F-82 Twin Mustang Pilot's Flight Operating Instructions by United States Air Force,USAF Pdf

The F-82 ¿Twin Mustang¿ was conceived during WWII as a long-range fighter escort. Like the P-51, it was designed by North American's brilliant engineer, Edgar Schmued. The F-82 utilized two extended P-51 fuselages, mounted to a newly- designed center wing and tail. The plane incorporated new propeller assemblies and a unique, four-wheel landing gear. In short, while the plane would be cosmetically similar to the Mustang, in reality it was an entirely new beast. The F-82 wasn¿t ready before WWII ended, but the program escaped cancellation, and planes entered operational service in 1948. The F-82 became the last piston- powered fighter ordered by the USAF. It flew as an escort for SAC B-29s, and with distinction as a night fighter in Korea. It was retired in 1953. Originally printed by the USAF and North American, this pilot¿s handbook provides a glimpse inside the cockpit of this warbird. Originally classified ¿Restricted¿, the manual was de-classified and is here reprinted in book form.

Twin Mustang by Alan C. Carey Pdf

“A comprehensive look at the 272-plane F-82 fleet . . . This is a fine addition to Carey’s body of work and to anyone’s aviation library.”—HistoryNet One of the most unusual and remarkable American fighter aircraft, the F-82 Twin Mustang was the last mass production propeller-driven fighter acquired by the U.S. Air Force. Originally intended as a very long-range fighter escort for the Boeing B-29 Superfortress during World War II, it arrived too late to see combat and evolved into a night and all-weather fighter during the post-war years. Combat operations in the Korean War followed, along with a host of other dynamic episodes of deployment. This work traces the developmental, operational, and combat history of this unique American fighter and features 120 photographs and illustrations, many of which have never been published before. Seven chapters, all extensively illustrated, cover the aircraft’s development, descriptions of the variants and sub-types, details of initial entry into service, three chapters covering the F-82’s service in the Korean War, and a final chapter detailing the type’s removal from the Korean War Theatre in February 1952, to see out its operational days in the Alaskan Air Defense Command. “If you’re an historian like me, you’ll love this book. It lists every F-82 to serve in Korea, every crewman lost in combat, every squadron which used them, and all the pertinent tech details about each version. Photos illustrate the planes from nearly every squadron (if not all) and captions offer in-depth information not included in the text—so they really add value.”—My Hobby Info

Used primarily as a long-range bomber escort in raids over Germany, the North American P-51 Mustang earned a reputation for toughness and agility in dogfights. Carrying a two-stage supercharged V-12 Merlin engine and armed with six .50 caliber machine guns, the P-51 helped the Allies gain air superiority in the skies over Europe. P-51s were flown by the famed Tuskegee Airmen, and remained in service during the Korean War. World airforces made extensive use of the Mustang, some into the 1980's. Republic F-105 Thunderchief Pilot's Flight Operating Instructions by United States Air Force,USAF Pdf

Known as the ¿Thud¿, Republic¿s F-105 Thunderchief entered service in 1958, and flew in a variety of roles through 1984. The largest single-engine fighter in the U.S.A.F. inventory, the F-105 could exceed Mach 1.0 at sea level, and achieve Mach 2.0 at high altitude. It could carry up to 14,000 pounds of ordnance, or about as much as most WWII heavy bombers. The F-105 served as the primary strike aircraft in the early years of the Vietnam conflict, and its pilots flew over 20,000 missions. These included ¿wild weasel¿ flights intended to suppress North Vietnamese air defenses. The dangerous aspects of these missions help account for the aircraft¿s high loss rate ¿ out of 833 F-105s produced, 320 were lost in combat in S.E. Asia. Originally printed by the U.S. Air Force, this handbook provides a fascinating glimpse inside the cockpit of one of history¿s great planes. Classified ¿Restricted¿, the manual was declassified and is here reprinted in book form.

North American F-86 Sabre Pilot's Flight Operating Instructions by United States Air Force Pdf

Built as both a fighter-interceptor and fighter-bomber, the F-86 Sabre (sometimes called the Sabrejet) was one of the most widely-produced fighters of the Cold War. In December of 1950, three squadrons of Sabres were rushed into combat in Korea, where they dueled North Korean, Chinese and Russian pilots flying the MiG-15. By the time the war was over, F-86 pilots achieved a stunning victory ratio - destroying nearly 800 enemy aircraft with a loss of only 76 Sabres. The nimble jet also saw combat in the Taiwan Straight Crisis and the Indo-Pakistan Wars of 1965 and 1971. Originally printed by North American and the U.S. Air Force, this F-86E flight operating manual taught pilots everything they needed to know before entering the cockpit. Classified "Restricted," the manual was recently declassified and is here reprinted in book form. This facsimile has been reformatted and color images appear in black and white. Hughes XF-11 Pilot's Flight Operating Instructions by U.S. Army Air Force Pdf

The XF-11 was originally conceived as a dedicated reconnaissance aircraft, capable of high-speed penetration of enemy defenses. The plane's design benefited from research work by its builder, the brilliant and sometimes mercurial Howard Hughes. Inspired by an experimental aircraft he had created known as the DX-2, Hughes' XF-11 was a twin-engine, twin-boom, tricycle gear monoplane that featured a pressurized nacelle for its crew and 28-cylinder engines with contra-rotating props. Hughes piloted the XF-11 on its maiden flight, and was nearly killed when one of the props reversed pitch, and the plane crashed. Hughes recovered and piloted a second prototype, this one outfitted with conventional props, but the Air Force had already made up its mind: the XF-11 would never enter service. Originally printed by Hughes and the Air Force this handbook provides a fascinating glimpse inside the cockpit of this plane. This manual is declassified.

Fighter Pilot's Heaven by Donald S. Lopez, Sr. Pdf

Fighter Pilot's Heaven presents the dramatic inside story of the American military's transition into the jet age, as told by a flyer whose life depended on its success. With colorful anecdotes about fellow pilots as well as precise technical information, Donald S. Lopez describes how it was to be “behind the stick” as a test pilot from 1945 to 1950, when the U.S. military was shifting from war to peacetime operations and from propeller to jet aircraft. An ace pilot who had served with Gen. Claire Chennault's Flying Tiger Fighter Group, Lopez was assigned at the close of World War II to the elite Proof Test Group of the Air Proving Ground Command. Located at Eglin Field (later Eglin Air Force Base) in Florida, the group determined the operational suitability of Air Force weapons systems and aircraft and tested the first operational jet, the P-80 Shooting Star. Jet fighters required new techniques, tactics, and weaponry. Lopez recounts historic test flights in the P-59, P-80, and P-84, among other planes, describing complex combat maneuvers, hair-raising landings in unusual positions, and disastrous crashes and near crashes. This memoir is peppered with lively accounts of many pilots and their colleagues, revealing how airmen coped with both exhilarating successes and sometimes tragic failures.
