Four Play by Sam Young Pdf

The racist and AntiSemitic tentacles of the Ku Klux Klan penetrate the teen community of Houston, Texas in the 1960s. Four high school friends are victims of student violence and the harsh treatment of their sinister assistant principal. Accepting the erroneous story of the attackers, he hands out suspensions to the four friends seriously damaging their high school records and potentially barring them from acceptance at better colleges. They engage in a battle to clear their names as parents and lawyers join the fight ultimately leading to the exposure of the Klan's involvement. A graduation car trip through the deep south and up the east coast exposes more racism and leads one of the boys to accept confidential recruitment into the FBI as a mole on the Tulane University campus in the fall. This is the first of a five book series following these four diverse and compelling protagonists for twenty years within the backdrop of social issues. Many segments inspired by actual events.

Add her two kids and her now booming interior design business to the mix, and she winds up with a nightmarish schedule but a dreamy love life. So who are the contestants? There's Sean, the sexy foreign affairs correspondent who sweeps Jo off her feet and proves to be masterful in bed; Martin, the music industry mogul who offers luxury, stability, and a glamorous lifestyle; and Conor, Jo's trusted confidant, who knows just what to say to make her smile (why hadn't she noticed his irresistible smile until now?). Then there's Jeff, her ex-husband: she wouldn't consider hooking up with him again, would she? It could happen--especially when Jeff's romance with the sweet young thing sours and he launches a full-scale campaign to win Jo back. Dessert FourPlay by Johnny Iuzzini,Roy Finamore Pdf

Consider the strawberry: its familiar flavor and texture; its fresh, sweet smell. Now imagine the same fruit distilled and carbonated for a refreshing soda, slow-roasted for a reinvented strawberry shortcake, made into a creamy strawberry ice cream and a chewy strawberry leather, and combined with coconut cream and crisp chocolate pastry. Alone, each dessert is a taste of paradise, but together this “fourplay,” or tasting, created by Johnny Iuzzini, superstar pastry chef of the celebrated four-star restaurant Jean Georges in New York, is a sophisticated explosion of a familiar flavor that begins with the taste of strawberry rich on your tongue and ends with an effervescent tingle in your nose. Far from the conventional slice of cake at the end of a meal, Johnny’s seasonal creations—four mini desserts in a quartet of complementary flavors and textures—are a culinary adventure. In Dessert FourPlay, he shares his secrets and inspirations, delivering standout recipes for incredible desserts that can be served alone or combined into his signature fourplay groupings, creating the perfect sweet finale for any meal. With the home cook in mind, Johnny offers tips on simplifying professional recipes and provides basic recipes for transcendent cakes, cookies, tuiles, ice creams, sorbets, granités, and more. These building blocks can be used to create magnificent multifaceted desserts, or they can be perfect desserts by themselves. Some recipes have surprising versatility: the shiny smooth chocolate glaze Johnny uses to ice cakes doubles as the ultimate hot fudge sauce; a lemony madeleine batter becomes a layer in a cake. Iuzzini pairs cool with hot, crispy with creamy, sweet with spicy, and the expected—chocolate, strawberries, and cinnamon—with the unexpected—chiles, beets, and chocolatey puffs. The result: desserts that refresh, inspire, and satisfy beyond expectations. Dessert FourPlay invigorates all the senses and inspires home cooks to create innovative desserts of their own.

Capek Four Plays by Karel Capek Pdf

"There was no writer like him. . . prophetic assurance mixed with surrealistic humour and hard-edged social satire: a unique combination" (Arthur Miller) This volume brings together fresh new translations of four of his most popular plays, more than ever relevant today. In R. U. R., the Robot - an idea Çapek was the first to invent - gradually takes over all aspects of human existence except procreation; The Insect Play is a satirical fable in which beetles, butterflies and ants give dramatic form to different philosophies of life; The Makropulos Case is a fantasy about human mortality, finally celebrating the average lifespan; The White Plague is a savage and anguished satire against fascist dictatorship and the virus of inhumanity.

Women on the Edge by Ruby Blondell,Mary-Kay Gamel,Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz,Bella Vivante Pdf

Women on the Edge, a collection of Alcestis, Medea, Helen, and Iphegenia at Aulis, provides a broad sample of Euripides' plays focusing on women, and spans the chronology of his surviving works, from the earliest, to his last, incomplete, and posthumously produced masterpiece. Each play shows women in various roles--slave, unmarried girl, devoted wife, alienated wife, mother, daughter--providing a range of evidence about the kinds of meaning and effects the category woman conveyed in ancient Athens. The female protagonists in these plays test the boundaries--literal and conceptual--of their lives. Although women are often represented in tragedy as powerful and free in their thoughts, speech and actions, real Athenian women were apparently expected to live unseen and silent, under control of fathers and husbands, with little political or economic power. Women in tragedy often disrupt "normal" life by their words and actions: they speak out boldly, tell lies, cause public unrest, violate custom, defy orders, even kill. Female characters in tragedy take actions, and raise issues central to the plays in which they appear, sometimes in strong opposition to male characters. The four plays in this collection offer examples of women who support the status quo and women who oppose and disrupt it; sometimes these are the same characters.

Man, Play, and Games by Roger Caillois Pdf

According to Roger Caillois, play is an occasion of pure waste. In spite of this - or because of it - play constitutes an essential element of human social and spiritual development. In this study, the author defines play as a free and voluntary activity that occurs in a pure space, isolated and protected from the rest of life.

Testimonies by Emily Mann Pdf

The first major collection by playwright Emily Mann contains four powerful docudramas. Based on extensive interviews of real people's experiences, these plays explore various moral issues and questions that still resonate in America today. Annulla: An Autobiography is a solo piece featuring the reflections of an elderly Jewish woman who survived the Holocaust by pretending to by Aryan. Jerry Talmer of the New York Post calls Annulla "one bangup 90 minutes of theatre...I don't know when I've been stimulated as much by anything on the living stage." Still Life is composed of interviews with a Vietnam War veteran with PTSD, the pregnant wife he physically and emotionally abuses, and the mistress who finds herself entranced by his passion and violence. This Obie Award-winning play is "a powerful affair, full of passion and viability...Mann offers no easy answers or pat solutions, she simply invites us into these three characters' lives" (Los Angeles Times). Execution of Justice follows the trial of the former policeman who shot San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and openly gay City Supervisor Harvey Milk in 1979. Called "thought-provoking...a taut courtroom drama" (New York Times), Execution of Justice "is theatre reasserting its claim on the country's moral conscience" (Washington Post). Greensboro: A Requiem is "a particularly all-American tragedy" (New York Times) as Mann interviews those involved in the largely unreported 1979 massacre of unarmed demonstrators by members of the Ku Klux Klan, Greensboro police force, and FBI. Forbes calls Greensboro "a provocation, a potent expos of the 'less-than-human thing' which fuels the politics of hate and injustice in America."
