School Arithmetic by John M. Colaw Pdf

Excerpt from School Arithmetic: First Book Tms book is intended to cover the work usually given in the first four school years. Part One should be used by the teacher as the basis of oral work suitable for beginners. This work may be repeated as a review after the book has been placed in the hands of the pupil. Part Two covers the work of the third year; Part Three that of the fourth year. A primary consideration in the selection of the subject mat ter and in the method of presentation has been the child him self - his interests, his needs, and his capabilities. Constant effort has been made to bring the entire subject into close touch with child life. The course as a whole proceeds by carefully graded steps to develop in the pupil of the primary grades not only accuracy and reasonable speed in computations but also the power to interpret and solve such problems as come within the range of his experience. The Natural Arithmetic by Zalmon Richards Pdf

Excerpt from The Natural Arithmetic: Specially Prepared for Elementary Schools The Natural Arithmetic has been prepared to meet a demand which has grown out of the experience of live, progressive teachers during the last ten years. Many educators have learned that a large part of the matter in common arithmetics is of no practical use to nine tenths of the children in our elementary schools; and that the fundamental principles involved in the use of numbers are few but that they are enshrouded in many blind and useless rules. At least one half of the time usually spent in studying arithmetic is wasted in memorizing rules and processes, and in unraveling mysteries which yield no profit even when solved. The study of arithmetic is required, not only for its practical value, but also because of its supposed disciplinary advantages. First Book in Arithmetic by Frederic A. Adams Pdf

Excerpt from First Book in Arithmetic: Comprising Lessons in Number and Form; For Primary and Common Schools The pupil 13 not conducted hastily from small num bers to large ones. Special care is taken to avoid the danger of calling his attention to numbers which are beyond his mental grasp. There can be little doubt that this apparent slowness of progress will secure the best speed ln the end. Another feature is the distinct and thorough ezhi bitiou of the decimal law of numbers, as seen in the composition of numerical words. The attention given to this point, it is believed, will remove some obstacles usually found in the student's path in his more ad venced studies. A Common School Arithmetic (Classic Reprint) by D. B. Hagar Pdf

Excerpt from A Common School Arithmetic It has been constructed with a View to the most rapid and thorough progress of the pupil by the use of the least number of books possible, and by the greatest economy of time. It combines mental and written exercises in a practical sys tem. All obsolete and valueless material and all merely puzzling problems have been excluded, but no pains have been spared to embody valuable modern methods of computa tion and topics having direct relation to business as it is transacted at the present day. The work is sufficiently comprehensive to render the use of a higher arithmetic quite unnecessary. It is ample enough in its range of subjects and exercises to qualify the learner for a skillful and prompt solution of all ordinary problems of a commercial character, and at the same time to subserve the purposes of mental discipline. First Days in Number by Della Vanamburgh Pdf

Excerpt from First Days in Number: A Primer of Arithmetic One of the first essentials in primary education is the ability of the pupil to talk without restraint and in good language. To correlate this phase of development with number work lends interest to the lesson, inspires self-confidence in the pupil, awakens the child mind to the realization of the wonders it is his privilege to explore. Number work is one of the means of the primary teacher by which the natural investigating tendency of the child may be turned into channels where he will make discoveries concerning the truths of nature and the inventions of man. The pictures throughout the book are not in any way designed to take the place of actual objects. Such objects as are attractive and interesting to the pupil are represented. They are familiar to him, and yet they suggest many avenues of study to the skilful teacher. The first few pages are suggestions for conversational work. Objects of life have been chosen because the animal kingdom naturally interests the child mind. Quadruped, biped, bird, fish, and insect are represented. The child is easily led to observe, study, and classify the animals around him. He is interested in observing the many kinds belonging to one class and in studying separately and comparatively their forms, foods, homes, habits, and usefulness. In this work, number appeals incidentally to the mind and little need be said in regard to it. Page 10 represents the inventions of man. The objects suggested should be studied with a purpose of discovering something of their manufacture, the material used, their parts, and their distinctive usefulness. Arithmetic, Designed for Academies and Schools by Charles Davies Pdf

Excerpt from Arithmetic, Designed for Academies and Schools: With Answers The Elementary Treatise, which is here presented, is an enlarged, and it is hoped, an improved 'edition of the Common School Arith metic, published in 1833. The suggestions of several experienced teachers have been incorporated with the body of the work in its new form, and, indeed, nothing has been omitted which it was thought would give it value to those for whose use it is designed. It has been the intention to render the whole subject as plain as it is capable of being made, and at the same time, to treat it as concisely as possible. The name, Compound Numbers, which has heretofore been given to all numbers in which the kind of unit is expressed, has been changed to that of Denominate Numbers. This change has not been made with any ambitious spirit of innovation, but because it is deemed an improvement. It is not easy to form an idea of what is meant by the term, Compound Number, and especially so, when we find it applied to such numbers as 3 pounds, 3 dollars, 3 shillings, doc. Why is 3 pounds a compound number any more than If it be answered that 3 pounds is composed or compounded of three single pounds, that does not remove the difficulty, for 3 is also composed of three units 1. Is it not then the better way to call the first a denominate number, and the other a simple number, as is done in 45. Practical Arithmetic, Or a Complete Exercise-Book by Nathan T. Hilton Pdf

Excerpt from Practical Arithmetic, or a Complete Exercise-Book: For the Use of Schools Books upon the subject of arithmetic have been, of late, very numerous; but whether the subject has been wholly exhausted or not, I leave to be considered. To me it appeared, that there was room for improvement both in matter and form and whether I have affected it, in any degree, must also remain to be considered. The improvement to which I advert, and would be understood chiefly to mean, is in arithmetic as it relates to schools, in which should be comprised all the rules upon that science, expressed in a concise, comprehensive, and methodical manner, with the first example under each, wrought out at large according to the rule, and the rest 'in question and answer. This is the plan which I have prosecuted in the following work. The method, perhaps, may not suit some, though it appeared to me to be the best; however, the rules may be transcribed in any other arrangement at pleasure. The work is large, comprehended in a small compass, and almost entirely new. Being conscious that the following compendium will stand or fall according to its merit or demerit, I therefore, without any recommendation, submit it to the examina tion of an impartial public.
