Evidence-Based Surgery by Achilles Thoma,Sheila Sprague,Sophocles H. Voineskos,Charles H. Goldsmith Pdf

The purpose of this book specifically is to teach surgeons (academic or community), surgical fellows and surgical residents regardless of the surgical specialty, the skills to appraise what they read in the surgical literature. Surgeons need to be able to understand what they read before applying the conclusions of a surgical article to their practice. As most surgeons do not have the extra training in health research methodology, understanding how the research was done, how to interpret the results and finally deciding to apply them to the patient level is indeed a difficult task. Chapters explain the methodological issues pertaining to the various study designs reported in the surgical literature. Most chapters begin with a clinical scenario with uncertain course of action with which most surgeons are struggling. Readers are taught how to search the literature for the best evidence that will answer the surgical problem under discussion. An identified article that seems relevant to the problem you are investigating can be appraised by addressing 3 key questions: 1). Is the study I am reading valid? 2). What are the results of this study? 3). Can I apply these results to my patients? While the primary goal of Evidence-Based Surgery is to teach surgeons how to appraise the surgical literature, an added benefit is that the concepts explained here may help research-minded surgeons produce higher quality research.

Surgery by Cohn,Stephen M. Cohn,Steven T. Brower Pdf

A guide to "when to" and "what to" rather than "how to," this book provides evidence-based surgical reviews to provide credible answers to age-old surgical management questions. The management issues presented are oriented toward interventions and use evidence-based techniques to assess the safety and efficacy of new treatments and rehabilitative or preventative interventions. Each chapter is organized around the key questions essential to delineating the current status of evidence related to the subject reviewed. Publications from the past decade are cited that provide Level I and II evidence using the Oxford scale. Throughout Elective General Surgery, careful assessment of the validity of intervention studies and the strength of the evidence that they provide underlies the choices of cited publications. The information presented in this volume guides the scientific surgeon in providing state-of-the-art care and in optimizing the use of medical resources without losing sight of the need to address the unique needs of individual patients.

Surgical Decision Making by Rifat Latifi Pdf

This text provides a comprehensive and state-of-the-art overview of the major issues specific to the surgical decision-making process. These include patient’s anatomy and pathophysiology as well as the magnitude of the injury at hand, the surgeon's own physiologic and mental status, training and experience, and many other factors such as creativity, leadership skills, and overall "biochemistry" of the environment. The text reviews theoretical as well as objective information that surgeons use to make intraoperative decisions in situations, often with very limited data; decisions that will decide between a patient's living or dying, such as in trauma surgery and other complex surgeries. How surgeons choose one technical approach over another in these situations is covered. This book fills a critical need for resource materials on these topics and includes both theoretical as well as practical presentations of many typical patients seen in operating rooms around the world. Surgical Decision Making: Beyond the Evidence Based Surgery is written by academic and clinical practicing surgeons that face intraoperative decision situations on a daily basis and therefore provides a unique and valuable resource in the field for surgeons currently in training and for those already in clinical or research practice.
