Fundamentals of High School Mathematics by Harold O. Rugg Pdf

Excerpt from Fundamentals of High School Mathematics: A Textbook Designed to Follow Arithmetic The traditional course of study in high school mathematics needs to be completely reconstructed. Five years of intensive investigation have established striking inadequacies in the first-year course: both what we teach and how we teach it. First: more than half of the conventional first-year course will never be used by the vast majority of our pupils. Second: the claims which we make that we are training pupirs "to think intelligently" will be difficult, if not impossible, to substantiate. The very content and organization of the course tends to inhibit this. Most of it provides little or no opportunity for training in "problem-solving." Our courses of study emphasize habit-forination and rote memory, and these courses are almost exactly determined by the textbook. Finally: standardized tests given to more than 100 high schools show clearly that neither in securing formal skill nor in developing powers of analytical thinking is our instruction satisfactory. Striking needs: (1) courses of study based on a clear-cut program; (2) a real psychology of how children learn mathematics, expressed through new types of "wordy" textbooks and manuals of method. Courses must be constructed on principles of social worth and "thinking" outcomes that have been definitely established. Current courses have not been so organized. The slate should be wiped clean and a new course organized on a clear-cut program. No material should be included which cannot be defended either on the basis of social worth, or upon the probability of relatively worth-while thought power. The Essentials of High School Math by Joseph R. Davis Pdf

The Essentials of High School Math was designed to help students learn the basics of mathematics that they are supposed to understand upon entering high school, as well as the fundamental lessons within Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics that students typically learn in ninth and tenth grade. It is specifically intended for students identified as possibly having trouble on an upcoming state-mandated math exam, or for those who have already failed such an exam and must re-take it. The book was created to include everything a student needs to study, practice, and learn the material that any high school student should know. It contains almost 1,000 problems for students to practice, and the lessons themselves contain about 100 questions from actual state exams that are thoroughly explained, along with hundreds of other examples. Each lesson is designed to cover one topic only so that students may learn and thoroughly understand that topic. Whether with the help of a teacher, tutor, parent, or even alone, any student should be able to read through a lesson and have a good understanding of it. The Essentials of High School Math is recommended for any student that needs help with math.

Fundamentals of Mathematics by James Van Dyke,James Rogers,Holli Adams Pdf

The FUNDAMENTALS OF MATHEMATICS, Tenth Edition, offers a comprehensive and objectives-based review of all basic mathematics concepts. The authors prepare students for further coursework by addressing three important student needs: 1) establishing good study habits and overcoming math anxiety, 2) making the connections between mathematics and their modern, day-to-day activities, and 3) being paced and challenged according to their individual level of understanding whether right out of high school or returning to school later in life. The clear exposition and the consistency of presentation make learning arithmetic accessible for all. Key concepts presented in section objectives and further defined within the context of How and Why provide a strong foundation for learning and lasting comprehension. With a predominant emphasis on problem-solving skills, concepts, and applications based on real world data (with some introductory algebra integrated throughout), this book is suitable for individual study or for a variety of course formats: lab, self-paced, lecture, group, or combined formats. Fundamentals of Mathematics by Denny Burzynski,Wade Ellis Pdf

Fundamentals of Mathematics is a work text that covers the traditional study in a modern prealgebra course, as well as the topics of estimation, elementary analytic geometry, and introductory algebra. It is intended for students who: have had previous courses in prealgebra wish to meet the prerequisites of higher level courses such as elementary algebra need to review fundamental mathematical concenpts and techniques This text will help the student devlop the insight and intuition necessary to master arithmetic techniques and manipulative skills. It was written with the following main objectives: to provide the student with an understandable and usable source of information to provide the student with the maximum oppurtinity to see that arithmetic concepts and techniques are logically based to instill in the student the understanding and intuitive skills necessary to know how and when to use particular arithmetic concepts in subsequent material cources and nonclassroom situations to give the students the ability to correctly interpret arithmetically obtained results We have tried to meet these objects by presenting material dynamically much the way an instructure might present the material visually in a classroom. (See the development of the concept of addition and subtraction of fractions in section 5.3 for examples) Intuition and understanding are some of the keys to creative thinking, we belive that the material presented in this text will help students realize that mathematics is a creative subject.
