Flora of North America by Flora of North America Editorial Committee Pdf

Flora of North America, Volume 22, is the first of five volumes covering monocots in North America north of Mexico. The volume comprises many groups of acquatic plants and the North American relatives of groups that have their richest number of species in the New World tropics. Included among the treatments are the rush family (Junaceae), which include important indicator species in wetland habitats, the cat-tails (Typhaceae), spiderworts (Commelinaceae), aroids (Araceae), and pondweeds (Potamogetonaceae). Thirty families are included in this volume, representing a diverse range of plant forms - from marine Zosteraceae (eel-grasses) to stately Arecaceae (palms) and the naturalised exotic Zingiberaceae (gingers), Heliconiaceae (heliconias) and Musaceae (bananas).

Guide to the Vascular Plants of Tennessee by Edward W. Chester Pdf

The product of twenty-five years of planning, research, and writing, Guide to the Vascular Plants of Tennessee is the most comprehensive, detailed, and up-to-date resource of its kind for the flora of the Volunteer State, home to nearly 2,900 documented taxa. Not since Augustin Gattinger’s 1901 Flora of Tennessee and a Philosophy of Botany has a work of this scope been attempted. The team of editors, authors, and contributors not only provide keys for identifying the major groups, families, genera, species, and lesser taxa known to be native or naturalized within the state—with supporting information about distribution, frequency of occurrence, conservation status, and more—but they also offer a plethora of descriptive information about the state’s physical environment and vegetation, along with a summary of its rich botanical history, dating back to the earliest Native American inhabitants. Other features of the book include a comprehensive glossary of botanical terms and an array of line drawings that illustrate the identifying characteristics of vascular plants, from leaf shape and surface features to floral morphology and fruit types. Finally, the book’s extensive keys are indexed by families, scientific names, and common names. The result is a user-friendly work that researchers, students, environmentalists, foresters, conservationists, and indeed anyone interested in Tennessee and its botanical legacy and resources will value for years to come.

More than 2,700 new literature citations document identification of previously unknown toxicants, mechanisms of intoxication, additional reports of intoxication problems, and significant changes in the classification of plant families and genera and associated changes in plant nomenclature. Toxic Plants of North America, Second Edition is a comprehensive, essential resource for veterinarians, toxicologists, agricultural extension agents, animal scientists, and poison control professionals.

Wildflowers in the Field and Forest by Steven Earl Clemants,Carol Gracie Pdf

Many of us have stopped to pick wildflowers or have admired them as they flourished in fields and along hiking trails and roads. Always appreciated, but not always recognized, these beauties can now be identified with Wildflowers in the Field and Forest, the most inclusive field guide available to the wildflowers of the Northeastern United States. Designed for easy use, the book features two-page spreads with descriptive text and range maps on the left page and color photos on the right. The descriptions are concise, but thorough, and the range maps show both where the plant grows and at what time of year it is likely to be in bloom. Plants are grouped by flower color, usually the feature first noticed by the observer. The species are subsequently grouped by leaf arrangement, type of leaves, and number of flower parts as indicated in the "quick characters" box at the top of each page. There is also a simple key in the beginning of the book that allows one to quickly narrow the search to a few pages. In addition to the more common and conspicuous wildflowers, many of the lesser known, and often overlooked, species are depicted. Over 1400 species are described with nearly all of them illustrated with full-color photos. While these photos generally show the flowers of the plant, insets of leaves and occasionally fruits are often included as well. A bar on each photo allows users to accurately judge the actual size of each flower. Both serious botanists and casual nature observers will welcome this beautifully photographed and expertly detailed guide.

Flora of North America: Volume 25: Magnoliophyta: Commelinidae (in part): Poaceae, part 2 by Flora of North America Editorial Committee,,Mary E. Barkworth,Kathleen M. Capels,Sandy Long,Michael B. Piep Pdf

Volume 25 of Flora North America is one of two volumes on grasses to be published in this series. Together they will provide a comprehensive, authoritative, illustrated account of this important group of plants. Most of the species treated are either native to North America north of Mexico or are introduced species that are now established in the region, but there are many that do not fit into these categories. Among the additional species are several that the USDA has identified as major weed threats; and others that are known only as cultivated plants, some being cultivated for their ornamental value, others as sources for human food or animal forage. For instance, volume 25 includes such ecologically important species as Big and Little Bluestem, economically important species of Sorghum and Corn, ornamental species such as Job's Tears and Hakonechloa, and noxious weeds such as Itchgrass. The volume includes identification keys, descriptions, line drawings, and ecological characteristics for each of the species; distribution maps for the native and established species; and a list of the synonyms currently in use for the accepted names. The treatments, each of which has been extensively reviewed, are based on a combination of original observations and critical review of the literature.
