, if possible in still more decided bombast. Next come threnodies from all the four winds, mostly on very Splay-footed metre. The whole of which is here snatched from the kind oblivion of the newspapers, and lives in Settle's numbers one day more. English Essays (Classic Reprint) by Walter Cochrane Bronson Pdf

Excerpt from English Essays Biographies of the essayists represented, exposition of the thought, and literary criticism have been excluded from the Notes, in the belief that such matters are better conveyed by histories of literature and by lectures. The Oxplanatory notes are perhaps fuller and more precise than some teachers will care for: These may be reminded of Hazlitt's remark about the allegory in The Faerie Queene; if one lets the notes alone, they won't bite him. In many cases the more precise form of statement has been used because it is more concise, as well as more valuable for reference; thus it takes less space to give the dates of a man's birth and death than to say that he lived in the latter part of such-and-such a century, but it does not follow that the student should be required to learn the exact dates. As to number of notes, I cannot be alone in my ex perience that most college undergraduates, in the earlier years of their course, are lamentably ignorant, not only of literature, but of history, biography, and art, and that if they are to understand what they read considerable annotation is necessary. Furthermore, although the text may often be intelligible, in a general way, without the reader's knowing the significance of an allusion or the source of a quotation, it may well be one of the secondary benefits of reading essays like those here contained that the student should widen. If only superficially and at second hand, his knowledge of the world of letters and men. I hope, however, that all teachers who use the book will urge their classes to read each essay through, at first, without looking at a note, in order to get the thought as a whole and the general effect; but also that they will then adopt the apostolic method of St. Philip, and put to the rider in these literary chariots that embarrassing but profitable question, Understandest thou what thou readest? Critical and Miscellaneous Essays (Classic Reprint) by Thomas Carlyle Pdf

Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays That faculty of irony, of caricature, which often passes by the name of humour. But eon Sists chiefly in a certain superficial distortion or reversal of objects, and ends at best iii laughter. Bears no resemblance to the humour of Richter. A shallow endowment this; and often more a habit than an endowment. It is but a poor fraction of humour; or rather. It is the body to which the soul is wanting; any life it has being false. Artificial, and irrational. True humour springs not more from the head than from the heart; it is not contempt, its e'sence is love; it issues not in laughter. Essays From Reviews (Classic Reprint) by George Stewart Pdf

Excerpt from Essays From Reviews In the scottish review, published at faisley, London and New York, and in the arena, published at Boston, Mass. There appeared at intervals, during the last few years, several papers of mine on A meri can poets and their art. At the request of some friends, I have made a selection of these Essays from Reviews. The sketches in this little volume, dealing in a general way, with the lives and careers of longfellow, lowell, holmes and whittier, are ln tended as introductions to the writings of the great New England quartette of singers, whose work has done so much to make literature in America, what it is to-day.
