The Wisdom to Know the Difference by Eileen Flanagan Pdf

This wise book guides readers in discovering what they can—and should—change in their lives, accepting what they cannot, and discovering “the wisdom to know the difference.” Thousands of people have been moved by the famous last lines of the Serenity Prayer: God, give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, courage to change the things that should be changed, and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other. But how exactly can we know the difference? How can we acknowledge our true limits without negating the possibility for dramatic change? In this inspiring book, Eileen Flanagan draws on her own Quaker faith as well as a range of other religious and spiritual traditions to show readers how they can learn to listen to their own inner voice in determining when a change is needed in their lives or when instead acceptance is the answer. These lessons come to life through the inspiring stories of various individuals, including: · the mother of a fallen soldier in Iraq who talks about the power of forgiveness and her work to end the war; · A Katrina survivor who describes how she learned inner peace the hard way; · a family therapist who shares what he learned about accepting the things he cannot change from the car accident that left him paralyzed. This illuminating book leads readers to discover the serenity that comes when one has gained “the wisdom to know the difference.”

The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius by Marcus Aurelius (Emperor of Rome),Russell McNeil Pdf

The timeless wisdom of an ancient Stoic can become a companion for your own spiritual journey. Stoicism is often portrayed as a cheerless, stiff-upper-lip philosophy of suffering and doom. Yet as experienced through the thoughtful and penetrating writings of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (121 180 CE), the Stoic approach to life is surprisingly rich, nuanced, clear-eyed and friendly. With facing-page commentary that explains the texts for you, Russell McNeil, PhD, guides you through key passages from Aurelius s "Meditations," comprised of the emperor s collected personal journal entries, to uncover the startlingly modern relevance his words have today. From devotion to family and duty to country, to a near-prophetic view of the natural world that aligns with modern physics, Aurelius s words speak as potently today as they did two millennia ago. Now you can discover the tenderness, intelligence and honesty of Aurelius s writings with no previous background in philosophy or the classics. This SkyLight Illuminations edition offers insightful and engaging commentary that explains the historical background of Stoicism, as well as the ways this ancient philosophical system can offer psychological and spiritual insight into your contemporary life. You will be encouraged to explore and challenge Aurelius s ideas of what makes a fulfilling life and in so doing you may discover new ways of perceiving happiness.

Areté by Brian Johnson Pdf

AN INSTANT PUBLISHERS WEEKLY BESTSELLER “This book will change your life. And, if enough of us commit, it will change the world.” — Phil Stutz, MD, bestselling author of The Tools, featured in the Netflix documentary, Stutz In Areté, Brian Johnson integrates ancient wisdom, modern science, and practical tools to, as per the sub-title of the book, help you activate your Heroic potential and fulfill your destiny. If you asked the ancient stoic philosophers how to live a good life, they’d answer you in a single word: Areté. We translate Areté as “virtue” or “excellence” but the word has a deeper meaning—something closer to being your best self moment to moment to moment. Phil Stutz, MD, the author of The Tools, who was featured in the Netflix documentary called Stutz, wrote the foreword to the book. He says: “What Brian has developed is much more than a bunch of coping mechanisms for the over-stressed modern person; although that would be an improvement for most of us. He’s developed a training program for the soul. Commit to this training and you will gain the ability to transmute your biggest problems, your darkest days, into unstoppable courage, endless enthusiasm, and an unshakable faith in the future. This book will change your life. And, if enough of us commit, it will change the world.”

Your Emotional Boat by Linda Branham M.Ed. Pdf

YOUR EMOTIONAL BOAT Lets pretend for a moment that you are a boat. So... what kind of boat would you be? Which boat would personify all of your characteristics? Your Emotional Boat utilizes the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator and pairs each Myers-Briggs Personality type with a particular “boat” style. All of us travel through life, but some are more prepared than others. This book prepares the reader to approach life as if they are beginning a journey. The author uses the analogy of comparing “people” to “boats” to further enhance the development of the idea of preparing for a journey. How a person prepares for the journey through life depends upon the type of “boat” that they are. Your Emotional Boat will lead the readers through several techniques to help them learn more about themselves and what they want to create in their lives. Once the reader understands their own personal style, and has determined what they want to create in their lives, they will be guided in the process of making a “map” for their own personal journey. The latter half of the book encourages readers to look more closely at their own spiritual beliefs and to discover how these beliefs affect their lives.

Drain Songs by Grant Maierhofer Pdf

A collection of related stories that deal with the anxiety, pain, and ennui of addiction and withdrawal Drain Songs gathers five stories and a novella focused on the many trials of modern life—addiction and depression, mania and disorder, attempts and failure at keeping the worst at bay. Grant Maierhofer’s stories focus on characters in varying states of disarray and stuckness, continuing his literary project of analyzing lives on the fringes of sanity and society. The novella “Drain Songs” is a harrowing narrative focused squarely on addiction and recovery, twelve-step programs, and codependency. In all of these tales, Maierhofer takes a bee’s eye view of protagonists from all walks of life, from the working class to the academy, from janitors to professors, embodying the commonalities of men and women struggling with the very fundamental elements of survival, perspective, and identity—attempts formal and informal to contend with the trials that forever engage and perplex humanity. His evocative prose conveys both despair and resignation as well as stultifying, brain-deadening routine and repetition. Still, these stories transcend angst and tilt toward agony and ecstasy and the hope of redemption.

God Doesn't; We Do by James A. Lindsay Pdf

Does God exist? Does He do anything in this world? Famous authors like Richard Dawkins suggest strongly that it is very unlikely, but how unlikely is it? God Doesn't; We Do brings James A. Lindsay's mathematical expertise to the question and is able to put the matter under a microscope only available through an understanding of abstract mathematics, which he makes accessible to any reader. Because of that, this book will change the conversation about the existence of God. The central theme of this book, though, points out that even if there were a God, we have no reason to believe He does anything at all in this world. Thus the responsibility is on us, as it always has been, to make our world what it will be. From the back cover: Our world is one that is full of difficult challenges, and many people still turn to God for solutions or credit Him with ones that they find. The time for that kind of superstition is long passed. God Doesn't; We Do seeks to address the topic on philosophical grounds, making appeals to a scientific mindset and evidence-based decision making in fields where religion has dominated for centuries, including morality, politics, and even spirituality. The title really says it all-God Doesn't; We Do: Only Humans Can Solve Human Challenges.

Natural Process of Quitting Forever by William Weber, M.A. Pdf

The Natural Process of Quitting Forever was written over a period of years. It started when I was seeing people who wanted to avoid 12 Step attendances while still wanting to end alcohol and drug problems. The book we were using generated questions and was not specific about quitting forever. I was tape recording and video taping the sessions for my review. I noticed I was answering the same questions over again with different people. I wrote down what I was telling them and started using the essays when I talked with new people. I always encouraged people to criticize what was written for clarity and content. At a point in time, I had enough written where I comb bound the papers with a table of contents and started selling my book. I kept editing and revising and adding to the book until it reached the point of what you are reading today. Author House afforded me the opportunity to publish professionally what I had been publishing and selling using my desktop publishing program with comb binding. It was written talking to people about quitting forever all alcohol and drug use while they read the book for that purpose. People are quitting forever by reading the book The Natural Process of Quitting Forever. It was not something I sat down and wrote but was written because people quitting forever told me it was helpful information leading them along their path to recovery. Check out my web site: quittingforever.org where I explain core concepts using cartoon like graphic illustration with verbal and written explanation. The web site also has some short video explanations by me.
