Gathering Noise from My Life by Donald Anderson Pdf

The noise gathered from a lifetime of engaging with war, race, religion, memory, illness, and family echoes through the vignettes, quotations, graffiti, and poetry that Donald Anderson musters here, fragments of the humor and horror of life, the absurdities that mock reason and the despair that yields laughter. Gathering Noise from My Life offers sonic shards of a tune at once jaunty and pessimistic, hopeful and hopeless, and a model for how we can make sense of the scraps of our lives. “We are where we’ve been and what we’ve read,” the author says, and gives us his youth in Montana, the family tradition of boxing, careers in writing and fighting, the words of Mike Tyson, Frederick the Great, Fran Lebowitz, and Shakespeare. In his camouflaged memoir, the award-winning short-story writer cobbles together the sources of the vision of life he has accrued as a consequence of his six decades of living and reading.

God's Gift by Dorothy B. Cole Pdf

As the author read through the oft-repeated, handwritten pages of Ione Davidson, wife of the first Pastor of South Shores Church, handed to her by the church organist, Doris Swanson, she wondered, "Was this church really God's Gift to those who attended or visited?" This, as a reader, you will have to decide for yourself. With the Cole's family involvement in founding and two sons becoming pastors of the church, the author believed it was a worthy project. Her writing began at Los Angeles High School where she composed programs for a literary club and an article winning first place prize for the school annual. At First Baptist in Pomona, she wrote articles for the "Communicator Prayer Corner" and high school lessons for a Sunday school class she was teaching. With her husband, Dr. Edward B. Cole, who served as the senior pastor five churches, they ministered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, San Diego, Pomona (First Baptist Pomona, largest American Baptist Church), Lake Arrowhead (as pastor and "Resident President" of the Campus Crusade's International School of Theology), then South Shores Baptist Church in Monarch Beach, California. During five years there a new parking lot and sanctuary were built. After retiring he was named "Pastor Emeritus." Her employment began at aircraft companies during the Second World War, Douglas Aircraft and Lockheed Aircraft and Budd Manufacturing in Philadelphia. Besides working in Graphic Arts at the California Baptist Seminary, her last position was legal secretary for William Bergman, the City Attorney of Claremont, CA. After supporting her husband through college, seminary and doctrinal classes, she returned to college after her four children were older and in school. The author believes some of God's greatest gifts have been, not only this special church, but her four children, ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. God's gifts for those who love Him in return seem never-ending!

Sappho by Nancy Freedman Pdf

In this finely drawn portrait, Sappho of Lesbos narrates her extraordinary life, from her childhood in war-torn Mitylene to her later relentless search for passionate love. Driven by the all-consuming fever of her Muse-inspired poetic gift, Sappho leads the reader on a journey that is at once turbulent and divine, desperate and sensuous. With breathtaking lucidity and great leaps of imagination, Nancy Freedman shows us a Sappho we have never known -- and one we will never forget. The toast of kings for her verse, Sappho was also a shrewd businesswoman, an educator, an advocate of women's equality, and a rebel who was banished from her island home. Remembering her solely as a lesbian icon reveals only one aspect of her multifaceted personality. Here, finally, Nancy Freedman gives us the complete Sappho. She was arguably the most accomplished lyric poet of the ancient world, but her writing was all but destroyed by the early Church. Only in this century have fragments been uncovered, so that we too may glimpse the force of this strangely enigmatic woman. Contradictory in nature, she inspired equally passionate adoration and loathing; her fame brought her a series of obsessive loves. Her relations with women are well known, but it was for the love of a man that she set sail to face her destiny.

A Gathering of Promises by Ben Graham Pdf

A Gathering of Promises is a history of acid rock and psychedelic music in and from the state of Texas, focusing largely on its mid-1960s origins with the 13th Floor Elevators and contemporaries such as the Golden Dawn, the Red Crayola and Bubble Puppy, and following its development to the present day and the popularity of the annual Austin Psych Fest. Grounded in a strong social, cultural and historical context, the book asks how Texas produced some of the most extreme and influential psych of any era despite a prevailing social ethos of Christian conservatism and the strictest drug laws of any American state. It looks at how this environment shaped and affected the music, alongside the Texan frontier spirit and its championing of expansion, freedom and individualism.
