Passionate Joy by Dr. James Evans McReynolds Pdf

Passionate Joy connects the psychological and spiritual understanding of our least discussed human emotion. This book reflects the dawn of a revolutionary approach to living. Norman Vincent Peale anointed Jim McReynolds as minister of joy to the world. The most important characteristic of a minister of joy is humility. This book teaches people the purpose of our lives is to create an atmosphere for joy and miracles to happen. Life is difficult. Building a wealth of joy enables us to know happiness. Readers will enter the joy of the Lord as they reflect upon their own joy. This book can be used as a text for study groups. Questions for reflections are included at the end of each chapter. This book was envisioned during studies at Vanderbilt University and the University of Oxford in England. The material has been shared during a lifetime of weekend retreats, conferences, and seminars for churches, schools, workplaces, and community groups.

Hope, Joy, and Affection in the Classical World by Ruth R. Caston,Robert A. Kaster Pdf

The emotions have long been an interest for those studying ancient Greece and Rome. But while the last few decades have produced excellent studies of individual emotions and the different approaches to them by the major philosophical schools, the focus has been almost entirely on negative emotions. This might give the impression that the Greeks and Romans had little to say about positive emotion, something that would be misguided. As the chapters in this collection indicate, there are representations of positive emotions extending from archaic Greek poetry to Augustine, and in both philosophical works and literary genres as wide-ranging as lyric poetry, forensic oratory, comedy, didactic poetry, and the novel. Nor is the evidence uniform: while many of the literary representations give expression to positive emotion but also describe its loss, the philosophers offer a more optimistic assessment of the possibilities of attaining joy or contentment in this life. The positive emotions show some of the same features that all emotions do. But unlike the negative emotions, which we are able to describe and analyze in great detail because of our preoccupation with them, positive emotions tend to be harder to articulate. Hence the interest of the present study, which considers how positive emotions are described, their relationship to other emotions, the ways in which they are provoked or upset by circumstances, how they complicate and enrich our relationships with other people, and which kinds of positive emotion we should seek to integrate. The ancient works have a great deal to say about all of these topics, and for that reason deserve more study, both for our understanding of antiquity and for our understanding of the positive emotions in general.

Joy at Birth by Susan Crowther Pdf

To be at the birth of a baby is special, yet there is an increasing secularisation and reliance on technology in contemporary maternity care, particularly in the western context. Through exploration of experiences at birth this book explores joy at birth, which is often ignored and overlooked beyond the activities that help to ensure survival. This book draws on a collection of stories of birth from mothers, birth partners, obstetricians and midwives, that demonstrate joy at birth across professional groups and in different types of births and locations with or without technological interventions. Each chapter introduces stories of joy that highlight embodied, spatial and relational meanings. Employing the Heideggerian notion of a human being, it sketches out an ontological focus that draws our gaze to the everyday taken-for-granted ways of being at birth. Based on phenomenological experiential data and rigorous interpretive analysis underpinned by seminal philosophical writings, this book calls for readers to attend to the wholeness of birth in all situations and at all births in ways not attempted before. It will be of great interest to midwives, and those working in and studying maternity, obstetrics and neonatology, as well as social and medical anthropology, sociology, cultural, organisational and clinical psychology and spirituality.

The Mis-Education of Joy by Paul C. Agard Pdf

The Mis-education of Joy is the story of three lives that intersect one semester in a college classroom and as a result these lives are profoundly changed forever. Joy Hunter is an enthusiastic young girl who shares her faith with everyone. At seventeen, she has always depended on her religious faith to overcome her many obstacles. One of which is a childhood illness that threatened her with no more than fifteen years of life. Upon graduating high school, and being accepted to a local college, Joy for the first time is hopeful about her future. At college, she meets Jim Byrnes, a history professor with a clouded past and a deep rooted contempt for religion. The classroom explodes as Professor Byrnes is challenged by a student named Paul, who the class has labeled "the fanatic," and Joy's faith is put to a new test. Fearing her "light" is growing dim because of her doubt, Joy finds herself searching for answers; but who will she turn to and where is the unseen hand of God that watched over her for 17 years? As Joy, Professor Brynes and Paul seek to separate fact from fiction, they each encounter grace. Told in traditional dialogue form, The Mis-education of Joy is a heartwarming tale that explores the rightsof the believer in a secular society, while showing the role of the believer in a secular society. An insightful story that dares to expose the religious intolerance of our nation; but yet is powerful enough to touch your heart. Highly recommended. -Rev. Dr. Walter L. Davis III It is a true page turner that reminds us that faith persists not because we will it; but because it has a presence and force all of its own. The Miseducation of Joy is long overdue. -Gaelle Affiany, Graduate Student Critics will be challenged and Christians will be encouraged to know that the Word of God is believable and trustworthy. -Myra Rosa, High School Science Teacher

Joy by Patricia Ruggiero Pdf

Joy - A Message for All the Children of God is a modern day parable about a bright yellow sunflower named Joy who unselfishly shares the mystery of her joyful life with all of her faded flower friends who will listen to her message. Joy's author, Patricia Ruggiero, conveys through story how the hopeless can be filled with everlasting joy. So Sad called, 'Wait for me ' as he stretched and stretched and stretched, higher and higher and higher. All of a sudden, with almost a pop, So Sad's faded-blue petals burst into bright yellow light, as he realized the warmth soaking into his petals, down his green stem and into his very roots, which were planted deep down in the dark dirt of the garden. So Sad called over to Joy, 'I am enjoying the warmth of the Sun ' Joy smiled back at him, bowed her blossom and proclaimed peacefully, 'I knew you could. I knew you would.' Joy - A Message for All the Children of God opens conversations between adults and children about God.

An Ode to Joy by Erica Brown,Shira Weiss Pdf

Before his rather sudden passing in 2020, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks was one of the most eloquent and influential religious leaders of the generation. As Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth for over two decades, he offered a universal message cultivated from the Jewish and Western cannons he knew so well. One concept that figured prominently in his work was joy. “I think of Judaism as an ode to joy,” he once wrote. “Like Beethoven, Jews have known suffering, isolation, hardship, and rejection, yet they never lacked the religious courage to rejoice.” In this volume, organized by the Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks-Herenstein Center for Values and Leadership, academics and writers explore the significance of joy within the Jewish tradition. These essays and reflections discuss traditional Jewish primary sources, including Biblical, Rabbinic and Hebrew literature, Jewish history and philosophy, education, the arts, and positive psychology, and of course, through the prism of Lord Sacks’ work.
