Essays in Medieval Chinese Literature and Cultural History by Paul W. Kroll Pdf

This is one of a pair of volumes by Paul Kroll (the companion volume deals with medieval Taoism and the poetry of Li Po). Collecting eleven essays by this leading scholar of Chinese poetry, the volume presents a selection of studies devoted to the medieval period, centering especially on the T'ang dynasty. It opens with the author's famous articles on the dancing horses of T'ang, on the emperor Hsüan Tsung's abandonment of his capital and forced execution of his prized consort, and on poems relating to the holy mountain T'ai Shan (with special attention to Li Po). Following these are detailed examinations of landscape and mountain imagery in the poetry of the "High T'ang" period in the mid-8th century, and of an extraordinary attempt made in the mid-9th-century to recall in verse and anecdote the great days of the High T'ang. The second section of the book includes two articles on birds (notably the kingfisher and the egret) in medieval poetry, and four of Kroll's influential studies focusing on the verse-form known as the fu or "rhapsody," especially drawing from the 3rd-century poet Ts'ao Chih and the 7th-century poet Lu Chao-lin.

Essays on Medieval Literature (Classic Reprint) by W. P. Ker Pdf

Excerpt from Essays on Medieval Literature These Essays have all been printed before. The first of them served as an introduction to the first volume of Sir Henry Craik's English Prose Selection (Macmillan, 1893). The "Similes of Dante" appeared in the Modern Quarterly for March 1898. "Boccaccio" was read as a Taylorian lecture at Oxford, and published, in most honourable company, with other lectures of the same foundation - Studies in European Literature - at the Clarendon Press, 1900. "Chaucer" (Part of a review of Mr. Skeat's edition) and the article on Mr. Macaulay's Gower are from the Quarterly Review, April 1895 and April 1903. The essay on Froissart (and on his English translator) was written at the request of Mr. W. E. Henley for the new edition of Lord Berners - The Cronykle of Syr John Froissart - in the Tudor Translations (Nutt, 1901-3). Simple Forms by Douglas Gray Pdf

Simple Forms is a study of popular or folk literature in the medieval period. Focusing both on the vast body of oral literature that lies behind the written texts which have survived from the medieval period and on the popular literature provided by literate authors for audiences of hearers or readers with varying degrees of literacy, Douglas Gray leads new readers to a productively complicated understanding of the relationship between medieval popular culture and the culture of the learned. He argues that medieval society was stratified, in what seems to us a rigid way, but that culturally it was more flexible. Literary topics, themes, and forms moved; there was much borrowing, and a constant interaction. Popular tales, motifs, and ideas passed into learned or courtly works; learned forms and attitudes made their way in into popular culture. All in all this seems to have been a fruitful symbiosis. The book's twelve chapters are principally organised genre, covering epics, ballads, popular romances, folktales, the German sage, legends, animal tales and fables, proverbs, riddles, satires, songs, and drama.

Epic and Romance Essays on Medieval Literature by William Ker Pdf

Epic and Romance Essays on Medieval Literature By William Ker This book is now reprinted without addition or change, except in a few small details. If it had to be written over again, many things, no doubt, would be expressed in a different way. For example, after some time happily spent in reading the Danish and other ballads, I am inclined to make rather less of the interval between the ballads and the earlier heroic poems, and I have learned (especially from Dr. Axel Olrik) that the Danish ballads do not belong originally to simple rustic people, but to the Danish gentry in the Middle Ages. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. Epic and Romance Essays on Medieval Literature (Classic Reprint) by W. P. KER Pdf

Excerpt from Epic and Romance Essays on Medieval Literature These essays are intended as a general description of some of the principal forms of narrative literature in the Middle Ages, and as a review Of some of the more interesting works in each period. It is hardly necessary to say that the conclusion is one in which nothing is concluded, and that whole tracts of literature have been barely touched on - the English metrical romances, the Middle High German poems, the ballads, Northern and Southern - which would require to be considered in any systematic treatment of this part of history.
