Fifty Years in Journalism by Beman Brockway Pdf

Excerpt from Fifty Years in Journalism: Embracing Recollections and Personal Experiences, With an Autobiography The following articles have appeared in the Times and Reformer at intervals during the past seven years, under the heading, "Rummaging in the Past." They are now published in this form to oblige those who have requested that this be done. Some expressions may be found which seem out of place in a book; but if it be borne in mind that the articles were written for the columns of a daily newspaper, with no idea at the time of writing of publishing them in other form, all seemingly out of place matter will be accounted for. It should further be stated that, owing to the failure of his eyesight, the writer has been unable to read the proof sheets. For that reason, he desires the reader to overlook typographical and other unimportant errors that may have crept into the volume. He has simply labored to be right in the statement of facts. Fifty Years of Irish Journalism, 1911 (Classic Reprint) by Andrew Dunlop Pdf

Excerpt from Fifty Years of Irish Journalism, 1911 A portion of the following pages was written during the nine months - excepting the brief vacation intervals - which I spent at the Parnell Commission in London. The Court sat four days each week, some times only three, and this gave me a good deal of spare time which I utilised in writing portions of these reminiscences. People in every part of Ireland have repeatedly said to me Why don't you write your reminiscences My answer, speaking generally, for the last twenty years, has been that I had not time. Recently, however, I have had occasional short periods of leisure in which I have been enabled to complete my self-imposed task. I am well aware that the narrative is very much of a personal nature, but possibly it may prove of some interest as a picture of journalistic life in Ireland during the troublous times to which it relates.x11 fifty years OF irish journalism. This work makes no pretension to being a history of the period which it covers. A very fair idea of that history might, I think, be gathered from the newspapers of the time, and possibly, for the period from 1867 to 1889 during which I was correspondent, and, frequently, the special correspondent of The Daily News, that journal may be found to contain as good a summary as exists. I know that I was the most energetic of all the Irish correspondents of the London papers during those years. I have not attempted to adhere to chronological order, which I consider would not have been suitable for the general plan of the work. Then and Now, Or Fifty Years of Newspaper Work by William Hunt Pdf

Excerpt from Then and Now, or Fifty Years of Newspaper Work: With an Appendix Writing as I have done from recollection. And not from records, it will be noticed that I have not followed strictly the order of time, but have frequently allowed an event to introduce another of a similar or kindred character, although happening at a distance of some years. Sometimes I have gone along with the current of time, and at other times I have been in uenced more by the relation of subject than by proximity of time. Any disadvantage arising from this method of procedure will I hope be minimised by the Index. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Fifty Years of Newspaper Life, 1845-1895 by Alexander Sinclair Pdf

Excerpt from Fifty Years of Newspaper Life, 1845-1895: Being Chiefly Reminiscences of That Time Glasgow Branch of the British Typographia, a Society of Compositors who have the laudable ambition of making their workmanship in typography more perfect and beautiful. They asked me to occupy an evening with them in their Course of Lectures; and as the series was meant to be of a practical or informing nature, it was arranged that I should say something on the subject of Newspaper Life, with which I have been in touch during my 50 years' connection with the Glasgow Herald. Several of those who heard the Address, and other friends who heard of it, urged that it should be printed; but it seemed to me that if it could interest friends enough to give it such a distinction the subject was entitled to more deliberate and fuller treatment. I therefore venture to deal with it in a more comprehensive form and with kindred material, in the hope that it may form a Slight record of the important transition period from long enthralment to the boundless freedom now enjoyed by what has been called the Fourth Estate of the Realm. AS the reminiscences, &c., also are almost all from a Publisher's standpoint, they may supply to some extent matter not contained in Books on Newspapers. Fifty Years of a Londoner's Life (Classic Reprint) by H. G. Hibbert Pdf

Excerpt from Fifty Years of a Londoner's Life If this book and its author make the same appeal to the public as they do to me, then this certainly will be one of the books of the year. As to the author, I have known him for nearly a quarter of a century; he was once my colleague, and a more energetic, competent, trained journalist I have never met, nor a more loyal and steadfast friend. His book is an epitome of the side of journalistic work to which he has devoted most of his professional life - though not all, for Mr Hibbert belongs to the same old-fashioned school of journalists as myself, who had to go through the severe mill, and to turn their hands to everything that turned up, from an execution to a grand opera. But the subject that has attracted his attention more than any other is the stage. For many years he spent some hours of every night of the year in some form or other of a theatre or a music hall; I believe he is one of the men who would prefer, if stranded in a small town, going to a penny gaff rather than remain amid the futile gossip of a smoke-room. This passion for the play is due to an inexhaustible interest in the many forms of art which the stage presents, and to an equally inexhaustible interest in the multiform and often thrilling drama that goes on within a play - namely, the men and women behind the scenes.
