Gleanings of a Long Life (Classic Reprint) by Georgiana Bloomfield Pdf

Excerpt from Gleanings of a Long Life In offering these gleanings OF A long life to my readers, I am influenced by the one desire to call their attention, or it may be, to recall to their memory, thoughts, sentiments, and feelings which have often afforded me both pleasure and instruction. Some of the extracts have never been published, others, though well-known, can hardly be too often read, and so without further explanation or apology, I cast my bread upon the waters. Sixty Years Gleanings From Life's Harvest by John Brown Pdf

Excerpt from Sixty Years Gleanings From Life's Harvest: A Genuine Autobiography It has been my lot to figure in curious and stirring scenes, and to acquire practical experience of various phases in human existence. But it is only within the last few years that I have been permitted to enjoy occasional hours of unalloyed leisure. Thus, although the idea had often occurred to me that sundry passages of my life might be so embodied in a pen-and-ink sketch, as to be presentable to the public, - it was not until lately that I attempted to realise my thought Neither was I, even then, so enamoured of my own conceptions as to have prosecuted the task seriously, - had I not received unexpected encouragement to do so. I refer to the kind approbation bestowed upon my earliest efforts, by several friends - far more accustomed than myself to judging of such matters, - to whom certain portions of my MS. were from time to time submitted. Their opinion confirmed my own belief that many of the incidents I should have to relate, possessed a natural and inherent interest, - which the narrator's shortcomings could not altogether neutralise. But to affect the style and title of a 'contributor to literature' would be, indeed, a foolish ambition in me; for these memoirs will sufficiently indicate that all regular instruction ceased, in my case, at ten years old. Gleanings (Classic Reprint) by James Kittredge Lombard Pdf

Excerpt from Gleanings The Voice. "Write!" said the Voice, "all the truths of thy vision, That which is coming, and that which hath been;" "Nay," said the seer, "the meaning is hidden, How shall sense fathom what spirit hath seen?" "The spirit gives life, though the letter destroys; Silence were sinful; - write!" said the Voice. "Speak!" said the Voice, "if the word hath come to thee, Go thou to Nineveh, utter thy cry;" "Nay," said the prophet, "the message were fruitless, Who will regard such a babbler as I?" "He who hath called thee His chosen employs; Silence were fatal; - speak!" said the Voice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Gleanings From Life's Wayside (Classic Reprint) by Herman Smith Alshouse Pdf

Excerpt from Gleanings From Life's Wayside I've bidden the world adieu to-day, And, leaving my burdens all behind, Happy and free to the woods I stray To find a balm for my fevered mind, And to read in the book divine. In the woods is a pleasant spot I know, Where the dark green ferns and the daisies hide; Where the pure white flowers of laurel blow The maple and hemlock and birch beside, And a brooklet murmurs near. Up in a Skyward maple branch A warbler carols forever unseen, And the oven-bird, like an avalanche, Poureth his song through the leafy screen In a climax loud and clear. The woodthrush's ringing, silvery tone Chaseth the remnants of care 's alloy, And I think that Eden has never flown With nothing forbidden I taste its joy, Mid no tempter need me allure. Gleanings from Fifty Years in China (Classic Reprint) by Archibald John Little Pdf

Excerpt from Gleanings From Fifty Years in China It was while engaged in his earlier trips on the Upper Yangtse that Mr. Little collected material for the inter esting book (published in 1888) entitled Through the Yangtse Gorges, which established his reputation as a graphic and sympathetic writer on China. This was followed some years later (1901) by Mount Omi and Beyond, which introduced us to the little-known region of Szechuan on the Thibetan Border and to a phase of Chinese life, untouched as yet by foreign intercourse, which his linguistic acquirements and experience enabled him to depict with the perception and sense of humour that had delighted his readers in the previous work. Gleanings From a Literary Life by Francis Bowen Pdf

Excerpt from Gleanings From a Literary Life: 1838-1880 The Essay upon Classical and Utilitarian Studies is an attempt to prove that the proper end and aim of the higher education, which is sought within the walls of a University or a College, is not to impart useful information, which is best obtained from Scientific, Technical, and Professional Schools, but to develop the intellect and form the character by those liberal stud ies and scholastic exercises for the promotion of which Universities were first instituted. The papers upon Political Economy are almost exclusively devoted to pointing out the serious evils which menace the peace of society and the safety of property and trade, through tampering with the standard of value and the pub lic credit by reckless experiments with the currency, and by permitting the enormous increase of national and municipal debt which has marked the financial history of the civilized world during the present century. Gleanings After Time by George Latimer Apperson Pdf

Excerpt from Gleanings After Time: Chapters in Social and Domestic History In all magazines and periodical publications, amid much that is ephemeral and necessarily of but momentary interest, there are always articles which are of more or less permanent value. Yet, unless they are separately collected by their authors, such contributions are lost and buried for ever in the bound volumes of the magazine in which they appeared; and a set of magazine volumes is one of the least often disturbed of literary cemeteries. If this be true of contributions to the ordinary run of magazines, it is still more true of articles in specialized and quasi-scientific periodicals. During the more than a quarter of a century of The Antiquary's existence a very large number of papers of much more than passing or "topical" interest have appeared in the pages of its forty odd volumes. A few of these have been collected by their writers, but the bulk of them - especially those in the earlier volumes of the magazine - are not now so easily accessible as they deserve to be. It has been thought well, therefore, to collect, chiefly from the earlier volumes of The Antiquary, some of these papers, which, on account of their interest or permanent value, deserve to be preserved in a convenient and handy form. The importance of classification has been kept in view, and the present volume contains a selection of articles which may fairly be grouped under the heading of "Social History." Other volumes may follow under other headings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Gleanings of the Gloamin (Classic Reprint) by John Ramsay Pdf

Excerpt from Gleanings of the Gloamin John Ramsay, the subject of the following brief life-sketch, first drew the breath of life in "Auld Killie," in the year 1802. Whether or not the "genius of misfortune" presided, as he himself says it did, at his birth, we do not pretend to say. Surely not. Misfortunes come to us much of our own making, and not from the accident of our birth or anything connected therewith. And though John has passed through not a few misfortunes, probably were cause and effect traced thoroughly, in these the genius referred to, would be found to have had little share in them. His parents were in humble circumstances, yet possessed of those sterling qualities which make the Scotch peasantry take such a high position among the inhabitants of Britain, and those of Ayrshire so high among Scotchmen. His father especially, was a man of superior mental and moral powers, and exercised, by his industry, and sterling integrity, a great influence over John's mind and character. He was one of the shrewdest of business men, had great forethought in all trading matters, and could discern the signs of the times equally with any one. Gleanings in the Fields of Art (Classic Reprint) by Ednah Dow Littlehale Cheney Pdf

Excerpt from Gleanings in the Fields of Art The simpler and nearer to Nature daily life is, the easier it is for Use to take on the conditions of Beauty. The wig wam of the savage, the cottage of the peasant, are more often picturesque to the eye than the abode of the wealthy citizen. The bow and arrow of the Indian, the spear of the hunter, are far more picturesque than Colt's pistol or Sharp's ri e. Long ages have simplified it to this form of beauty. So we find a great charm in the common utensils of the older nations, especially of the Etruscans, whose very cook ing-pans seem to be poetic. Excerpt from The Aftermath; Or Gleanings From a Busy Life: Called Upon the Outer Cover, for Purposes of Sale, Caliban's Guide to Letters Before ten he would be in his study, seated at a large mahogany bureau, formerly the property of Sir Charles Henby, of North-chapel, and noon would still find him there, writing in his regular and legible hand the notes and manuscripts which have made him famous, or poring over an encyclopaedia, the more conscientiously to review some book with which he had been entrusted. Studies of Plant Life in Canada by Mrs. Catherine Parr Traill Pdf

Excerpt from Studies of Plant Life in Canada: Or Gleanings From Forest, Lake and Plain There is a common little weed that is known by the familiar name of Carpetweed, a small Polygonum, that grows at our doors and often troubles us to root up, from its persevering habits and wiry roots. It is crushed by the foot and bruised, but springs again as if unharmed beneath our tread, and ourishes under all circumstances, however adverse. This little plant had lessons to teach me, and gave courage when trials pressed hard upon me. The simplest weed may thus give strength if we use the lesson rightly, and look up to Him who has pointed us to that love which has so clothed the grass of the field and cared for the preservation of even the lowliest of the herbs and weeds. Will He not also care for the creature made in His own image? Such are the teachings which Christ gave when on earth. Such teachings are still taught by the owers of the field. Excerpt from Recollections of a Long Life The very favourable reception accorded by the public to the first instalment of Lord Broughton's Recollections, which appeared in the summer of 1909, and especially the advice I received, of indisputable value, and on which I place implicit reliance, have induced me to continue the publication of these Diaries and Memoirs down to the year 1834.
