In 1954, the French writer, politician, and publisher André Malraux posed at home for a photographer from the magazine Paris Match, surrounded by pages from his forthcoming book Le musée imaginaire de la sculpture mondiale. The enchanting metaphor of the musée imaginaire (imaginary museum) was built upon that illustrated art book, and Malraux was one of its greatest champions. Drawing on a range of contemporary publications, he adopted images and responded to ideas. Indeed, Malraux’s book on the floor is a variation of photographer André Vigneau’s spectacular Encyclopédie photographique de l’art, published in five volumes from 1935 on—years before Malraux would enter this field. Both authors were engaged in juxtaposing artworks via photographs and publishing these photographs by the hundreds, but Malraux was the better sloganeer. Starting from a close examination of the photograph of Malraux in his salon, art historian Walter Grasskamp takes the reader back to the dawn of this genre of illustrated art book. He shows how it catalyzed the practice of comparing works of art on a global scale. Tests were conducted to determine the resistance to fire of welded steel plate and beam floor assemblies with various conditions of floor covering on the plates, and ceiling protections beneath the beams. The trials included fire exposures from the burnout of combustible materials ranging from 10 to 40 lb/sq ft on the floor surface as well as standard fire endurance tests in which the ceiling of the structure was exposed to fire. The results of the tests indicated that the use of steel floor structures was practical from considerations of fire safety. For the test conditions established, fire exposure on top of the floor did not heat the structural steel supporting members sufficiently to cause load failure or collapse, and did not produce untenable conditions in the room below. In tests involving fire exposure to the underside of floors, the fire endurance times, based solely on heat transmission criteria, ranged from 1 hr 24 min to over 4 hr. Temperature levels attained by the structural members and deflection of the floor assemblies are also reported. (Author).

The House of a Thousand Floors is one of the earliest science-fiction novels in European literature, published first in 1929. Besides being a pioneer in its genre, the book is highly regarded for its general merits as psychological literature. The novel tells the story of a dream in fever of a soldier wounded in World War I. He finds himself in the stairway of a gigantic (and kafkaesque) tower-like building, which is a metaphor for modern society. He learns that his task is to rescue Princess Tamara from Muller, the lord of the edifice. After a number of surrealistic encounters in the building, during which he is hailed as a liberator by many and is hunted by the cruel security guards, the main character finds Tamara and faces the cruel lord of Mullerdom. The novel makes fine use of a range of experimental styles and techniques. At times, linear storytelling gives way to a collage of incongruous elements: excerpts from fictitious books, encyclopedia articles, radio broadcast transcripts are used as a shortcut to describe places or events; other narrative ingredients include fanciful advertisements, ludicrous administrative documents or political slogans which highlight the idiosyncrasies of this decadent world.
