Pleistocene Amphibians and Reptiles in Britain and Europe by J. Alan Holman Pdf

The Pleistocene epoch or Ice Age, an extended period of advancing and retreating ice sheets, is characterized by striking climatic oscillations and sea level fluctuations. This age saw the rise and spread of humans and a great extinction of large mammals by the end of the epoch; in fact, the world today is essentially the product of dramatic changes that took place in the Pleistocene. This book, a companion to the author's Pleistocene Amphibians and Reptiles in North America, discusses the Pleistocene amphibians and reptiles in Britain and the European continent eastward through present-day Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the Yugoslavian republics, and Greece. The book begins with a general discussion of the Pleistocene in Britain and Europe with an emphasis on regional terms used to define Pleistocene chronological events. Next, a look at the pre-Pleistocene herpetofauna of the study area sets the stage for a discussion of Pleistocene herpetofauna. A significant section of the book consists of a "bestiary," a series of annotated taxonomic accounts of Pleistocene herpetological taxa from the region. Following this is the interpretive section, beginning with a discussion of herpetological species as paleoenvironmental indicators and continuing with an analysis of herpetological population adjustments to Pleistocene events in Britain and Europe, and then with a discussion of extinction patterns in the region. Finally, the author compares Pleistocene herpetological events in Europe with those in North America. This volume and its companion together provide an up-to-date and comprehensive review of Pleistocene herpetofaunas across a significant portion of the Northern Hemisphere.

Central and Eastern European Wildlife by Gerard Gorman Pdf

The wildlife of eastern Europe is one of the unexpected attractions of a region best known for its cultural assets: relatively few visitors are aware of the diversity on their holiday doorstep, from brown bears and wolves to numerous birds no longer common in the west of the continent. Accessible and beautifully illustrated, the guide will appeal both to the holidaymaker and to the serious naturalist seeking a compact volume to carry around. And after the trip, it will also make an attractive souvenir. The guide covers the wildlife of: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Kaliningrad, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Bosnia & Herzegovina.Bradt's fully illustrated wildlife guides focus on regions of the world particularly celebrated for their amazing and often unique species. With spectacular photography or exclusive watercolour drawings throughout, each visitors' guide provides an introduction to the region's principal flora and fauna alongside suggested wildlife itineraries, practical information on when to go and what to take and photography tips. Written in a deliberately engaging way, they offer something different from dry field guides, and will appeal to the interested layman as much as the wildlife devotee. Ideal as a lightweight companion to any wildlife trip they also make a handsome souvenir.

Slimy Salamanders by Meish Goldish Pdf

Why are salamanders so slimy? These amphibians need to stay moist so they can breathe through their skin! If their skin ever dried out, the salamander would stop breathing and die. Slime helps salamanders survive in other ways, too. It keeps them safe from hungry enemies. The slime on a salamander's skin tastes bad and is often poisonous. Some people may think their slimy coating is gross, but it has helped salamanders survive on Earth since the time of the dinosaurs! In Slimy Salamanders, large color photos and fascinating facts will captivate readers as they discover what these water-loving creatures eat, how they stay safe, and the tremendous transformations that take place as these amphibians grow from tiny eggs to full-fledged adults.
