Effects of Intensive Fertilizer Use on the Human Environment by Anonim Pdf

A number of countries in Europe and North America have been using fertilizers heavily for a number of years and particulary since 1945. This high level of fertilizer applications is essential to supply the necessary food for increasing populations and to meet higher demands for animal and plant products. Effects of fertilizer use on the environment should show first in countries where fertilizers have been used intensively for some time and where consumption is steadily rising. It is the experience gained in such countries which is being discussed below with a view to assessing the impact of fertilizers on the human environment, including the development of methods for recognizing and minimizing any undersirable consequences which may be produced. It should be realized that high densities of human population combined with intensive crop and livestock production have led to the production of organic wastes at a rate too high for natural processes to convert it in ecologically safe compounds. Therefore both direct and indirect effects of intensive fertilizer use have been reviewed.

The objective is to explore the future need for fertilizer required to support the Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) projections of agricultural commodity production for 2015 and 2030. The paper begins by briefly reviewing attempts to identify and quantify the factors influencing the growth in demand and supply for agricultural commodities. Several studies that estimate long-term fertlizer use are also reviewed, followed by a discussion of the forecasting methods and data. The results and implications conclude the paper. The study projects growth rates of between 0.7 and 1.3 per cent, depending on assumptions about nutrient efficiency over the next 35 years

This study investigates the impact of contract farming (CF) in baby corn production on yield, irrigation costs, fertilizer costs and usage of chemical fertilizer. We find that adoption of CF by baby corn smallholders, after controlling for characteristics of both control and treatment groups, leads to higher yields and lower spending on fertilizers and irrigation. Additionally, CF in baby corn farming leads to a reduction in the use of chemical fertilizers (Urea and DAP). Thus, CF intervention benefits the livelihood of smallholders, reduces environmental degradation and reduces stress on groundwater without compromising yield.
