Ferns and Fern Allies of Canada by William Cody,Donald Britton Pdf

Ferns and Fern Allies of Canada, first published in 1989, is a comprehensive, illustrated guide for identifying all the species of ferns and fern allies known to occur in Canada. Each species is described, with information on its appearance, diagnostic features, habitat, and range; 159 maps illustrate known distributions across Canada. Keys are provided to each genus and species. An extensive glossary, list of references and index are also included. This new reprint edition includes all the original text in a slightly smaller field guide format and illustrations have been enlarged for improved usefulness. Although slightly dated in terms of family assignments of some species, the overall nomenclature for the book's genera and species remains very similar to that in popular usage today, making Ferns and Fern Allies of Canada an excellent reference and field guide for anyone studying ferns in North America. About the Authors: William J. Cody (1922-2009) was one of Canada's leading botanists and author of more than 340 articles, papers, and books, including Flora of the Yukon Territory. Cody worked for the Canadian Department of Agriculture for 41 years, before retiring in 1987. Donald M. Britton (1923-2012) was considered one of the preeminent fern specialists in North America, and spent most of his long career at the University of Guelph, Dept. of Botany and Genetics.

Budd's Flora of the Canadian Prairie Provinces by A. Budd Pdf

Budd's Flora of the Prairie Provinces, first published in 1979 and revised and updated in 1987, is a field-oriented manual for the identification of all known plants occurring in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Volume 1 includes the region's ferns and fern allies, conifers, and monocots (e.g., grasses, sedges and rushes, lilies, orchids, etc.) The companion Volume 2 treats the dicots ("wildflowers"; see ISBN 1523348690). Each family, genus and species is keyed, followed by concise descriptions of each species' key features, habitat and general range in the region. Numerous line drawings by the authors and b/w photographs of herbarium specimens are included throughout the text. Although somewhat dated in terms of taxonomic nomenclature, the book's thoroughness (1,974 species in 590 genera and 118 families are described in the two volumes), easy-to-use keys, and clear descriptions make Budd's Flora a valuable resource for anyone studying the plant life of the region's prairies, wetlands, forests, and mountains. Primary author A. C. Budd (1889-1960) was a long-time student of Canada's prairie flora and Range Botanist with Agriculture Canada. This latest edition was updated by his colleagues J. Looman and K. F. Best.

The Fern Flora of Canada by George Lawson Pdf

Excerpt from The Fern Flora of Canada: Descriptions of All the Native Ferns of the Dominion, With Localities Where They Grow European plant, as seen in Botanic Gardens, having apparently a more elongated and elevated corm than ours), yet this corm differs from the true aerial stem of tree ferns, not only in its partially subterranean character, slight elongation, and limited endurance. But also in sending forth radiating horizontal runners, ending in buds or young corms, which become new plants, thus giving a lateral mode of propagation or increase. We have no true tree ferns in Canada to Whose stems the term caudex can be properly applied, and in describing our Ferns this part is called the Rhizome.
