Following Reason by Mark Manolopoulos Pdf

Throughout history, humanity has regularly followed anti-rational figures and forces: demagogic rulers, perverted deities, exploitative economic systems, and so on. Such leadership and followership have wrought all kinds of oppression and conflict. What if this pattern could be altered? What if society were led by Reason instead? Prompted by Cicero’s exhortation to "follow reason as leader as though it were a god", Following Reason: A Theory and Strategy for Rational Leadership explores this intriguing and potentially transformative possibility. Manolopoulos uniquely blends leadership psychology with a deep understanding of philosophical reasoning theory to show how leaders can bravely reimagine and reconstruct society. The book retraces leadership mis-steps in history, and proposes a more "logicentric" theory of leadership, built on compelling philosophical axioms and arguments. Following Reason emphasizes the weight of philosophy and cognition in leadership, and advocates for a diverse network that can create, uphold, and implement a blueprint for a better global society. This wide-ranging and timely book is ideal for leadership, management, and philosophy students at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Economic Geography by Pierre-Philippe Combes,Thierry Mayer,Jacques-François Thisse Pdf

Economic Geography is the most complete, up-to-date textbook available on the important new field of spatial economics. This book fills a gap by providing advanced undergraduate and graduate students with the latest research and methodologies in an accessible and comprehensive way. It is an indispensable reference for researchers in economic geography, regional and urban economics, international trade, and applied econometrics, and can serve as a resource for economists in government. Economic Geography presents advances in economic theory that explain why, despite the increasing mobility of commodities, ideas, and people, the diffusion of economic activity is very unequal and remains agglomerated in a limited number of spatial entities. The book complements theoretical analysis with detailed discussions of the empirics of the economics of agglomeration, offering a mix of theoretical and empirical research that gives a unique perspective on spatial disparities. It reveals how location continues to matter for trade and economic development, yet how economic integration is transforming the global economy into an economic space in which activities are performed within large metropolitan areas exchanging goods, skills, and information. Economic Geography examines the future implications of this evolution in the spatial economy and relates them to other major social and economic trends. Provides a complete introduction to economic geography Explains the latest theory and methodologies Covers the empirics of agglomeration, from spatial concentration measurement to structural estimations of economic geography models Includes history and background of the field Serves as a textbook for students and a resource for professionals

The Biostatistics of Aging by Gilberto Levy,Bruce Levin Pdf

A practical and clarifying approach to aging andaging-related diseases Providing a thorough and extensive theoretical framework, TheBiostatistics of Aging: From Gompertzian Mortality to an Index ofAging-Relatedness addresses the surprisinglysubtlenotion—with consequential biomedical and public healthrelevance—of what it means for acondition to be related toaging. In this pursuit, the book presents a new quantitativemethodto examine the relative contributions of genetic andenvironmental factors to mortality anddisease incidence in apopulation. With input from evolutionary biology, population genetics, demography, and epidemiology, this medically motivated bookdescribes an index of aging-relatedness and also features: Original results on the asymptotic behavior of the minimum oftime-to-event random variables, which extends those of theclassical statistical theory of extreme values A comprehensive and satisfactory explanation based onbiological principles of the Gompertz pattern of mortality in humanpopulations The development of an evolution-based model of causationrelevant to mortality and aging-related diseases of complexetiology An explanation of how and why the description of humanmortality by the Gompertz distribution can be improved upon fromfirst principles The amply illustrated analysis of real-world data, including aprogram for conducting the analysis written in the freely availableR statistical software Technical appendices including mathematical material as well asan extensive and multidisciplinary bibliography on aging andaging-related diseases The Biostatistics of Aging: From Gompertzian Mortality to anIndex of Aging-Relatedness is an excellent resource forpractitioners and researchers with an interest in aging andaging-related diseases from the fields of medicine, biology, gerontology, biostatistics, epidemiology, demography, and publichealth.
