As interest in the whole science and technology of adhesion and adhesives grows, so do the meetings concerned with it proliferate. In the light of this, it is gratifying that this, the oldest regular meeting in the field, maintains its position by attracting both speakers and audience of such high standard from across the world year after year; further, that we are enabled to reach a wider audience through the publication of the papers presented at the conference in this series of volumes. This present volume, Number 14, differs from its predecessors by the addition of two extra items. Firstly, 1989 marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Adhesion Society of Japan. As part of the celebrations, the Society arranged a mission to Europe which culminated in a Special Anglo-Japanese Symposium on 21 April at The City University, London. We are fortunate in being able to include two of the papers presented by our Japanese visitors. Secondly, on Christmas Day,just as the final work on this volume was being completed, William C. ('Bill') Wake sadly died. We have included an appreciation of his contribution both to these conferences and to the world of adhesion generally. Finally, may I once again express my thanks to all those who have made possible the production of this volume. They are far too numerous to mention individually, including the authors, their secretaries, various members of the staff of the University, and our publishers; to them all, 'Thank you very much'.

This book documents the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Acid-Base Interactions: Relevance to Adhesion Science and Technology held in Newark, New Jersey, October 19--21, 1998. Since the first symposium on this topic was held on the occasion of the 75th birthday of Professor Frederick M. Fowkes in 1990, it was deemed opportune and necessary to hold the second symposium on this topic. This symposium was organized with the following objectives in mind: (i) to consolidate the R&D activity carried out since the first symposium, (ii) to provide a forum for discussion of latest research results, (iii) to provide an opportunity for cross-pollination of ideas, (iv) to identify topics where there was discordance of opinion or discrepancy, and (v) to highlight areas which needed intensified R&D activities. The final technical program contained a total of 36 papers by researchers and technologists from academia, industry and other organizations. This book contains a total of 32 papers, which were rigorously peer reviewed and suitably revised before inclusion in this book. The book is divided into three parts as follows: Part 1: Fundamental Aspects of Acid-Base Interactions; Part 2: Characterization of the Acid-Base Properties of Materials; and Part 3: Applications of Acid-Base Interactions. Over the last decade, or so, the growth in the use of adhesives, especially in ever more technically demanding applications, has been rapid and many major developments in the technology of adhesives have been reported. This growth has also led to attention being focused on somewhat more basic studies of the science of adhesion and adhesives, and in recent years our level of fundamental knowledge concerning the formation and mechanical performance of adhesive joints has increased dramatically. Such studies have, of course, been aided greatly by the development of the tools at the disposal of the investigators. For example, specific surface analytical techniques, such as X-ray photoelectron and secondary-ion mass spectroscopy, and the increasingly sophisticated methods of stress analysis and fracture mechanics have been put to good use in furthering our understanding of the science of adhesion and adhesives. The present book attempts to review the multidisciplined subject of adhesion and adhesives, considering both the science and technology involved in the formation and mechanical performance of adhesive joints. The author would like to thank his friends and colleagues for useful discus sions and help in the preparation of this book. I am particularly grateful to P. Cawley, J. Comyn, W. A. Lees, A. C.
