Flying Fish in the Great White North by Christopher Stuart Taylor Pdf

Canadians are proud of their multicultural image both at home and abroad. But that image isn’t grounded in historical facts. As recently as the 1960s, the Canadian government enforced discriminatory, anti-Black immigration policies, designed to restrict and prohibit the entry of Black Barbadians and Black West Indians. The Canadian state capitalized on the public’s fear of the “Black unknown” and racist stereotypes to justify their exclusion. In Flying Fish in the Great White North, Christopher Stuart Taylor utilizes the intersectionality of race, gender and class to challenge the perception that Blacks were simply victims of racist and discriminatory Canadian and international immigration policies by emphasizing the agency and educational capital of Black Barbadian emigrants during this period. In fact, many Barbadians were middle to upper class and were well educated, and many, particularly women, found autonomous agency and challenged the very Canadian immigration policies designed to exclude them.

Unsettling the Great White North by Michele A. Johnson,Funké Aladejebi Pdf

An exhaustive volume of leading scholarship in the field of Black Canadian history, Unsettling the Great White North highlights the diverse experiences of persons of African descent within the chronicles of Canada’s past. The book considers histories and theoretical framings within the disciplines of history, sociology, law, and cultural and gender studies to chart the mechanisms of exclusion and marginalization in "multicultural" Canada and to situate Black Canadians as speakers and agents of their own lives. Working to interrupt the myth of benign whiteness that has been deeply implanted into the country’s imagination, Unsettling the Great White North uncovers new narratives of Black life in Canada.

Our Lives, Our Heritage by Angela J Carter Pdf

Imagine leaving all you know to come to a country where the majority of people are a different colour from you and have a different culture from yours. You aspire to create a better life for yourself and your family, but you are told you can’t work without “Canadian experience.” While some people accept and even welcome you, others refuse to sit next to you on the bus. Would you stay? Some of the 38 seniors featured in Our Lives, Our Heritage were part of a small wave of Caribbean immigrants who arrived in Canada in the late 50s and 60s under the West Indian Domestic Scheme. Others were able to immigrate to Canada when a family member sponsored them. Some came as visitors, stayed, and faced a life in the shadows until they became legal immigrants. Yet no matter how they arrived, all chose to stay in Canada. Here, they survived, thrived, and helped to build the communities they joined. Their stories are an important piece of Canada’s social history and serve as a reminder that immigrants have and still do build and strengthen our country.

Why Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Matter: Challenges And Solutions by Bin Srinidhi Pdf

This book integrates the current research on diversity, equity, and inclusion with corporate practice and describes how these initiatives affect organizations' morale, performance, and output. Academic researchers, corporate executives tasked with implementing Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI), and regulators face the problem of balancing DEI initiatives, which could generate diverse ideas beneficial to the organization, with concerns about diluting meritocracy. Building a diverse workforce could improve both organizational well-being and social harmony. Research has shown that building a diverse workforce often results in communication and coordination issues and unjustified pay and performance gaps, engendering feelings of exclusion among diverse individuals. The book describes how organizations address these issues in various settings ranging from accounting firms to health care providers. It covers settings with gender and racial diversities and clarifies the difference between equality and equity. Its coverage includes dealing with concealable disabilities and promoting equity across diverse populations in organizational and social settings.

Codex Canadensis and the Writings of Louis Nicolas by François-Marc Gagnon Pdf

Part art, part science, part anthropology, this ambitious project presents an early Canadian perspective on natural history that is as much artistic and fantastical as it is encyclopedic. Edited and introduced by François-Marc Gagnon, The Codex Canadensis and the Writings of Louis Nicolas showcases an intriguing attempt to document the life of the new world - flora, fauna, and aboriginal. The book brings together for the first time the illustrated Codex Canadensis and The Natural History of the New World, following Gagnon's argument that both can be attributed to Louis Nicolas, a French Jesuit priest who travelled throughout Canada between 1664 and 1675. Histoire Naturelle des Indes Occidentales, originally written in classical French, has been put in modern French by Réal Ouellet and translated into English by Nancy Senior. The Natural History presents a pre-Linnaean botany and pre-Darwinian account of living things, including hundreds of species of plants and vivid descriptions of wildlife. It is thoroughly annotated, focusing on the contemporary identification of species, as the result of a pan-Canadian collaboration of experts in fields from linguistics to biology and botany. The Codex Canadensis, currently in the collection of the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is reproduced in full and provides both a fascinating visual account of wildlife as Nicolas saw it and a rare example of early Canadian art. Gagnon's introduction profiles Louis Nicolas and analyses connections between his work and European examples of natural illustration from the period. The Codex Canadensis and the Writings of Louis Nicolas shows how the wildlife and native inhabitants of the new world were understood and documented by a seventeenth-century European and makes available fundamental documents in the history and visual culture of early North America.

The Aliens Among Us by Leslie Anthony Pdf

A thoughtful, accessible look at the rapidly growing issue of invasive plants, animals, and microbes around the globe with a focus on the scientific issues and ecological, health, and other challenges From an award-winning adventure and science journalist comes an eye-opening exploration of a burgeoning environmental phenomenon and the science coalescing around it. Leslie Anthony leads readers on adventures physical and philosophical as he explores how and why invasive species are hijacking ecosystems around the globe. Weaving science, travel, history, and humor with diverse examples to chart and describe the phases of species invasion and human response, Anthony introduces field researchers and managers who seek to understand the biological, social, and economic aspects of this complex issue, and whose work collectively suggests the emergence of a global shadow economy centered on invasives. With tales of pythons in the Everglades, Asian carp and lamprey in the Great Lakes, Japanese knotweed seemingly everywhere, and the invasive organisms we don't see--pathogens and microbes such as the Zika virus--this book rivets attention on a new ecological reality.
