Fearing the Black Body by Sabrina Strings Pdf

Winner, 2020 Body and Embodiment Best Publication Award, given by the American Sociological Association Honorable Mention, 2020 Sociology of Sex and Gender Distinguished Book Award, given by the American Sociological Association How the female body has been racialized for over two hundred years There is an obesity epidemic in this country and poor black women are particularly stigmatized as “diseased” and a burden on the public health care system. This is only the most recent incarnation of the fear of fat black women, which Sabrina Strings shows took root more than two hundred years ago. Strings weaves together an eye-opening historical narrative ranging from the Renaissance to the current moment, analyzing important works of art, newspaper and magazine articles, and scientific literature and medical journals—where fat bodies were once praised—showing that fat phobia, as it relates to black women, did not originate with medical findings, but with the Enlightenment era belief that fatness was evidence of “savagery” and racial inferiority. The author argues that the contemporary ideal of slenderness is, at its very core, racialized and racist. Indeed, it was not until the early twentieth century, when racialized attitudes against fatness were already entrenched in the culture, that the medical establishment began its crusade against obesity. An important and original work, Fearing the Black Body argues convincingly that fat phobia isn’t about health at all, but rather a means of using the body to validate race, class, and gender prejudice.

Hung by Scott Poulson-Bryant Pdf

A brilliant look at the pervasive belief that African American men are prodigiously endowed, from the author’s own experiences to sharp analysis of how black male sexuality is expressed in art, literature, media, sports, and pornography “Scott really goes there, talking honestly and telling secrets about the black phallus and its, uh, massive impact on America.” —Touré “Hung” is a double entendre, referring not only to penis size but to the fact that black men were once literally hung from trees, often for their perceived sexual prowess and the supposed risk it posed to white women. As a poignant reminder, Scott Poulson-Bryant begins his book with a letter to Emmett Till, the teenager who was lynched in Mississippi in the mid-1950s for whistling at a white woman. For Poulson-Bryant and other men of his generation, society’s deep-seated obsession with the sexual powers of black men has had an enormous, if often deceptive, influence on how they perceive themselves and on the assumptions made by others. His tales of his sexual encounters with both sexes, along with anecdotes about the lives of various friends and colleagues, are wryly and at times shockingly revealing. Enduring racial perceptions have shaped popular culture as well, and Poulson-Bryant offers a thorough, thought-provoking look at media-created images of the “Well-Hung Black Male.” He deftly deconstructs movies like Mandingo and Shaft, articles in the popular press, and edgy works like Robert Mapplethorpe’s Black Book, while also providing distinctive profiles of icons like porn star Lexington Steele and rapper L.L. Cool J. A mixture of memoir and cultural commentary, Hung is the first book to take on phallic fixation and uncover what lies below.

Fat White Women and the Black Men That Love Them Vol 2 by Gareth Mayers Pdf

When considering the issue of interracial relationships there still seems to exist a lot of negative opinions. After careful consideration of the outpouring of hate and vitriol found on youtube and other social media websites, there seems to be various arguments that keep coming up to explain interracial relationships in a negative light. These various arguments usually have their main support groups. For example a number of white males say that "black men are only taking out white man's trash," or black females will say "he can't handle a real woman so he is going for these highly domesticated easy white women." (I've heard this one uttered in person) and while this may seem like just the ravings of a mindless racist troll, or an idiot ratchet chick, look closer at what they are saying and you begin to realize that a lot of people share some of the same strong deep seated belief in both white and black communities. We only need to think a little to see what belief in this theory can lead to; black women who internalize this would in effect be believing that black men view them as worse than trash, black men who share this view may look over potential partners out of fear, or shame. White women that have this view may settle for substandard men; thinking that they can't get a man of quality, and well, white men may suffer most of all in many an unforeseen way. In the first book we will discuss these issues mainly as they pertain to the white male then in the second we move on to the black female, finishing off in the third by addressing black men and white women. In doing this we are trying to give a different perspective to each viewpoint held, to offer a different perspective on the subject. But not in some boring scholarly talk with stats and graphs or hifalutin words but in a very simple down to earth way with a fresh comedic and entertaining story, that weaves all the points and counterpoints throughout leaving you, the reader to come to your own conclusions at the end. These books, while meant for you to have a great conversation piece or heavy thinking material are first and foremost supposed to be funny and entertaining, so take a load off - don't get stressed, we just going to have a good laugh at ourselves. So to the PC police leave the guns at the door or don't come in because we are definitely going to offend a lot of people here today but we don't care. This series of books was created hoping to answer questions posed by many people regarding interracial relationship between white women and black men. It focuses on women that are a little heavier than the average. This first book of the series addresses the assertion put out by a lot of white males, that say black men are taking our left-over trash. It hopes to shine a light on this statement with a story that may be considered offensive by some, but I'll let you be the judge of that. What is certain is that it is an entertaining, light, fun, and easy read. If you found that it did not offend you and you enjoyed it, then you should check out the rest of the series. This story shines a light on the statement black women make went they say, that "black men can't handle a real woman, so they pick up docile white women". Again, this series may be offensive to some so please be warned! This story shines a light on the reality of interracial relationships, trying to show that when it comes to love skin color alone is not everything.

They Always Said I Would Marry a White Girl by Robert M. Moore (III.) Pdf

Growing up in a Philadelphia suburb in the 1960s, there were instances when I was quite reluctant to point out to my classmates, who were all White, that I was indeed African American. There was an impenetrable boundary between African Americans and Whites. To be something else other than White meant to attract unwanted and unneeded attention. Sometimes I felt I harbored a secret, a mark, or stain, one that my friends and I just didn't discuss. I do not remember intentionally trying to deny who I am, but I am sure there were instances when I just didn't speak up with a loud voice. The pressure to somehow join the majority was intense and painful. Robert Moore, whose African American identity today may be questioned by some because of his very light skin color, grew up in an all-white suburb of Philadelphia in the 1960s when the push to assimilate was blatant. An examination of the life experiences of people sometimes felt to be at the perimeter serves to point out that the racial categories of White and Black in America remain strong and impenetrable. The book spans nearly fifty years beginning in the author's youth to a contemporary period when he is a sociology teacher in a university classroom. Book jacket.

Fattily Ever After by Stephanie Yeboah Pdf

‘I love Stephanie… She’s one of my favourite truth tellers online, she pulls no punches and empowers so many women with her own commitment to equality... This book is going to mean a lot, to a lot of people.’ – Jameela Jamil Stephanie Yeboah has experienced racism and fat-phobia throughout her life. From being bullied at school to being objectified and humiliated in her dating life, Stephanie’s response to discrimination has always been to change the narrative around body-image and what we see as beautiful. In her debut book, Fattily Ever After, Stephanie speaks openly and courageously about her own experience on navigating life as a black, plus-sized woman – telling it how it really is – and how she has managed to find self-acceptance in a world where judgement and discrimination are rife. Featuring stories of every day misogynoir and being fetishized, to navigating the cesspit of online dating and experiencing loneliness, Stephanie shares her thoughts on the treatment of black women throughout history, the marginalisation of black, plus-sized women in the media (even within the body-positivity movement) whilst drawing on wisdom from other black fat liberation champions along the way. Peppered with insightful tips and honest advice and boldly illustrated throughout, this inspiring and powerful book is essential reading for a generation of black, plus-sized women, helping them to live their life openly, unapologetically and with confidence.
