Foxe's Book Of Martyrs by John Foxe Pdf

Acts and Monuments by John Foxe, popularly abridged as Foxe's Book of Martyrs, is a celebrated work of church history and martyrology, first published in English in 1563 by John Day. Published early in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and only five years after the death of the Roman Catholic Queen Mary I, Foxe's Acts and Monuments was an affirmation of the Protestant Reformation in England during a period of religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants. Foxe's account of church history asserted a historical justification that was intended to establish the Church of England as a continuation of the true Christian church rather than as a modern innovation, and it contributed significantly to a nationalistic repudiation of the Roman Catholic Church. The sequence of the work, initially in five books, covered first early Christian martyrs, a brief history of the medieval church, including the Inquisitions, and a history of the Wycliffite or Lollard movement. It then dealt with the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI, during which the dispute with Rome had led to the separation of the English Church from papal authority and the issuance of the Book of Common Prayer. The final book treated the reign of Queen Mary and the Marian Persecutions. (courtesy of wikipedia.com)

Fox's Book of Martyrs, Or the Acts and Monuments of the Christian Church by John Foxe Pdf

Excerpt from Fox's Book of Martyrs, or the Acts and Monuments of the Christian Church: Being a Complete History of the Lives, Sufferings, and Deaths of the Christian Martyrs; From the Commencement of Christianity to the Present Period; To Which Is Added an Account of the Inquisition The next martyr we ineet with, according to St. Luke, in the History of the Apostles' Acts, was James the son of Zebedee, the elder brother of John, and a relative of our Lord; for his mother Salome was cousin-genrian to the Virgin Mary. They were men of warm tempers, and, therefore, surnamed Bo anerges by Christ; yet these two and Peter had the more special confidence of our Saviour, and were on that account objects of unreasonable caution. It was not until ten years after the death of Stephen, that the second martyrdom took place; for no sooner had Herod A 'p pa been appointed governor of J udaaa, Elan, with a view to ingratiate himself with them, he raised a sharp persecution against the Christians, and determined to make an effec tual blow, by striking at their leaders. James, as an active propagator of the gospel, was the first object of his zeal, and he condemned him to death with little ceremony, and ordered him to be executed without delay. The account given us by an eminent primitive writer, Cle mens Alexandrinus, ought not to be overlooked; that, as James was led to the place of mm tyrdom, his accuser-was brought to repent of his conduct by the apostle's extraordinary courage and undauntedness, and fell down at his feet to request his pardon, professing him self a Christian, and resolving that James should not receive the crown of martyrdom alone. Hence they were both beheaded at the same time. Thus did the first apostolic martyr cheer fully and resolutely receive that cup, which he had told our Saviour he was ready to drink. Foxe ́s Book of Martyrs - John Foxe by John Foxe Pdf

"Foxe ́s Book of Martyrs," despite being little known even among Christians, is a classic of world literature whose impactful content resulted in significant changes in the religious and political consciousness of England. The author, John Foxe, spares readers none of the detailed tortures suffered by martyrs such as Andrew, Matthew, James, John Wycliffe, John Huss, among countless others. Foxe, who himself was persecuted and accused of heresy, turned to writing in the hope that his readers would repudiate the barbarities committed in his days, and indeed, his accounts, recorded during the time of the Reformation, exerted powerful influence on English society. "Foxe ́s Book of Martyrs" is a timeless work addressing a subject that, unfortunately, still permeates civilization in the 21st century: religious intolerance. It is a shocking yet revealing read of the difficulty humans have in learning from their past mistakes.
