Evaluation in English Tourism Texts on Chinese, British and American Websites by KANG NING Pdf

Informed by the APPRAISAL Theory, this book analyses the construction of evaluative meanings in web-based English tourism texts (ETTs). It investigates the semantic potentiality of evaluative meaning in English tourism texts on Chinese, British and American websites, as well as the similarities and differences in constructing evaluation among the three varieties of ETTs. It is aimed to discover the characteristic preferences for particular appraisal resources in constructing evaluation in native ETTs, and to find out the deficiencies in using evaluation in ETTs on Chinese websites. Two analytical procedures are adopted: first, based on large corpus files, it discusses the semantic potentiality for evaluative meaning in the three types of ETTs; then, various evaluation features are explored in detail concerning resources of ATTITUDE, ENGAGEMENT and GRADUATION under the APPRAISAL framework. All discussions are conducted by combining quantitative statistics with qualitative analyses. Theoretically, the study modifies and extends some aspects of the APPRAISAL Theory so as to facilitate the analysis of evaluation in tourism discourse. The study is also instructive for Chinese ESL/EFL writers in writing English tourist texts or translating Chinese tourism texts into English.

Assessing the English Language Writing of Chinese Learners of English by Liz Hamp-Lyons,Yan Jin Pdf

This book focuses on the assessment of English language writing in China mainland, the territories of Hong Kong and Macau, and Taiwan. The first part of the book describes how writing in English has been assessed in Chinese contexts in the past 25 years, and how it continues to be assessed at present. The second part of the book presents reports of work such as formative classroom-based assessment, feedback-based or feedback-led approaches, learning-oriented assessment, portfolios, as well as the important issue of teacher professional development in writing assessment. This two-part division relates to and reflects what has been happening in writing assessment internationally, in the UK from the 1940s, and in the US in the past 25 years. The use of English for international business communication, for international political negotiations and its rapidly increasing use as a medium of instruction in some subject areas has led to a rapid increase in the numbers of Chinese L1 speakers who are learning and being assessed in English. This is often done with an emphasis on reading and writing. The vast majority of assessments of English language writing are done through large-scale direct testing that uses simple prompts/tasks and short writing samples. This book explores best practices in assessing the writing in English of native speakers of Chinese. Assessing the English Language Writing of Chinese Learners of English edited by long-time experts Liz Hamp-Lyons and Yan Jin clearly demonstrates the authors’ collective years of writing and teaching about writing assessment. The book’s 13 chapters, written by recognized experts in assessment of Chinese speakers learning English, represent a wide array of important topics written in reader friendly language and offering evidence for pedagogical practices as well as high-stakes testing of writing. Teachers, researchers, administrators of writing programs in China, and test developers who seek counsel about this population need look no further than to add Assessing the English Language Writing of Chinese Learners of English to their reading list. This is the first handbook to provide a comprehensive coverage of the main approaches that theorize translation and globalization, offering a wide-ranging selection of chapters dealing with substantive areas of research. Taking a genuinely interdisciplinary approach, the authors are leading researchers drawn from the social sciences, as well as from translation studies. The chapters cover major areas of current interdisciplinary interest, including climate change, migration, borders, democracy and human rights, as well as key topics in the discipline of translation studies. This handbook also highlights the increasing significance of translation in the most pressing social, economic and political issues of our time, while accounting for the new technologies and practices that are currently deployed to cope with growing translation demands. With five sections covering key concepts, people, culture, economics and politics, and a substantial introduction and conclusion, this handbook is an indispensable resource for students and researchers of translation and globalization within translation and interpreting studies, comparative literature, sociology, global studies, cultural studies and related areas.

Religion and Tourism by Michael Stausberg Pdf

This book explores the dynamic interaction between religion and tourism in the modern world, asking questions such as 'what are the relationships between tourism and pilgrimage?' and 'what happens to religious performances, places and festivals that function as tourist attractions?' Surveying the growing body of work in the field, Michael Stausberg argues that tourism should be a major focus of research within religious studies.
