First Steps in Arithmetic (Classic Reprint) by James Currie Pdf

Excerpt from First Steps in Arithmetic This treatise of Arithmetic is designed to comprise all that is needed by the pupils of common schools, and by those of higher schools till they have completed their elementary education. It is not one of theory, since the instruction of pupils of their standing must be, in the main, practical; nor, on the other hand, is it a mere collection of examples, since the only practical instruction worthy of the name is that which sets the processes before them in a rational way. It aims throughout at that just combination of theory with practice which is the greatest merit of an elementary text-book. The explanations are given concisely, and in the form in which they are likely to be soonest apprehended by the pupil; whilst the exer cises for practice will be found to be very numerous and carefully graduated. First Steps Among Figures by Levi N. Beebe Pdf

Excerpt from First Steps Among Figures: A Drill Book in the Fundamental Rules of Arithmetic In putting this work before the public the author disclaims any ambitious schemes or "great expectations," but he wishes to have the book for the use of his assistant teachers both as to methods and examples. The author has used some parts of it for many years and feels confident that excellent results may be obtained by using it. The aim of the book is to give so much practice as to fix each method in the pupil's mind, rather than to deal with the philosophy of each operation, leaving any teacher who believes that no step should be taken unless the pupil understands the reasoning process by which that step may be reached, to give it in his own way. It is possible that a few who see this book may have found that 7 times 8 are 56 by actual addition, yet those who have never added it may know the fact just as well for all practical purposes. If no one were to eat until he understood how food nourishes the system there would be a deal of hunger in the world. The First Steps in Algebra (Classic Reprint) by George Albert Wentworth Pdf

Excerpt from The First Steps in Algebra It is hoped that young teachers will derive great advantage from studying the systematic arrangement of the algebraic work, for such attention has been paid to this as the limitation of the page would allow. It is of the utmost importance to teach pupils the neatest and most orderly arrangement of work, and to require them to give at the left on each line a statement of the step taken. In this way most of the seeming difficulties of problems vanish. It is also expected that many teachers will find great relief by not being obliged to work out every problem in the Algebra. School Arithmetic by John M. Colaw Pdf

Excerpt from School Arithmetic: First Book Tms book is intended to cover the work usually given in the first four school years. Part One should be used by the teacher as the basis of oral work suitable for beginners. This work may be repeated as a review after the book has been placed in the hands of the pupil. Part Two covers the work of the third year; Part Three that of the fourth year. A primary consideration in the selection of the subject mat ter and in the method of presentation has been the child him self - his interests, his needs, and his capabilities. Constant effort has been made to bring the entire subject into close touch with child life. The course as a whole proceeds by carefully graded steps to develop in the pupil of the primary grades not only accuracy and reasonable speed in computations but also the power to interpret and solve such problems as come within the range of his experience. The First Steps in Number (Classic Reprint) by G. A. Wentworth Pdf

Excerpt from The First Steps in Number The object of this book is to provide teachers with a record of the work done in number in the primary schools of to-day. There has been no attempt at novelty in the subject-matter, in the arrangement of work, or in the manner of presentation. The whole is on a constructive basis. Numbers are chief; processes subordinate. What has been found to be more easily understood precedes the more difficult, without respect to its scientific relation. Fractions present no greater difficulty than wholes, so they accompany the teaching of integral numbers from the beginning. The law of dependence has been carefully observed, although at first glance the arrangement may not seem to warrant this assertion. The object of every teacher is so to present numbers that the mind of the child may grasp firmly the facts concerning them, and hold these facts tenaciously by the law of association. Success lies in requiring the child to show what he is talking about, and in following the "step by step" rule. The book illustrates these two principles. It abounds in examples which have not before appeared in print, and which are calculated to interest the child from their close connection with his varied experiences. It gives suggestions for versatility of drill, and illustrates in detail the teaching of a hundred topics. It is expected that the work to the number ten will be taken in one year, the work to twenty in another year, and the remainder of the courseoutlined in the book will be covered in two years more. A child's book accompanies thisedition, which the child may use with great advantage after he becomes acquainted with figures. It is hoped that this book will find a welcome among all persons interested in leading children by easy and sure paths to a knowledge of numbers.
