FAO/WHO Expert Meeting on the Application of Nanotechnologies in the Food and Agriculture Sectors by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Pdf

"The advent of nanotechnology has unleashed enormous prospects for the development of new products and applications for a wide range of industrial and consumer sectors. The new technological developments have already opened up a multibillion dollar industry in recent years, the global market impact of which is expected to reach US$1 trillion by 2015, with around 2 million workers. While the majority of manufacturing and use of nanoscale materials occurs in the United States, the European Union, with its around 30 percent global share of the sector, is not lagging far behind in this field. Like other sectors, nanotechnology promises to revolutionize the whole food chain--from production to processing, storage, and development of innovative materials, products and applications. Although the potential applications of nanotechnology are wide ranging, the current applications in the food and agricultural sectors are relatively few, because the science is still newly emergent. An overview of more than 800 nanotechnology-based consumer products that are currently available worldwide, suggests that only around 10 percent of these are foods, beverages and food packaging products. However, nanotechnology-derived products and applications in these sectors have been steadily increasing in recent years, and are predicted to grow rapidly in the future. This is because the new technologies have a great potential to address many of the industry's current needs." -' P. 3

The EU and Nanotechnologies by Tanja Ehnert Pdf

This book investigates the role of law in confronting major societal transformations embodied by the emergence of nanotechnologies. Taking the case of the European Union, it explores who the key decision-makers in the regulation of nanotechnologies are and how they take decisions. The questions are explored through two distinct case studies: the food and chemicals sectors. The book charts an incremental retreat of the European Union to its executive powers, including 'soft law' measures such as agencies' guidelines or implementing measures. This, the author argues, results in the Union's fundamental democratic control mechanisms, the EU legislature and the Court of Justice of the EU, being circumvented. The book recommends several immediate proposals to reform EU risk regulation, advocating a greater reliance on the European Parliament and outlining measures to increase the transparency of guidance drafting by EU agencies. This important work provides a timely examination of how emerging technologies pose both regulatory and democratic challenges.

Human Rights and Emerging Technologies by Daniele Ruggiu Pdf

What is the state of current European governance on new and emerging technologies, and where is it going? What is, and what can be, the role of human rights in governance arrangements? These are the main questions that this book answers for both European and non-European scholars. It provides a wide picture of current European governance, notably in biotechnology, nanotechnology and synthetic biology, and discusses the model of Responsible Research and Innovation, which is gaining popularity within the European Union, under a human rights perspective. It shows how human rights can contribute to governance frameworks without posing obstacles to research and innovation. The theory presented in the book is followed by practical guidelines drawn from human rights law. Starting from the Strasbourg Court jurisprudence, it provides a complete review of the wide range of rights that the European Convention on Human Rights protects in light of the challenges of techno-scientific advances. This analysis will come in handy for private actors, policymakers, regulators, as well as judges in solving hard cases raised by techno-scientific progress in the future.

Biocatalysis and Agricultural Biotechnology: Fundamentals, Advances, and Practices for a Greener Future by Anjali Priyadarshini,Prerna Pandey Pdf

This new volume, Biocatalysis and Agricultural Biotechnology: Fundamentals, Advances, and Practices for a Greener Future, looks at the application of a variety of technologies, both fundamental and advanced, that are being used for crop improvement, metabolic engineering, and the development of transgenic plants. The science of agriculture is among the oldest and most intensely studied by mankind. Human intervention has led to manipulation of plant gene structure for the use of plants for the production of bioenergy, food, textiles, among other industrial uses. A sound knowledge of enzymology as well as the various biosynthetic pathways is required to further utilize microbes as sources to provide the desired products for industrial utility. This volume provides an overview of all these aspects along with an updated review of the major plant biotechnology procedures and techniques, their impact on novel agricultural development, and crop plant improvement. Also discussed are the use of "white biotechnology" and "metabolic engineering" as prerequisites for a sustainable development. The importance of patenting of plant products, world food safety, and the role of several imminent organizations is also discussed. The volume provides an holistic view that makes it a valuable source of information for researchers of agriculture and biotechnology as well as agricultural engineers, environmental biologists, environmental engineers, and environmentalists. Short exercises at the end of the chapters help to make the book suitable for course work in agriculture biotechnology, genetics, biology, biotechnology, and plant science.

The future of food and agriculture: Trends and challenges by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Pdf

How can we achieve FAO’s original vision of a world free from hunger and malnutrition? The report sheds some light on the nature of the challenges that agriculture and food systems are facing now and throughout the 21st century, and provides some insights as to what is at stake and what needs to be done. What emerges is that “business as usual” is no longer an option but calls for major transformations in agricultural systems, in rural economies and in how we manage our natural resources. The report was undertaken for the quadrennial review of the FAO Strategic Framework and in preparation for the Organization’s Medium-Term Plan 2018-2021.

Encapsulation in Food Processing and Fermentation by Steva Lević,Viktor Nedović,Branko Bugarski Pdf

Food technology has adopted new principles and practices that are rapidly changing the food sector. New foods are now available under more uniform standards and better quality control. Globalised food market offers opportunities for manufacturers to increase production and profit, and at the same time, consumers benefit from the choice of food products like never before. All this is possible only because of the innovations in the food sector. One of such innovations is encapsulation technology, which aims to preserve food quality, enhance the sensorial properties of food and increase the efficiency in food processing. This book discusses the uses of encapsulation technology in food practices and conventional processes and also highlights new directions in food processing. In the introductory chapters’ review of encapsulation technologies, carrier materials and criteria for their selection, analytical methods for characterisation of encapsulated products and some aspects of product design and process optimisation. The most important achievements of encapsulation technology in the food sector are reviewed in the later chapters related to encapsulation of food ingredients, food biocatalysts and examples of usage of encapsulated active ingredients in the dairy and meat industry, beverage production, etc. In addition, the implementation of nanotechnology in the food sector is reviewed, emphasizing the most important materials and technologies for the production of nanoencapsulates. The book is a valuable source of information on encapsulation technology, for academia and industry, especially the food sector, with the aim of enhancing knowledge transfer.
