Shenandoah Religion by Stephen L. Longenecker Pdf

By surveying the religiously pluralistic setting of the eighteenth and early-nineteenth-century Shenandoah Valley, Longenecker reveals how the fabric of American pluralism was woven. Calling worldliness the "mainstream" and otherworldliness, "outsidernesss," Shenandoah Religion describes the transition certain denominations made in becoming mainstream and the resistance of others in maintaining distinctive dress, manners, social relations, economics, and apolitical viewpoints.

Troubled by Faith by Owen Davies Pdf

The nineteenth century was a time of extraordinary scientific innovation, but with the rise of psychiatry, faiths and popular beliefs were often seen as signs of a diseased mind. By exploring the beliefs of asylum patients, we see the nineteenth century in a new light, with science, faith, and the supernatural deeply entangled in a fast-changing world. The birth of psychiatry in the early nineteenth-century fundamentally changed how madness was categorised and understood. A century on, their conceptions of mental illness continue to influence our views today. Beliefs and behaviour were divided up into the pathological and the healthy. The influence of religion and the supernatural became significant measures of insanity in individuals, countries, and cultures. Psychiatrists not only thought they could transform society in the industrial age but also explain the many strange beliefs expressed in the distant past. Troubled by Faith explores these ideas about the supernatural across society through the prism of medical history. It is a story of how people continued to make sense of the world in supernatural terms, and how belief came to be a medical issue. This cannot be done without exploring the lives of those who found themselves in asylums because of their belief in ghosts, witches, angels, devils, and fairies, or because they though themselves in divine communication, or were haunted by modern technology. The beliefs expressed by asylum patients were not just an expression of their individual mental health, but also provide a unique reflection of society at the time - a world still steeped in the ideas and imagery of folklore and faith in a fast-changing world.

The Perfect Religion, A Beacon to the True Kingdom of God by Phillip Cimei Pdf

Is there such a thing as a perfect religion? If so, then why are there over 34,000 branches of the Christian faith? If there is one true body of believers, why do some feel like the following: - I need to wander around from church to church because I'm not satisfied - I'm afraid if I make a mistake I'm hell bound - I'm stuck in a lukewarm church with members who are satisfied with a mediocre religious life - I'm tired of that one doctrinal point that defines my church and excludes other Christians - I'm not sure if what the preacher is teaching is correct, but I'm afraid to buck the system The author, having embraced all of these distressing feelings, takes the reader on an unprecedented treasure hunt to find that illusive perfect religion. And after fifty years of digging, he might have hit the mother lode""the Sermon on the Mount. Will it satisfy those still searching for the truth? Will it reaffirm the faith of those who have found the treasure? Will this truth set those shackled to a confused state free? The author addresses the problem head on. He weaves through the maze of controversy, theological mumbo jumbo, and religious opinions to give answers to why there is so much division in the church, and why so many wandering souls are searching, if not in their heart, from church to church. He uses captivating illustrations""a girl with a moose, a boy ravaged with a flesh-eating disease, and a vulture eyeballing a starving child""to bring to life Christ's quest to show those wandering souls the way. Are you brave enough to take the journey? "Will I truly find God?" you ask. "I love those who love Me and those who seek Me diligently will find Me" (Prov. 8:17).
