Thomas Rutherfoord (1766-1852) emigrated in 1784 from Scotland to Richmond, Virginia, as representative for the mercantile firm of Hawksley and Rutherfoord of Dublin, Ireland. Thomas sold the goods he brought, returned to Ireland to settle accounts and become a partner, and then returned to Richmond in 1789. In 1790 he married Sarah Winston. Descendants (chiefly spelling the surname Rutherford) and relatives lived in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, California, Washington and elsewhere. Includes much ancestry and relatives in Scotland, and some in Ireland, England, India and elsewhere in the British empire.

The Rutherfords in Britain by Anonim Pdf

The senior family located in Scotland, held Rutherford in Roxburgshire by (c.1200). Later, the family lost Rutherford c.1500, but kept Edgerston, near Jedburgh until 1915. Another line called of Chatto and Hunthill near Jedburgh went back to the early fifteenth century. A third line, of Hundalee near Jedburgh also went back to the fifteenth century. Another family was located at Aberdeen by the mid fourteenth century. A branch was located in England at Rudchester in Northumberland, near Newcastle upon Tyne. It was acquired by marriage to an heiress soon after 1400 and lasted into the late seventeenth century. Possible descendants were left locally in Yorkshire and Derbyshire. Another branch located at Middleton Hall near Wooler in Northumberland, also was gained by an heiress marriage soon after 1400. Several pedigree charts trace lineages for the various lines.
