Not illustrated. 1901 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XIII A Macedonian Cry from Canada "And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed, saying: Come over to Macedonia and help us." (Acts 16: 9.) Two very important letters had been addressed to me from Quebec and Montreal in the beginning of January, 1859. The first was signed by about live hundred well-known names, --the second by about one hundred of the principal Roman Catholic French Canadians of the latter city. Both letters were pressing invitations to go and address them on my reasons for leaving the Roman Church. Many times before receiving these letters, the thought had come to me that it was my duty to go to Canada and attack the Church of Rome there, in her very stronghold. But I had postponed that work on account of the formidable difficulties and dangers connected with it. No two other places, probably, in the whole world, could be found, where Rome is so strong as Quebec and Montreal. To go and attack that giant power where it was surrounded and protected by its most impregnable oitadels and armed with its most terrible weapons seemed to me a foolish thing, --a sure suicide. Such was my way of reasoning till I received these two letters. But my views had to be modified and changed after their reception. How could I shut my ears to the cries of those precious, but perishing souls, who were so pressingly asking me to go and give them the bread of life? At the voice of one Macedonian, heard through a vision of the night, Paul had left everything to meet the appeal. Was it not my duty to go, when, not called by only one voice through a night vision, but by so many hundreds, and in such a public and solemn way? Having been assured by Mr. Gustave Demers, our ablest young evangelist, and...

Forty Years for Christ: An Historical Sermon (Classic Reprint) by S. Leroy Blake Pdf

Excerpt from Forty Years for Christ: An Historical Sermon II. Having canvassed the facts in regard to the causes which led to their formation, I shall now ask your attention to a few facts relative to the material history of the church and society. I begin with this, - for the first step taken towards a new church was the formation of an ecclesiastical society. For convenience of discussion, I shall divide this branch of my narrative into periods. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Fifty Years in the Church of Rome (Classic Reprint) by Father Chiniquy Pdf

Fifty Years in the Church of Rome is a book written by Father Charles Chiniquy. Chiniquy was a catholic priest born in Quebec, Canada and this book, his autobiography, is one of the best selling books in Canadian history. Chiniquy's book tells the story of the author's involvement in the Catholic Church, beginning with scenes of a little boy memorizing passages from the Bible. Chiniquy so loved the words of Jesus that he dedicated his life to the scriptures and became a Catholic priest. While serving as a priest, Chiniquy grew increasingly disillusioned with the institution of Catholicism and disgusted with many of the other men that served as priests. Chiniquy tells tales of the alcoholism, womanizing, and abuse that was common amongst other priests. The book discusses Chiniquy's split with Catholicism, excommunication from the church, and eventual rebirth as a Presbyterian pastor. The book also details Chiniquy's relationship with a young lawyer named Abraham Lincoln, and the author's hypothesis that the Jesuits were responsible for his assassination. Fifty Years in the Church of Rome is a fascinating account of life in the Catholic church. A controversial book since the day it was published, Chiniquy's work is not an unfair or biased account of Catholicism. It is clear that the author still holds Catholicism in high regard, however was simply unable to overlook the misdoings of other religious men within the Church. This book holds historical significance, as it brought to light many controversies that still dog the Catholic Church many years later. Readers interested in Catholicism and the religious path of a former priest will find this to be a highly engrossing book. Touching and ripe with emotion, Chiniquy's work was a sensation upon its original publication and remains a highly important work to this day. Fifty Years in the Church of Rome is highly recommended. These Forty Years, and After by William George Wallace Pdf

Excerpt from These Forty Years, and After: Being the Story, 1887-1927, of Bloor Street United Church, Toronto Then W. G. Wallace would come in, a human, vital soul. We loved his prayers, reverent, intimate, sincere, real. He was speaking with God for us and for the world. Then the people would lift up their hearts in praise, the whole congregation, not sections of it, in heart warming, soul-lifting praise. I know now better than then that the Angels heard and God, and that Heaven rocked with joy for that many a sinner was feeling his way back to his soul's home as those Bloor Street people praised God. Then the sermon, thoughtful, fresh, pulsing with reality, sincerity and spiritual power. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Letter to the Granville Street Church, Halifax, N. S (Classic Reprint) by James William Johnston Pdf

Excerpt from Letter to the Granville Street Church, Halifax, N. S It is about forty years since the Granville Street Baptist Church at Halifax was formed, principally by individuals who had then recently separated from the communion of the Church of England, and during all that long period I have been connected with it, either as a member of the Congregation or of the Church. In preparing, as I am now doing, an act of formal separation, it ought to appear whether I am taking this step without cause, or whether I am driven out by the violation, on the part of the Church, of fundamental principles of Christian Church union, which has made separation my duty and only alternative. But beyond and far above anything which affects you as a separate Church, and me as an individual, lie questions that vitally concern the government of independent Churches, the security of their members, and the independence of their ministers. In such a case it is my duty to speak plainly; but precedence or deference in any degree I do not claim; and if personal superiority were necessary to justify my assuming the office which I am now fulfilling, I should cast down my pen, and acknowledge that the vocation was not mine. Personal and Practical Christian Work (Classic Reprint) by Thomas C. Horton Pdf

Excerpt from Personal and Practical Christian Work For forty years it has been my privilege and delight to teach and practice the art of soul-winning. As a pastor, it has been my privilege to minister to the sick, the shut - ins, and those bereft of loved ones, and to form friendships that have endured for long years, but the supreme joy of my life has been found in clasping the hand of a man who has looked me in the eyes and said, I will take Jesus Christ to be my Saviour, and I will confess Him before men. If the pages of this book are used to lead others to engage in soul-saving service in which they will find unspeakable joy, it will not have been written in vain. There are many doors of usefulness open to Chris tians, but after fifty years of practical participation in church life, I am persuaded that the one door which has been opened to all by the Hand that was pierced, the one possible for all to enter, and the one for our attitude toward which we shall all be held accountable, - is the door through which He entered Who found the woman at the well and Who says to every believer, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. A Retrospect of Forty-Five Years' Christian Ministry by Jabez Burns Pdf

Excerpt from A Retrospect of Forty-Five Years' Christian Ministry: Public Work in Other Spheres of Benevolent Labour, and Tours in Various Lands, With Prayers on Theological and Other Subjects in Prose and Verse Egypt, Palestine, Asia Minor, and Turkey, and still more enlarged journeys all over the United States and the Canadas, my last tour taking in the long range from Portland, in Maine, to St. Francisco, and the Yosemite Valley in California. To my constant regard to a strictly temperate course of life, rigid adherence to dietetic and hydropathic principles and practice, under the blessing of God, I attribute my unconscious realiza tion of failure in any department of public work. My study over the vestry of our place of worship has been the chief place of intercourse and audience for the members of my church, and surrounded by several thousands of volumes, I have been at no loss for themes for the pulpit, platform, or the press. It has really been an earthly paradise of delights, and my old worm eaten folios, and chubby quartos, and stately octaves, with lesser forms and sizes, have been the choicest companions this world has afforded. Their profound silence when I have been busy, and their ready help when needed, and their constant associations with my mental cogitations, have endeared them to me be yond all power of expression. How delightful to have the glowing thoughts, sparkling ideas, and burning words of theologians, philosophers, poets, and orators from the time of Queen Bess to the last productions of living authors of every land under heaven. A Memoir of Happy Years, 1916-1953 (Classic Reprint) by E. Ashley Gerhard Pdf

Excerpt from A Memoir of Happy Years, 1916-1953 This is not a history of Christ Church, Winnetka. Nor is it intended to be in any important degree an autobiography. What I have attempted to do, and all I have attempted, has been to recall in writing something of what went on in the parish during the thirty-seven years of my rectorate, various characteristic incidents that occurred, certain personalities with whom it was my good for tune to have been most closely and helpfully associated and who played particularly important parts in my Winnetka ministry, and to expose my thinking and elements of my personal conviction that underlay and motivated my pastoral, as well as my teaching and preaching, ministry, while it was my God-given privilege to serve as Rector of Christ Church.
