FLIGHT, CAMERA, ACTION! The History of U.S. Naval Aviation Photography and Photo-Reconnaissance by Douglas E. Campbell Pdf

The first U.S. Navy aerial photographs were taken in 1913 in support of fleet exercises off Guantanamo, Cuba. Following WWI, a Navy Photographic expedition went north, making the first aerial mapping photos of the Alaskan territory. WWII found Navy shuttermen in the Pacific theatre, performing pre- and post-attack reconnaissance, along with "hitting the beach" to record the war as it unfolded. Shortly after, Navy photographic units were in the Pacific to record early atomic bomb tests. The Navy's aerial photo reconnaissance mission, both at the front end with the weaponless aircrews and the output of thousands of images and photo interpretation, continued to develop through the mid-20th century. The last aerial photo plane in the Navy's inventory was retired after flying to the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum Annex at Dulles International Airport in Fairfax County, Virginia. The 74 year odyssey of Navy and Marine Corps aerial reconnaissance photography was finished.

Amelia Earhart's Faustian Bargain by Dr. Justin B. Clearsky Pdf

About the Book On July 09, 2017, the History Channel aired a television documentary called Amelia Earhart: The Lost Evidence, which attracted a world-wide audience of 4.3 million views. The highlight of the History Channel’s Earhart documentary was a photograph discovered by retired federal agent Les Kinney in the National Archives stamped with official Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) markings. In the photo, a ship can be seen towing a barge with an airplane on the back and on a nearby dock are several people, of which two of them resemble Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan. For the truth seeker who is interested in understanding the “whole story” behind Earhart’s round-the-world flight, who earnestly desires to know who really sponsored and funded the flight; why the Electra was modified the way it was; why the plane crashed in Hawaii; why an identical plane of the same model was in Miami, the same week Earhart departed on her trip; what Earhart really did during the week she was in Bandoeng; why Earhart’s radio messages were crafted the way they were; and what really prevented Earhart and Noonan from completing the flight are all questions that are answered in this work (and more), with evidence to back them. About the Author The author’s work also devotes one entire chapter to a detailed forensic study and analysis of all that is captured in the Kinney-discovered dock photo and as a result, can once and for all, time-stamp the date the photograph was taken. A work that reexamines the mountain of evidence that all along, has been staring the world in the face ever since Earhart and Noonan disappeared. A work that is crammed with informative photographs, charts, diagrams, maps and analyses from an author who is now retired and free from all former oaths and obligations formerly made to and given in, the service of “the devil.”

The Submarine Has No Friends by Douglas E. Campbell,Charles R. Hinman Pdf

At last count, more than 80 U.S. submarines recorded some type of actual "friendly fire" incident in which they were involved during their WWII war patrols. From being attacked by Allied bombers, depth-charged by U.S. ships or fired upon by armed Allied merchant ships, submariners quickly came to understand the bitter truth of the maxim: 'The submarine has no friends.' While the majority of submarines and their crew escaped with little more than bruised egos or minor injuries, three submarines and their crews were lost to friendly fire. For the first time in book format, a serious and most comprehensive research effort has gone into capturing all such "friendly fire" incidents involving U.S. submarines during World War II. Compiled through relentless research by the co-authors, their stories of loss and survival by "other than the enemy" is presented within these pages.

A Gathering of Extraordinary Individuals: Thomas Mack Wilhoite/Kenitra American High School, Morocco, 1956-1976 by Douglas E. Campbell Pdf

We are a gathering of extraordinary individuals who met under extraordinary circumstances. Coming of age in a small high school in Morocco decades ago, we have something unique in common, and decades later it has somehow never left us. We are the Sultans of Thomas Mack Wilhoite/Kenitra American High School. Be it the first graduating class of three Seniors in 1956 to the last Class of 1976, our experiences as students were sharply tuned to our environment. We were not strangers in a strange land; we were welcomed by the Moroccan people as if we were visiting relatives. The sights, sounds, tastes and smells of Morocco were absorbed by hundreds of students no matter what span of years we were there. We can all relate, and laugh at, similar experiences of our teenage years growing up in and around Kenitra/Port Lyautey, Mehdia Beach, Rabat, and other nearby military bases. Within this book are the memories of those days as told by the former students and teachers of our school.

Continuity of Government: How the U.S. Government Functions After All Hell Breaks Loose by Douglas E. Campbell Pdf

The term "Continuity of Government," or COG, runs from the dubious "duck and cover" method of personal protection against the effects of a nuclear explosion to the more serious measures of continual government inventories of grain silos, the Strategic National Stockpile, the uncapping of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the dispersal of transportable bridges, water purification, mobile refineries, mobile de-contamination facilities, mobile general and special purpose disaster mortuary facilities. For anyone researching in the field of COG - from Civil Defense to Presidential succession to the various U.S.-based COG operations (Operations OPAL, ALERT, BUSTER, JANGLE. DESERT ROCK, UPSHOT, KEYHOLE, etc.), this book reflects two years of research by the author within the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Of interest may be the first 100 pages on the history of COG and also the listing of thousands of COG-related titles that rest on the shelves in NARA for your additional scrutiny.

On the Potomac River by Douglas E. Campbell,Thomas B. Sherman Pdf

The Potomac River meanders in its 383-mile journey past natural settings of the forests, rocks and falls (Great Falls, Little Falls, Three Sisters Rocks, Mather Gorge), the convergence of other rivers into the Potomac (the Shenandoah River at Harpers Ferry, the Eastern Branch of the Potomac at Washington, D.C., now called Anacostia River) and the architecture of man-made points of interest (Mount Vernon, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Harper's Ferry, Fort Washington). Douglas Campbell (writer) and Thomas Sherman (artist) followed the entire length of the winding Potomac through its four distinct geographical areas: the Appalachian highlands of the westernmost portion of Maryland and the northern portion of West Virginia, Maryland's Cumberland Valley (called Shenandoah Valley in Virginia), the rolling Piedmont country beyond the Catocin mountains and the brackish Tidewater area where the waters become affected by the tidal pulls of the sun and moon.

Shooting the Front by Terrence J. Finnegan Pdf

Although photography was already a well-established fixture of 19th century society, it was the marriage of photography and the airplane that created the new military art of aerial observation during World War I. Shooting the Front is a pioneering study of the impact of aerial photography on America's fledgling air force during its baptism of fire above the trenches of the Western Front. This comprehensive history from the Defense Intelligence Agency highlights aerial photography's ability to command the high ground and provide a concise view of a battle area, both tactically and strategically. It is an authoritative account of aerial reconnaissance and the interpretation of photographs as they evolved into the most important sources of intelligence along the entire Western Front during the Great War. This comprehensive resource will interest military history and aviation enthusiasts, as well as students of the history of intelligence. The numerous illustrations, many never before published, include images of aircraft, cameras, and people, authentic official aerial photos, and maps in varying scales, all designed to help the reader relive the exhilarating and dangerous experience of aerial observation in World War I.

Eyes All Over the Sky by James Streckfuss Pdf

The impact of the unsung heroes of WWI—“a must for any aviation enthusiast to further complement work on aerial reconnaissance in modern warfare” (Roads to the Great War), Beyond the heroic deeds of the fighter pilots and bombers of World War I, the real value of military aviation lay elsewhere; aerial reconnaissance, observation, and photography impacted the fighting in many ways, but little has been written about it. Balloons and airplanes regulated artillery fire, infantry liaison aircraft followed attacking troops and the retreats of defenders, aerial photographers aided operational planners and provided the data for perpetually updated maps, and naval airplanes, airships, and balloons acted as aerial sentinels in a complex anti-submarine warfare organization. Reconnaissance crews at the Battles of the Marne and Tannenberg averted disaster. Eyes All Over the Sky fully explores all the aspects of aerial reconnaissance and its previously under-appreciated significance. Also included are the individual experiences of British, American, and German airmen—true pioneers of aviation warfare. “With an interesting selection of photos, the book is not only an excellent reference—it is historically important.” —Classic Wings “This well-researched history belongs on the shelf of anyone with a serious interest in the air war or the ground war of 1914-1918.” —Steve Suddaby, former president of the World War One Historical Association

Blue Moon over Cuba by William B Ecker USN (ret.),Kenneth V. Jack,Michael Dobbs Pdf

Most books on the Cuban Missile Crisis tell the story using the memoirs of those who advised President Kennedy as he struggled to avoid World War III. This book is the only known personal account of the lead photographic reconnaissance squadron's scouting dangerous low-level operations, flying the supersonic RF-8A Crusader, during the classified Operation Blue Moon. Captain Ecker was the commanding officer of US Navy Light Photographic Squadron 62 (VFP-62, otherwise known as “Fightin' Photo”) during the Cuban Missile Crisis, a team created for reconnaissance and aerial photography, and consulted on the movie Thirteen Days, which included dramatic scenes of his first mission over Cuba on October 23, 1962. Blue Moon over Cuba is an authoritative and complete account of the low-level reconnaissance that might be said to have helped JFK avert nuclear Armageddon.
