Gauguin by Himself Handbook by Paul Gauguin Pdf

GAUGUIN BY HIMSELF is the first publication to give equal weight to the full range of Gauguin's activities both as an artist and a writer. His letters, including many to fellow painters such as Pissarro and Van Gogh, comment freely on contemporaries such as Cezanne, Monet and Degas, and meet head on the changing aesthetic concerns of avant-garde Paris in the last two decades of the nineteenth century. They also chart his increasingly hazardous travels around the globe in pursuit of his elusive idea of the 'primitive' from Paris and Copenhagen to Brittany, Provence, Panama, the West Indies and finally the South Pacific. Illustrated with over 200 of his most powerful and decorative works of art, GAUGUIN BY HIMSELF offers a fresh look at the diverse faces and talents of a man who chose to live outside the bounds of society in order to fulfil his vocation as a 'great artist'.

Paul Gauguin by Sandra Forty Pdf

Gauguin's paintings are redolent of the South Sea islands, full of exotic women, vibrant flora, and brilliant color. In addition, his scenes range from normal life in France's Brittany, to Provence where he painted and lived briefly with Vincent van Gogh, to French Polynesia. Eugne Henri Paul Gauguin was born in Paris on June 7, 1848. After Napolon III became the president of France, Gauguin's family left for Peru in December 1849. They remained there four years at which point they returned to Paris. An early exposure to a non-European lifestyle and culture undoubtedly opened Gauguin's mind to his later fascination with the Caribbean and with Tahiti and the peoples of those islands he portrayed so eloquently. Gauguin, a banker, started painting in his spare time. He never had any formal art training but set about painting as a hobby with commendable amateur skill. His first paintings were inspired by Corot and the Barbizon School and featured romantic-naturalist subject matter. He soon aligned himself with the Impressionists, but is now labeled by art historians as a Post-Impressionist. Gauguin called himself a Synthesist. His technique was often called Cloisonnisme.

"Paul Gauguin is among one of the most popular artists of the Modern period. His lush, colorful works created a stir within the art world at the turn of the century and helped form the basis for Modern painting. Gauguin's unconventional lifestyle brought him to experience rural Brittany, Panama, Martinique, Tahiti, and later, the Marquesas Islands. His travels inspired some of the most exquisite and paradisiacal visions in painting."--Amazon.

Gauguin by Belinda Thomson Pdf

Paul Gauguin achieved a high public profile during his lifetime, and was one of the first artists of his generation to achieve international recognition. But his prominence has always had as much to do with the dramatic events of his life - his self-imposed exile on a remote South Sea island, his turbulent relationships with his peers - as with the appeal of his art. Belinda Thomson gives a comprehensive and accessible account of the life and work of one of the most original artists of the late 19th century. Gauguin's work - painting, sculpture, prints and ceramics - is discussed in the light of his public persona, his relations with his contemporaries, his exhibitions and their critical reception. Belinda Thomson reveals Gauguin's private world, beliefs and aspirations through his extensive cache of journals, letters and other writings. Fully updated throughout, drawing on the insights of thirty years of scholarship since its first edition, Thomson's text remains the best introduction of this controversial and often contradictory artist.
