Computational Methods in Multiphase Flow VIII by P. Vorobieff,C.A. Brebbia,J.L. Munoz-Cobo Pdf

This book presents the latest research in one of the most challenging, yet most universally applicable areas of technology. Multiphase flows are found in all areas of technology, at all length scales and flow regimes, involving compressible or incompressible linear or nonlinear fluids. The range of related problems of interest is vast, including astrophysics, biology, geophysics, atmospheric process, and many areas of engineering. The solution of the equations that describe such complex problems often requires a combination of advanced computational and experimental methods. For example, any models developed must be validated through the application of expensive and difficult experimental techniques. Numerous problems in the area thus remain as yet unsolved, including modelling nonlinear fluids, modelling and tracking interfaces, dealing with multiple length scales, characterising phase structures, and treating drop break-up and coalescence. The papers contained in the book were presented at the eighth in a well established series of biennial conferences that began in 2001. They represent close interaction between numerical modellers and other researchers working to gradually resolve the many outstanding issues in understanding of multiphase flow. The papers in the book cover such topics as: Multiphase Flow Simulation; Bubble and Drop Dynamics; Interface Behaviour; Experimental Measurements; Energy Applications; Compressible Flows; Flow in Porous Media; Turbulent Flow; Image Processing; Heat Transfer; Atomization; Hydromagnetics; Plasma; Fluidised Beds; Cavitation.

Single- and Two-Phase Flow Pressure Drop and Heat Transfer in Tubes by Afshin J. Ghajar Pdf

The book provides design engineers an elemental understanding of the variables that influence pressure drop and heat transfer in plain and micro-fin tubes to thermal systems using liquid single-phase flow in different industrial applications. It also provides design engineers using gas-liquid, two-phase flow in different industrial applications the necessary fundamentals of the two-phase flow variables. The author and his colleagues were the first to determine experimentally the very important relationship between inlet geometry and transition. On the basis of their results, they developed practical and easy to use correlations for the isothermal and non-isothermal friction factor (pressure drop) and heat transfer coefficient (Nusselt number) in the transition region as well as the laminar and turbulent flow regions for different inlet configurations and fin geometry. This work presented herein provides the thermal systems design engineer the necessary design tools. The author further presents a succinct review of the flow patterns, void fraction, pressure drop and non-boiling heat transfer phenomenon and recommends some of the well scrutinized modeling techniques.

SUBTECH ’91 by Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) Pdf

The concept of using flexible, reelable pipe to transport liquids, gases, and vapours is not a new one. As early as the 1940s a steel braided elastomeric pipeline was developed for the Allied Forces in order to transport fuels to support the Normandy Beacheads. In fact, the longest flexible pipeline ever constructed is likely to be that laid across the English Channel as part of 'Operation Pluto'. The methodology used to handle and instal such pipe is also not new. Ellis (1943, London) in an early patent specification identifies three basic objectives for a flexible pipelining method. These are: prefabrication of the pipe onshore; coiling of the pipe on suitable drums or reels; and using such reels to lay pipe from anchored or motorised barges. The design concept for flexible pipe is also not a new invention given that flexible hoses and umbilicals have been in service for more than sixty years. A break-through was however achieved by the French Institute of Petroleum in the early 1970s when they developed an improved steel reinforced pipe structure having a high axial loading capaci ty which utilised corrosion and hydrocarbon resistant polymers to extend pipe service lifetime. This early pipe design utilised established cable making techniques to apply steel armour and axially and radially reinforce alternating layers of polymer sheaths. The pipe was primarily developed as a flowline for use in static seabed applications.

Frontiers in Computational Fluid-Structure Interaction and Flow Simulation by Tayfun E. Tezduyar Pdf

Computational fluid-structure interaction and flow simulation are challenging research areas that bring solution and analysis to many classes of problems in science, engineering, and technology. Young investigators under the age of 40 are conducting much of the frontier research in these areas, some of which is highlighted in this book. The first author of each chapter took the lead role in carrying out the research presented. The topics covered include Computational aerodynamic and FSI analysis of wind turbines, Simulating free-surface FSI and fatigue-damage in wind-turbine structural systems, Aorta flow analysis and heart valve flow and structure analysis, Interaction of multiphase fluids and solid structures, Computational analysis of tire aerodynamics with actual geometry and road contact, and A general-purpose NURBS mesh generation method for complex geometries. This book will be a valuable resource for early-career researchers and students — not only those interested in computational fluid-structure interaction and flow simulation, but also other fields of engineering and science, including fluid mechanics, solid mechanics and computational mathematics – as it will provide them with inspiration and guidance for conducting their own successful research. It will also be of interest to senior researchers looking to learn more about successful research led by those under 40 and possibly offer collaboration to these researchers.
