Fairy Tales of Old Germany by Crispin Ridge (Translator) Pdf

The Sultans Daughter is the story of a nobleman who goes off on the Crusades, but gets captured by the Saracens. After a while in prison, he is put in charge of creating a new garden for the Sultan. Here he encounters Melechsala, and after some misunderstanding, they fall for each other. There are lots of complications, not least the fact that he is already happily married. Not strictly a fairy-story, as no magic is involved, unless one counts prophetic dreams. Th stolen veil tells of part-fairy maidens who turn into swans to fly to a magic lake to renew their youth. An enterprising youth falls in love at first sight of one, and steals her magic veil, which she needs to turn back into a swan and fly home. Th Treasure-Seeker is a master-chef who has a string of bad luck, as well as a shrewish wife, until he overhears an old shepherd tell a tale about some hidden treasure, and determines to go and find it for himself. Includes a strange bird and a magic root.

Clever Maids by Valerie Paradiz Pdf

The famous fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm - stories like Snow White , Red Riding Hood , and Rumplestiltskin - are know to millions of people around the world and are deeply embedded in the collective psyche. In this charming account, writer and scholar Valerie Paradiz reveals the true story of how the fairy tales came to be. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, collectors and editors of more than 200 folk stories, were major German intellects of the nineteenth century, contemporaries of Goethe and Schiller. But as Paradiz reveals here, the romantic image of the two brothers traveling the countryside, transcribing tales told to them by peasants, is a far cry from the truth. In fact, more than half the fairy tales the Grimm brothers collected were actually contributed by their educated female friends from the bourgeois and aristocratic classes. While German folkloric scholars-all of them male-fancied themselves the keepers of the cultural flame, it was a handful of women who ensured that millions would know the stories of Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella by heart. Set against the backdrop of the chaotic Napoleonic wars and the years of high German romanticism, Clever Maids chronicles one of the most fascinating literary collaborations in European history and brilliantly captures the intellectual spirit of the men and women of the age. Even more, it illuminates the ways in which the Grimm tales, with their mythic portrayals of courage, sacrifice, and betrayal, still speak so powerfully to us today.

"Libussa" is astory which starts with a tree-elf who persuades a mortal to protect her oak tree from being cut down. They eventually marry and have three daughters, one of whom is the Libussa of the title. Although only half an elf, she stll has powerful magic, and the story tells how she uses it. "Ulrich with the Hump" involves a hen which lays golden eggs and an Italian enchantress, as well as a young mans devotion to his lady-love. Fairy Tales from the German Forests by Margaret Arndt Pdf

Author Margaret Heaton published her German fairy tales under Margaret Arndt or Frau Arndt. Historians don't have much information about her life, but we know she was of English descent and married to a German named Paul Arndt. Her cousin was the wife of English novelist G.K. Chesterton. Not only did Chesterton write the introduction to her work, he also illustrated the cover of her collection of German fairy tales, Fairy Tales from the German Forests. The book was published around 1913, and features an interesting selection of imaginative fairy tales from Germany with deep conversations, unlike the Grimm Brothers' style of German fairy tales. Some historians and fairy tale experts have likened this collection to a Victorian style of writing.
