New Frontiers in Superconductivity Research by Barry P. Martins Pdf

Superconductivity is the ability of certain materials to conduct electrical current with no resistance and extremely low losses. High temperature superconductors, such as La2-xSrxCuOx (Tc=40K) and YBa2Cu3O7-x (Tc=90K), were discovered in 1987 and have been actively studied since. In spite of an intense, world-wide, research effort during this time, a complete understanding of the copper oxide (cuprate) materials is still lacking. Many fundamental questions are unanswered, particularly the mechanism by which high-Tc superconductivity occurs. More broadly, the cuprates are in a class of solids with strong electron-electron interactions. An understanding of such "strongly correlated" solids is perhaps the major unsolved problem of condensed matter physics with over ten thousand researchers working on this topic.

This ability to carry large amounts of current can be applied to electric power devices such as motors and generators, and to electricity transmission in power lines. For example, superconductors can carry as much as 100 times the amount of electricity of ordinary copper or aluminum wires of the same size. Many universities, research institutes and companies are working to develop high-Tc superconductivity applications and considerable progress has been made. This volume brings together leading research in this growth field.

Fundamentals and Frontiers of the Josephson Effect by Francesco Tafuri Pdf

This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date description of the Josephson effect, a topic of never-ending interest in both fundamental and applied physics. In this volume, world-renowned experts present the unique aspects of the physics of the Josephson effect, resulting from the use of new materials, of hybrid architectures and from the possibility of realizing nanoscale junctions. These new experimental capabilities lead to systems where novel coherent phenomena and transport processes emerge. All this is of great relevance and impact, especially when combined with the didactic approach of the book. The reader will benefit from a general and modern view of coherent phenomena in weakly-coupled superconductors on a macroscopic scale. Topics that have been only recently discussed in specialized papers and in short reviews are described here for the first time and organized in a general framework. An important section of the book is also devoted to applications, with focus on long-term, future applications. In addition to a significant number of illustrations, the book includes numerous tables for comparative studies on technical aspects.

Endless Quests: Theory, Experiments And Applications Of Frontiers Of Superconductivity by Jiangdi Fan Pdf

The book is devoted to advancing and developing the frontiers of superconductivity; in particular, the theory of the Diagrammatic Iteration Approach (DIA), described in Chapter 1, is unique in the community of superconductivity. The application of DIA to electron correlation effects has allowed the tough issue of strongly-coupled electron systems to be solved, which is important for high-temperature superconductivity (HTS). DIA, when applied to a layered two-dimensional system, gives rise to marvelous outcomes that can explain all the anomalies in the normal state of HTS, and leads to a transition temperature that is dependent on quantities including the dielectric constant, electron band mass and spacing between layers. This then serves as a quantifiable guide on how to make ideal superconductors. Moreover, in such a scenario, the mechanisms of low- and high-temperature superconductivity can be unified on the basis of repulsive Coulomb interactions between electrons. The book contains rich first-hand information on experiments at the frontiers of superconductivity, as well as on relevant applications of such cutting-edge developments. For instance, Jiasu Wang, co-author of the chapter discussing the HTS Maglev train, is the person who completed the world's first HTS Maglev train. Thus, the draw of this book lies not only in its ability to marry theory, experiment and application, but also in its inclusion of research from prestigious experts of the field.

Frontiers of Materials Research/Electronic And Optical Materials: Volume I is part of a five-volume compilation of the proceedings of C-MRS International 1990 Conference held in Beijing, China. The said conference discusses the areas of research in materials science. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 covers topics involved in the development and progress of materials such as the focused beam ion; intermetallic compounds; polymers; and the application of computers in the field. Part 2 includes studies related to high Tc superconductors such as methods related to the field; the effects of oxygen and partial pressure on the properties of superconducting; and the study of superconductivity and crystallography. Part 3 presents papers related optoelectronic materials and functional crystals, which are mostly about the growth, properties, and uses of the different crystals being studied in each paper. The text is recommended for scientists and engineers who would like to know more about the field of materials science, especially those who would like to be involved in materials research.

Frontiers of Fundamental Physics and Physics Education Research by Burra G. Sidharth,Marisa Michelini,Lorenzo Santi Pdf

In a knowledge-based society, research into fundamental physics plays a vital role not only in the enhancement of human knowledge but also in the development of new technology that affects everyday life. The international symposium series Frontiers of Fundamental Physics (FFP) regularly brings together eminent scholars and researchers working in various areas in physics to exchange expertise, ideas, results, and new research perspectives. The twelfth such symposium, FFP12, took place at the University of Udine, Italy, and covered diverse fields of research: astrophysics, high energy physics and particle physics, theoretical physics, gravitation and cosmology, condensed matter physics, statistical physics, computational physics, and mathematical physics. Importantly, it also devoted a great deal of attention to physics education research, teacher training in modern physics, and popularization of physics. The high scientific level of FFP12 was guaranteed by the careful selection made by scientific coordinators from among 250 submissions from 28 countries across the world. During the three days of the conference, nine general talks were delivered in plenary sessions, 29 invited talks were given in specific topic areas, and 59 oral presentations were made. This book presents a selection of the best contributions at FFP12 with the aim of acquainting readers with the most important recent advances in fundamental physics and in physics education and teacher development.

Frontiers of High-Pressure Research by Hans D. Hochheimer,Richard E. Etters Pdf

The role of high pressure experiments in the discovery of supercon ducting materials with a T. above liquid nitrogen temperature has demon strated the importance of such experiments. The same role holds true in the tailoring of materials for optoelectronic devices. In addition, much progress has been made recently in the search for metallic hydro gen, and the application of high pressure in polymer research has brought forth interesting results. These facts together with the suc cess of previous small size meetings (such as the "First International Conference on the Physics of Solids at High Pressure", held in 1965 in Tucson, Arizona, U. S. A. ; "High Pressure and Low Temperature Physics", held in 1977 in Cleveland, Ohio, U. S. A. ; and "Physics of Solids Under High Pressure", held in 1981 in bad Honnef, Germany), motivated us to organize a workshop with emphasis on the newest results and trends in these fields of high pressure research. Furthermore, it was intended to mix experienced and young scien tists to realize an idea best expressed in a letter by Prof. Weinstein: "I think it is an excellent idea. I have often felt that the number of excellent young researchers in the high pressure field need an opportu nity to put forward their work with due recognition. " Thanks to the support of the key speakers, we were able to achieve this goal and had more than 50\ young participants.

Frontiers in Crystalline Matter by National Research Council,Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences,Board on Physics and Astronomy,Committee for an Assessment of and Outlook for New Materials Synthesis and Crystal Growth Pdf

For much of the past 60 years, the U.S. research community dominated the discovery of new crystalline materials and the growth of large single crystals, placing the country at the forefront of fundamental advances in condensed-matter sciences and fueling the development of many of the new technologies at the core of U.S. economic growth. The opportunities offered by future developments in this field remain as promising as the achievements of the past. However, the past 20 years have seen a substantial deterioration in the United States' capability to pursue those opportunities at a time when several European and Asian countries have significantly increased investments in developing their own capacities in these areas. This book seeks both to set out the challenges and opportunities facing those who discover new crystalline materials and grow large crystals and to chart a way for the United States to reinvigorate its efforts and thereby return to a position of leadership in this field.
