Water for Food Security and Well-being in Latin America and the Caribbean by Bárbara A. Willaarts,Alberto Garrido,M. Ramón Llamas Pdf

This volume provides an analytical and facts-based overview on the progress achieved in water security in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region over during the last decade, and its links to regional development, food security and human well-being. Although the book takes a regional approach, covering a vast of data pertaining to most of the LAC region, some chapters focus on seven countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru). A full understanding of LAC’s trends progress requires framing this region in the global context: an ever more globalized world where LAC has an increasing geopolitical power and a growing presence in international food markets. The book’s specific objectives are: (1) exploring the improvements and links between water and food security in LAC countries; (2) assessing the role of the socio-economic ‘megatrends’ in LAC, identifying feedback processes between the region’s observed pattern of changes regarding key biophysical, economic and social variables linked to water and food security; and (3) reviewing the critical changes that are taking place in the institutional and governance water spheres, including the role of civil society, which may represent a promising means to advancing towards the goal of improving water security in LAC. The resulting picture shows a region where recent socioeconomic development has led to important advances in the domains of food and water security. Economic growth in LAC and its increasingly important role in international trade are intense in terms of use of natural resources such as land, water and energy. This poses new and important challenges for sustainable development. The reinforcement of national and global governance schemes and their alignment on the improvement of human well-being is and will remain an inescapable prerequisite to the achievement of long-lasting security. Supporting this bold idea with facts and science-based conclusions is the ultimate goal of the book.

This book highlights the concepts and assessment methods of Ecological Footprints. Ecological footprint is defined as, ”a measure of how much area of biologically productive land and water an individual, population or activity requires to produce all the resources it consumes and to absorb the waste it generates, using prevailing technology and resource management practices”. Developed in 1992 by William Rees, it was the first footprint developed followed by other footprints such as Carbon, Water and Energy. Assessment of Ecological footprints strive for comparing consumption footprint to biological capacity. The Ecological Footprint as a Sustainability Metric by Mary J. Thornbush Pdf

This book examines the Ecological Footprint and biocapacity accounting within an applied development content for Costa Rica. By doing so, it is possible to track changes as well as perhaps link these to overarching global issues, such as trade, globalization, and food security, among other emergent topics based findings stemming from this methodology. Based on a timeseries since 1961, it is possible to track cross-temporal changes of land-type categories (for crop land, grazing land, forest land, fishing ground, built-up land, and carbon) of the Ecological Footprint and biocapacity conveying whether a country is in ecological deficit and what may be contributing to such a trend

World Regional and Cultural Footprints and Environmental Sustainability by Ebenezer O. Aka Pdf

The book examines the issues of sustainability in general. It addresses various socioeconomic determinants of ecological footprints in different world’s nations, regions, and cultures. Major socioeconomic determinants of ecological footprints are fleshed out using Comparative Model Analysis and rigorous Multiple Regression Analysis. The study exposes the inequitable distribution of the world’s ecological footprints and also heightens the concern about ecological imbalances and overshoots. It explains how sustainable development can be promoted and achieved in regional, national, and local jurisdictions. The study provides information that will likely help various governments and policy-makers determine if a given nation, region, or culture is on a sustainable path. It helps government leaders, planners, policy-makers, and even students of sustainability make a difference in mitigating the effects of various environmental stressors. If this book makes people and policy-makers in different countries, regions, and cultures think globally but act locally, then the objectives are well-served.

Virtual Water by Chittaranjan Ray,David McInnes,Matthew Sanderson Pdf

Virtual Water explores the role of "virtual water" – the water embedded in a product – in ongoing conversations of agriculture, trade and sustainability in an increasingly inter-connected world. A pervasive theme throughout the book is the general lack of knowledge of the use of water in producing and consuming food. The chapters, arising from a workshop supported by the OECD Co-operative Research Programme: Biological Resources Management for Sustainable Agricultural Systems, on virtual water, agriculture and trade at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, consider questions of gaps in knowledge, why sustainability matters and the policy implications of virtual water trade. Contributors show how water is a lens through which to examine an array of vital issues facing humanity and the planet: human and animal health; food production; environmental management; resource consumption; climate change adaptation and mitigation; economic development, trade and competitiveness; and ethics and consumer trust. Virtual Water will be of great interest to scholars of water, resource management and consumption, the environmental aspects of development, agriculture and food production. It originally published as a special issue of Water International.
