It is the 1940s as Garrison Yokum grows up in Betsy Layne, Kentucky. He enjoys sitting on the back porch with his cousins, watching trains haul coal to big cities, dreaming of what lies beyond the mountains, and traveling along the “big road,” also known as US Route 23, with his parents on Saturdays. But when Garrison is seven, work becomes even more difficult, dangerous, and precarious for his coal miner father, setting into motion a chain of events that ultimately leads them to Ann Arbor, Michigan, for a new life. From that point on, Route 23 becomes a focal point in Garrison’s life. Decades later and now approaching retirement, Garrison makes another life-changing decision as he nears completion of a documentary on the migration of families from rural east Kentucky to the cities along Route 23. After he sets out on a road trip with his professional photographer granddaughter and two student interns, Garrison explores and captures life along the long, important American highway that helped many families secure better futures beyond the mountains of southern Appalachia. The Big Road is a generational story that documents the experiences of those who migrated from southern Appalachia to bigger cities in the north by way of a memorable American highway.
"I didn’t start out to be a private eye. I thought I was gonna be a secretary–get my boss his java in the morning, take letters, and so on. Hell, I didn’t get my degree in steno to put my life on the line. It was true I wanted an interesting job, but that I’d end up a PI myself . . . it never entered my mind." New York, 1943. Almost anything in pants has gone to serve Uncle Sam in the war–including Woody Mason, the head of a detective agency in midtown Manhattan. Left to run the show is his secretary, Faye Quick, who signed on to be a steno, not a shamus. At twenty-six and five foot four, there’s not much to Faye, but she’s got moxie–which she’ll need when she stumbles over a dead girl in the street and takes on her first murder case. This victim wasn’t any ordinary girl. Claudette West was a student at NYU and the daughter of a Park Avenue family. Faye, who lives in bohemian Greenwich Village–where no one cares how you look–ventures uptown, where people care enough about money to kill for it. Claudette’s father is convinced greed was the motive, and that Claudette’s working-class boyfriend, Richard Cotten, killed the girl because she threw him off the gravy train. Faye, however, isn’t so sure, not when she learns about all the other men Claudette was secretly seeing–from her lecherous literature professor to an apparent con artist. For Faye, there are more shocking surprises in store than turns and dips in the Coney Island Cyclone. Going after the bad guys and fighting a good fight on the home front, Faye is as scrappy and endearing as any character Sandra Scoppettone has ever created, and This Dame for Hire’s period setting is rendered so real you can hear the big band music, see the nylons and fedoras, and feel the rumble of the Third Avenue El. When it comes to an irresistible detective and a riveting new series, you must remember this: Here’s looking at Faye Quick.

This book presents the texts of five plays, collectively written and performed during the years 1973 to 1976 by the Newfoundland theatre troupe CODCO. CODCO's satiric plays expose universal perversity, ignorance, prejudice and abuse with the ironic wit of the people of Newfoundland. The plays are distinguished by their graveyard or gallows humour. CODCO played an important role in the evolution of Canadian theatre and is an early signifier of Canada's attainment of cultural maturity. CODCO's current weekly television series commenced broadcasting in 1988.
Donning false bravado, Decklin stepped to the side of the lectern, descended three steps, then took his place smack dab in front of everyone. “Good morning—I’m Decklin Kilgarry!” Scanning their faces, he wondered why anyone might know his name—the most they probably knew about him was what they read in the class description, and that wasn’t much. Still, it was enough. “Since you’re in my class, I’m going to assume you’re interested in crime. Solving crimes. Murder . . .” When Decklin Kilgarry decided to accept an adjunct professorship at a prestigious, East Coast university, he never imagined he'd be embroiled in a mystery staged to challenge the most brilliant criminal minds. Nor did he think he might in a murderer's crosshairs . . . Faith Wood's Masterclass invites readers into the world of theatre, offering an intriguing glance into what is real, and what is fiction shaded with duplicitous drama.
“In The Nick of Time” is the author’s second novel in his Nick Black, P.I. trilogy. It is set in Los Angeles in 1944. With a war on, people were being squeezed by rationing so The Boys overseas could survive the Nips and Nazis who had a head start toward their goal of conquering the world. Then, the murders started and Black found himself being sucked into the vortex against his will. Sometimes, you didn’t get the easy ones. At least, he seldom did.
I was born in Klerksdorp, a mining town in the North West Province of South Africa. After High School I completed my Tertiary studies at the Potchefstroom University, where I obtained a B. A. Degree, as well as a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education to become a teacher. While teaching, I studied part-time and obtained an Honors Degree, and later a Masters Degree in Afrikaans. When I moved to Mafikeng from Klerksdorp, I completed a Doctorate with a study on the Haiku in Afrikaans at the University of North West. I recently retired after being a teacher for 31 years. Just before retiring I was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration, which meant I could no longer work as a teacher. And I was also diagnosed with Psoriasis on my hands and feet, which meant that I have to use a wheelchair most of the time. In spite of these conditions I was determined to still do something. Thats why I started writing. My motto in life is: there are only two ways to go. Go down, or go on. I made a decision to go on.
