The Gangster Film by Ron Wilson Pdf

This volume examines the gangster film in its historical context with an emphasis on the ways the image of the gangster has adapted and changed as a result of socio-cultural circumstances. From its origins in Progressive-era reforms to its use as an indictment of corporate greed, the gangster film has often provided a template for critiquing American ideas and values concerning individualism, success, and business acumen. The gangster genre has also been useful in critically examining race and ethnicity in American culture in terms of "otherness." Films studied include Musketeers of Pig Alley (1912), The Racket (1928), The Captive City (1952), The Godfather, Part Two (1974), Goodfellas (1990), and Killing Them Softly (2012).

Twentieth-Century Drama Dialogue as Ordinary Talk by Susan Mandala Pdf

In this book, Susan Mandala offers a series of in-depth investigations into how the dialogue of four modern plays 'works' with respect to the pragmatic and discoursal norms postulated for ordinary conversation. After an account of the often-heated debates between linguists and critics concerning the analysis of drama dialogue as talk, four plays are considered: Harold Pinter's The Homecoming, Arnold Wesker's Roots, Terence Rattigan's In Praise of Love, and Alan Ayckbourn's Just Between Ourselves. For readers unfamiliar with linguistic approaches to talk, a chapter outlining the major frameworks used in the analysis of the plays is also included. By considering both linguistic and literary perspectives, this book extends the boundaries of traditional criticism and shows how the linguistic study of conversation can contribute to our understanding of dramatic dialogue.

Unfit: Jewish Degeneration and Modernism by Marilyn Reizbaum Pdf

An obsession with “degeneration” was a central preoccupation of modernist culture at the start of the 20th century. Less attention has been paid to the fact that many of the key thinkers in “degeneration theory” – including Cesare Lombroso, Max Nordau, and Magnus Hirschfeld – were Jewish. Unfit: Jewish Degeneration and Modernism is the first in-depth study of the Jewish cultural roots of this strand of modernist thought and its legacies for modernist and contemporary culture. Marilyn Reizbaum explores how literary works from Bram Stoker's Dracula, through James Joyce's Ulysses to Pat Barker's Regeneration trilogy, the crime movies of Mervyn LeRoy, and the photography of Claude Cahun and Adi Nes manifest engagements with ideas of degeneration across the arts of the 20th century. This is a major new study that sheds new light on modernist thought, art and culture.

Be Saved! by Timothy E. Herring Pdf

God is crying out loud for his people. Thousands upon thousands of his children are dying unsaved! Our gangsters, our wayward teens, our ex-prisoners, and our young adults belong to God. They belong to us also. All is ours! We must face the blame. We created them. We created conditions that produced them. We shut down the mandatory military draft, the one sure way of teaching self-discipline, self-restraint, obedience, and responsibility to young adults prior to adulthood. Our Industrial Revolution paled in the light of the Technological Revolution, where high-paying apprenticeships and other jobs were given to robotics; one robot replaced twenty hard-working men with large families. Most of the remaining manufacturing jobs were shipped abroad, and the Industrial Revolution mud-bottomed out. Fast-food jobs were unable to support their families. We took away the industrial schools for delinquents who had large families; we gave these schools to the robotically displaced. Delinquents were pushed into jobs that could not support families. We made shotgun weddings disappear, so did the fathers. Where did they all go? They didnt go. They were pushed into the streets to survive. Pimps, drug dealers, confidence scammers, strong-arm robbers, gangsters, and identity thieves became the order of the day. Time is running out! The same thousands upon thousands of our wayward teenagers, gangsters, ex-prisoners, and young adults are falling through the cracks. Baby-killing spirits, seducing spirits, spirits of witchcraft, and spirits of divination are operating without walls in the metropolitan areas of the United States. This is of great concern to all saved people. We all recognize it, speak of it, and desire to do something about it. The task to overcome is so great we dont know where to begin! Some has even given up, referring to it as the Signs of the Times. We continue to do our church thing. We continue to do our televangelists thing. We continue to do our international thing. We continue to strive for bigness. All of these is vitally important and must continue. But more is needed that speaks directly to gangsters, wayward teens, ex-prisoners, and young adults. More effort is needed to get their souls saved. If they come during the street ministrys call, thats great. We say we love you. But we will not call you directly to be saved.

Gangster Warlords by Ioan Grillo Pdf

"Without this testimony, we simply cannot grasp what is going on . . . Americans would do well to read [Gangster Warlords]." --The New York Times Book Review, Editor's Choice From the author of El Narco, the shocking story of the men at the heads of cartels throughout Latin America: what drives them, what sustains their power, and how they might be brought down. In a ranch south of Texas, the man known as The Executioner dumps five hundred body parts in metal barrels. In Brazil's biggest city, a mysterious prisoner orders hit-men to gun down forty-one police officers and prison guards in two days. In southern Mexico, a meth maker is venerated as a saint while enforcing Old Testament justice on his enemies. A new kind of criminal kingpin has arisen: part CEO, part terrorist, and part rock star, unleashing guerrilla attacks, strong-arming governments, and taking over much of the world's trade in narcotics, guns, and humans. What they do affects you now--from the gas in your car, to the gold in your jewelry, to the tens of thousands of Latin Americans calling for refugee status in the U.S. Gangster Warlords is the first definitive account of the crime wars now wracking Central and South America and the Caribbean, regions largely abandoned by the U.S. after the Cold War. Author of the critically acclaimed El Narco, Ioan Grillo has covered Latin America since 2001 and gained access to every level of the cartel chain of command in what he calls the new battlefields of the Americas. Moving between militia-controlled ghettos and the halls of top policy-makers, Grillo provides a disturbing new understanding of a war that has spiraled out of control--one that people across the political spectrum need to confront now.

Email Marketing by Mary R. Butler Pdf

The inherent power of email marketing is the permission the consumer has given you to communicate with them. Commercials are put on mute. Banner ads are closed or ignored. People are somewhat of a captive audience to radio advertising-if they're not listening to downloaded MP3s and podcasts. The world is tired of commercials-unless they invite them. Yet e-mail marketing allows the entrepreneur to do so much more than give a commercial. In fact you, the marketer, can't afford to do anything of the sort if you want to maintain a list and actually sell from it. You have to understand that you are essentially opening a dialogue with your consumer. They are giving you the opportunity to let them get to know you, not just your product. I. The Press Gang by Godfrey Cheshire,Matt Zoller Seitz,Armond White Pdf

A dialogue about cinema's legacy and best directors through essays by three of the best long-form critics out there, collected from the legendary NYPress for the first time. Comprising of the kind of long-form criticism that is all too rare these days, the weekly film columns in the NYPress included polemics, reviews, interviews, festival reports and features. A far cry from what is often derisively termed the "consumer report" mode of criticism, Cheshire, Seitz and White were passionately engaged with the film culture of both their own time, and what had come before. They constituted three distinctly different voices: equally accomplished, yet notably individual, perspectives on cinema. Their distinctive tastes and approaches were often positioned in direct dialogue with each other, a constant critical conversation that frequently saw each writer directly challenging his colleagues. Dialogue is important in criticism, and here you can find a healthy example of it existing under one proverbial roof. This three-way dialogue between Cheshire, Seitz and White assesses the 1990s in cinema, along with pieces on New York's vibrant repertory scene that allow us to read the authors' takes on directors such as Hitchcock, Lean, Kubrick, Welles, Fassbinder and Bresson; as well as topics such as the legacy of Star Wars, film noir, early film projection in New York City, the New York Film Critics Circle, Sundance, the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and the emerging cinema of Iran and Taiwan.

Disrespected Neighbo(u)rs by Uwe Zagratzki Pdf

Neighbourly relations frequently position a “self” against an “Other”. This is the case for both individuals and nations, and, indeed, within the various cultural groups of a nation. Our racial, ethnic, social, or gender identities are often created in demarcating ourselves by stereotyping the Other. Disrespect of the immediate neighbour based on stereotypical pre-conceptions and cultural biases may lie dormant for a long time and then, as shown in recent conflicts around the globe, suddenly surface due to changed economic and political conditions. Media, including films and fictional as well as non-fictional texts, feature prominently in producing, propagating, and maintaining cultural difference and stereotypes in ideologically effective ways. This volume analyses re-presentations from various angles, as it comprises articles dealing with ethnic groups and neighbo(u)rhoods from three world areas, as well as genres and media instrumental to their respective cultural stereotyping. This focus on literary and media representations of the neighbo(u)rly Other from miscellaneous cultural environments results in a comprehensive understanding of analogies and differences in the mechanisms of production and perception of stereotypes. Addressing the manifold discourses at the heart of stereotyping the familiar Other, the book also points to their far-reaching repercussions on lived cultural practices.
