Meanwhile, Lexy is threatened by the vile professor Jupiter Peacock and Wolf embarks on a perilous journey to find his missing sister. And back at school, Neptune the cat is bored. He’s used to lording over the other stray cats, but they’ve all mysteriously vanished. Where could they be—and how will he find them? The World of the Galloglass by Seán Duffy Pdf

This volume contains the proceedings of a recent Edinburgh conference at which scholars discussed the intersection of Scottish and Irish politics and culture in the later Middle Ages. It was a world epitomized by the neglected figure of the galloglass and several of the papers explore the role of these West Highland dynasties and their rapid proliferation throughout Ireland from the late thirteenth century onwards, but the volume also examines the high politics of Scottish royal involvement in Ireland, and the common culture of Gaeldom, particularly as manifested in the corpus of surviving bardic verse. Contributors include: Steve Boardman, David Caldwell, Alison Cathcart, Seán Duffy, David Edwards, Wilson McLeod, Kenneth Nicholls, Alasdair Ross, Katharine Simms, and Alex Woolf.

The Scottish Soldier Abroad, 1247-1967 by Grant G. Simpson Pdf

This collection of twelve essays presents historical approaches to the lives of the variety of Scots who fought overseas from the 13th to the 20th century. Topics include: Scots in medieval Ireland; the Scots fighting as part of the 'Auld Alliance' with France in the 15th and 16th centuries; Scots active in warfare in early modern Russia; a Scottish NCO who was in Marlborough's wars and recorded his adventures in an autobiography; a shrewd colonial governor in early 18th-century America; Scottish military experiences in India; soldiers in Romantic fiction, especially Scott's Quentin Durward; the camp and barrack-room life of Scottish regiments in the 19th century; Scots in the Spanish Civil War; and Scottish soldiers as part of the final decades of the British Empire. While set against a military background, these studies also aim to investigate the social contexts in which Scottish soldiers functioned in many lands during a period of seven centuries. This volume is the second in a new series, the Mackie Monographs, based on the Mackie Symposia held in the University of Aberdeen, which have as their theme the historical study of Scotland's overseas links.

Galloglass 1250–1600 by Fergus Cannan Braniff Pdf

Galloglass, from the Gaelic gall_glaigh for 'young foreign warriors', were mercenaries from the Western Isles of Scotland who fought in the retinues of Irish magnates from the mid-13th century until the early 17th century. Without question, galloglass are among the most visually impressive warriors of all time: they were sketched by Albrecht D_rer, were mentioned by Shakespeare, and were discussed with awe and amazement in the correspondence of all the leading Elizabethan soldiers who served in Ireland. Thousands fought in Ireland, and yet so far there has been only one detailed account of the galloglass, and this work concentrates on the clan and family structures of the galloglass, and not their experience as warriors. This book provides the first detailed military history of these fearsome warriors.

Galloglas by John Marsden Pdf

Galloglas were mercenary warriors from the Hebrides and West Highlands who settled in Ireland in the later 13th century and achieved an extraordinary prominence on Irish battlefields throughout the three hundred years following. Fighting as heavy infantry - highly-disciplined, mail-armoured and wielding their characteristic weapon of the long-staved war-axe - they were the decisive military component in the Gaelic Irish resurgence of the 14th century and represented the cutting-edge of resistance to Tudor reconquest two hundred years later. Found first in the service of native Irish lords in Ulster and Connacht, they were later brought into Munster and Leinster by the gaelicised Anglo-Irish earls. By the 15th century they were established as Ireland's first professional warrior class and, like other professional classes in the Gaelic world, they were organized on the basis of kin-group. The names of hereditary commanders of galloglas entered in the Irish annals identify these mercenary warrior kindreds as the MacCabes, MacDonnels, MacDowells, MacRorys, MacSheehys and MacSweeneys, all of them families descended from the Gaelic-Norse aristocracy of Argyll and the Isles - and yet their story has been called "a forgotten chapter of West Highland history". This account of the Galloglas is written from a decidedly Scottish perspective, tracing the origins of six kindreds and investigating the circumstances which brought about their relocation to Ireland. It goes on to examine the galloglas as warriors, pointing to their distinctly Norse character and proposing their battle-fury as "the last unmistakable echo of the Scandinavian impact on the Celtic west".
